The 'Bedroom tax', Universal Credit, and various other welfare and public service cuts to be implemented in the coming weeks and months.

Tens of thousands of people will be utterly f**ked by this government. What do you think is going to happen?

www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2013/mar/28/benefit-cuts-monday-defines-government

The last time the Conservatives had a majority was 20(?) years go. Who wants to bet they'll never have one again?

Here is the original TeleGraph article for anyone interested. www.telegraph.co.uk/news/politics/conservative/9962079/Iain-Duncan-Smith-weve-given-up-trying-to-cut-benefits.html

UnChartered · 30/03/2013 19:53

oh yes, we've been on the itv regional news tonight! it's on itv catchup, going to find it on TV in a bit

Leithlurker · 30/03/2013 19:55

Corby you say, goes on list of possible places to move to.

Darkesteyes · 31/03/2013 00:55

Interestingly she used to date Philip Davies.... the man who said the disabled should work for less than minimum wage.

Darkesteyes · 31/03/2013 02:02

From the Universal Credit thread on AIBU.

MrsVamosSat 30-Mar-13 21:40:03

Have you heard the latest one about Hammersmith and Fulham council giving more consideration to prospective tenants who have volunteered for at least 6 months before considering offering them housing ?

Oh, and the one about if you then stop volunteering you could then be in breach of your tenancy agreement and could be evicted ?

Have just read about this on another forum, surely they won't get away with this ?

I agree, minouminou. It seems they are intent on wreaking as much havoc and causing as much damage as possible, remember, they are all in it together.

So they are using tenants as workfare fodder to keep their homes now as well as their meagre benefits.

I can't see how any council would be able to get away with it, Darkest ?

Leithlurker · 31/03/2013 11:49

Actually it could backfire on them Dark, seeing as workfare is not officially work, that could count as voluntary work. Plus single parents, people with impairments, and mental health problems have the time and the ability to undertake voluntary work, where as all these hard working families that need housing are .... well too busy working to do much voluntary work. So all those that the councils thought they would be getting rid off, are in fact more likely to be higher up the list. Tis all bonkers.

CamillaMacaulay1 · 31/03/2013 15:10

Wasn't Hammersmith & Fulham council the first place that David Cameron trialed his crappy ideas before the 2010 election- this included selling off homeless shelters, the result of which was a pregnant woman sleeping on an open expanse of grass and many people with nowhere to go....

motherhen1949 · 31/03/2013 19:39

There will not be riots, people on welfare complaing about not getting what there " entitled to" simply make the majorty feel that the actions taken feel more justified

Its almost a self fulling that most people feel weather you may like it or not that they are spolit and overindulged then they go out and roit and demand there benfits back

Even if there were roits it really wouldnt go down well with the public

Any attempt to riot will look like these people dont have the motivation to get a job but they have the moatervation to roit jo public wont be

On middle class mumsnet you will get shouted down for benefit bashing but else were allowing people to keep money many dont belive they dont deserve is NOT popular thats why labour have had to conceed that they would 2 have reduced the welafre bill also they are much more auite than one would expect a socilist party to be on this issue the tory can are doing this because the majorty of public are with them there are no votes in allowing people to keep welfaremany dont think the deserve

This is not my view but just putting another slant on things i am afrid however uch anyone may hate these changes people are behind them

expatinscotland · 31/03/2013 19:48

Tomorrow's the day!

JuliaScurr · 31/03/2013 19:48

leftunity.org/

sooner or later one of these things will succeed
if we keep the control freaks under control

Leithlurker · 31/03/2013 20:13

Motherhen: I think you make a couple of valid points, ones which all the activists and by that I mean community activists not politicle ones would also echo. In particular not too many people want to riot, or in fact want to be disobedient civilly or otherwise. I can certainly say that no stockpiling of Molotov cocktails, or battle planning is going on in my neighbourhood. I would suggest though that the more people feel ground down, and as if they do not matter then the easier it is for things to escalate.

Where I depart from you is that the majority are behind the changes. I think this is true only to the extent that the tory libdem government has done a good job of focusing the discussion on the scroungers. Tomorrow when many people wake up and start to be dint of being reciept of housing benefit find that they too are subject to the bedroom tax despite having jobs they will learn that they were also the ones being spoken about.

Likewise for the withdrawel of tax and child benefit, those most effected will be those who were just making ends meet. Every week that goes by, every month's salery when the get closer and closer to being unable to afford the mortgage, or to run the car, or to go out for treats, they can will be told that 9Were all in this together"

Universal credit has a special circle of hell reserved for self employed people, many of whom will never be able to either earn enough to satisfy the critea so face sanctions. Or if they earn too much they will get no benefit and be in effect worse of than those not in work at all. I doubt very much that those running their own buissness will appreciate being classed as a scrounger and not a striver. These many thousands of people will learn that talk of saving money from the welfare bill is not about the family down the road who have never worked a day in their lives but get everything. It is about them, and then they will realise what is going on and that they will need to act.

motherhen1949 · 31/03/2013 20:32

Also i dont think its helpul when the left talk about tory scum

It makes you look like the radical and out of control one the extremist personally one of tphe things that put me off the aynmous was the retarick very extream and hateful.

Fankley if the left dont get themslefs together and become a bit more moderate they will scare off people who may have been sympathetic to there cause

Also the issue of any one corncerned about welfare shouted down and branded a benfit basher or a tory scum bag shutting down the argument didn't work in relation To immgration thise concered branded rascist thats the lefts real issue

lottieandmia · 31/03/2013 20:44

motherhen - will the coalition cuts affect you? Because if not then it's easy for you to say calling the tories scum isn't helpful! The tories have (successfully it seems) managed to convince everyone that poor people are scroungers and are the reason for all the problems we have in the UK. This has always been their brand of politics - nothing to do with the deficit. If you look at Couthy's posts on another thread you will see that real people will not be able to feed and clothe their children because of these cuts. Nobody on benefits has ever been living it up. The tories just hate the poor and they hate single parents so they always try to shit on them.

What do you mean 'no motivation to get a job'? There aren't any jobs to get! Their policies affect many vulnerable people some of whom are disabled and realistically have no chance of getting a job even if they tried.

New labour was always quite moderate imo.

MiniTheMinx · 31/03/2013 20:56

I disagree, the polite left are now liberals and they are very polite when they are shafting you. Labour is no longer left, they need to be nudged in

Darkesteyes · 31/03/2013 20:57

Even if there were roits it really wouldnt go down well with the public

Yes mother hen it didnt go down well when it was the poll tax either.....oh wait [buhmm]

lottieandmia · 31/03/2013 21:10

They won't reverse Universal Credit, when you consider how much money it costs to implement a new system like that.

I think the question is what will the tories do next if they get a majority in 2015? I've heard rumours that they will start on pensioners next.

MiniTheMinx · 31/03/2013 21:13

Well then maybe we need to be finding ways of wrestling those copies of the Daily fail off the oldies and getting their attention Grin

We could have them all out throwing their walking sticks at Scameron.

Redbindy · 31/03/2013 21:22

Us oldies don't all read the DM, I'm quite happy with the Telegraph. I'm not sure about roits, riots on the other hand make good spectator sport.

lottieandmia · 31/03/2013 21:47

Nobody needs to read the Mail anymore to be brainwashed by tory propaganda.

LineRunner · 31/03/2013 22:02

News headlines - 'churches speak out against welfare changes'.

motherhen1949 · 31/03/2013 22:18

lottieandmia i already said that when people watched the last roits most people thought its was simply spolit brats being greedy

What i was trying to say is that people on welfare rioting will not really envoke sympathy in many and it will look like moaning about welafres many dont think people deserve.

Weather you agree or not giving people more walfare dosenot play out well and the perseption rightly or worngly is that people have had it to good for to long

I personally have not come on here to share my personal circumstance on a open forum i just putting a view across that on middle class mumsnet the left may have it but on welfare and immragtion the right have it in the county as a whole thats why i pointed out the left eg Labour and been leaning ever more to right because they know the public Wants a reduction or a least a reduction in welfare what ever is said on here.

darkesteyes if you think people on welfare rioting would play well in the press then fair dues its not my View the last few protests have quickly turned violent often hijacked and the people that were interviewed looked like moaning minies quite spoilt

motherhen1949 · 31/03/2013 22:22

And i think also the left need to drop this tory toffs thing as majoty of labour MPs are now from the same types of background and send there children to very nice private schools

MiniTheMinx · 31/03/2013 23:05

The corporates and the wealthy want to break up the welfare state. They set up think tanks soon after Roosevelt's new deal, so circa 1930s because they had been made to contribute too much in tax and invest in creating work. They own the media, TV and most of the university tenures in places like the U.S are sponsored by private business. Of course the people want right wing politics........they have been brain washed. Doesn't mean the left should start adopting right wing policies. It means we have to fight harder.

I agree that labour should turf out their toffs Grin

motherhen1949 · 31/03/2013 23:31

You wouldnt have many labour MPS left would you if they did that

And i am not suggesting that the left should turn right but if the lefts only arguments are you have all been brainwashed by the DM,tory sucm and tory toffs it makes the left seem fringe and a little bit out there

Bringing along you have all been brainwashed to a serious debate usually turns people off and makes them want to pass you your foil hat back

ttosca · 01/04/2013 00:21

For chrissake.

The Tories are privitising the NHS and dismantling the welfare state. They are wrecking lives and bringing misery to thousands of families across the UK.

I make absolutely no apologies for calling them UTTER CONTEMPTIBLE SCUM.

It's insane that a politician can destroy people's lives and kill people and the only thing that some people can bring themselves to do is to complain about being 'rude' or insulting them.

Get some perspective, for God's sake.
