Before/After School Clubs

Was reading something int he telegraph the other day which said that some schools were tobe forced to provide after and before school care for kids and they were kicking up because they couldn;t afford to - right ok with me but they were planning on raising the money by making well off families pay, middle earners pay but get more tax credits and people on income support get it for free.

What is this country coming too - first off all I am very lucky and don't have to work (couldn;t afford the childcare either!!!) but feel a bit peed off that people who don't go to work are going to get free childcare at the expense of me and my family.

Why on earth if you didn't work would you want to put your kid into pre or after school care???

I am on income support and doing a degree, so would benefit from this. As it is i have never had a full day at college and leave after the morning session. I am sure my results wont be as high as the could be because i miss fundamental lectures.

The way i justify scrounging off the tax payer is the fact that the harder i work the higher rate of pay i will recieve and the higher tax i will put back into the system. I would be over the moon if this was to help someone in my position.

Allsorts of scenarios come into mind of why someone on income support would benefit from this.
Especially for single mothers. If you have a medical appointment with one child and cant get back in time for pick up etc.

Absolutely agree with FF. I am happy to pay for my after-school care. To me it's an alternative to CM and they are not for free.....And I am very happy to pay for someone in FF's situation so they can go out to work and be self-sufficient. I see it as a public good and fine to be means-tested.

Right so I can't afford to go to work as would have to pay for my kids to go into afterschool club but people who aren't even paying into the pot would get it for free - and I am not talking about students and the odd doctors appointment.

Perhaps if you cant afford to work you could also benefit from dipping into the pot. Child tax credits pay up to 70 percent of childcare fees to get sahms who want to, back into the work place.

why on earth do you resent poorer people benefitting from something that may be worthwhile for them?

I do get annoyed when people think i dont pay tax as i dont work
