Don't worry us scottish people will die first...are't youse always saying that's a good thing? Wink

Carmenere · 06/04/2006 08:41

That's the last swan I'll be eating for a while.

saltire · 06/04/2006 10:34

Wallace, don't you worry, it will be those of us who live in Fife that'll be first to get it Grin

Callisto · 06/04/2006 10:41

According to the bird flu expert on R4, as long as we don't drink swans blood we should be ok.

I recently reported two duck corpses in a pond down here on the east coast in Suffolk.
The two dead ducks have been taken away but there has been no warning put up whilst the recovered ducks are being tested.
Actually one duck has been taken away for certain, but the last I heard the guy who was tasked with removing the animals couldn’t locate the one in the water; it may have sunk. Defra can’t confirm the number of animals collected.
I spoke to the people at DEFRA and they said that if the animal(s) have been taken away there will be no risk.
I asked about the other ducks and geese which are in the pond. They haven’t been tested or taken away; do we continue to let children feed those ducks right upto the point at which further ducks drop dead ?
DEFRA’s answer was, this is “not in our guidelines..” and that I should contact the people who took the ducks away for clarification on the continuing dangers.
So I asked for the phone number of the people who took away the dead duck(s) and the person from DEFRA I was speaking to refused to give it to me as, “they are being inundated with calls…”
So, I can’t call the people who actually have the dead ducks to get a recommendation and DEFRA can’t think far enough ahead to consider the possibility that if two ducks died in a pound there remains the possibility that others might be ill.
Of course in two days time when they have the results back we’ll know if it was bird flu or a duck group suicide pact but in the meantime there will be no warnings, presumably to prevent panic.
Nice of DEFRA to consider ways of preventing panic as opposed to preventing the kids who feed the ducks daily being put at unnecessary risk.

See it is H5N1 :( Not good news then....
Lets hope it is mroe efficiently dealt with than the BSE and foot and mouth outbreaks...

does ANYONE know if the trains have been re-routed away from fife or not

TIA

Wallace · 06/04/2006 20:07

I think fifers probably do suck swans' blood... Wink

saltire · 06/04/2006 20:49

Ah Wallace, most of them do suck blood, but i'm not a Fifer, i'm a Borderer, I just live here, and not through choice

expatinscotland · 06/04/2006 20:52

Aye, ken wot those Fifers are like . . .

A pal of mine who stays in Cellardyke says it's like a bloody parade over there now.

DH was watching the news, 'Oi! There's the cottage we used to stay in for holidays! There's the hairdresser that used to be a bakery! There's 'The Haven'!'

saltire · 07/04/2006 08:05
