Added council tax for improving your home!?

My colleague just showed me his newspaper (daily mail) and there was an article in there basically saying that if e.g. you invest a lot of efford in your garden to make it look really nice this enhances the value of your property without the purpose of selling and hence you should be paying higher council tax for the 'better view'... ffs!? They also mentioned double glazing and conservatories... what's next? Tax on the air we breath???

I saw something about htis on T.V. a while ago where they took around someones home explaining what you could and couldn't do, I can't remember much of it though as I just sat thinking "that's stupid"

I don't understand it unless they are saying that a house will be reassesed for council tax banding whenever it is sold (and so valued) and therefore people who stay in the same house are getting an unfair advantage IYSWIM.

Make it interesting working out whether or not to get a new conservatory, not only can we afford it but also, will it take us into another coundil tax band!

Now, doesn't that also increase the value of your neigbors house since they too can view your pretty garden.

Tax in this country is out of control. The longer it takes labour to realise that the sooner the torries will return to power.

Yeah I don't see the logic behind... I'm spending lots of time, effort and MY already taxed money to make my house look pretty and then I get taxed on it again... oh yes that makes so much sense.

We added a conservatory about 4 years ago (with planning permission). Lo & behold about 4 months later we got a letter from the council advising us that our house may be in the wrong band. Someone with a clipboard came round and made notes; I asked if this was because of our addition, she said 'not at all we think we got it wrong in 1992'. A while later we got a revised statement advising us we had gone up TWO bands. We tried appealing but essetially there seemed to be nothing we could do about it; largely because all the houses where we live are totally different, and we had nothing to compare it to.
