New DG of the BBC is yet another man. How depressing.

I had read a list of contenders and several of the front runners were women, and I thought, hooray, it's about time the beeb was run by a woman. But now it's yet another man. And not only that, but when I look on the BBC news website the article about the reaction from 'media commentators' gives quotes from NINE sources - guess how many of these were women? ONE. Even more bloody depressing. I mean, I could understand it if the job of top particle physicist was taken by a man, but this is MEDIA ffs, women are strong in this field. Why aren't 50% of the most senior roles at the national broadcasting institution, which is publicly funded, held by women? There's no bloody excuse. This is not 1972. Grrr.

It's enough to turn me into a feminist. Whoops, too late, I already am one.

I wouldn't understand if it was the job of a top particle physicist... plenty of women scientists out there...

anyway, I'm not surprised in the slightest. They should have chosen Caroline Thompson last time but they pissed her off so much she left and George Entwhistle got it instead. Now Helen Boaden is too tainted with the fuck ups that have gone before. It really really grates for me too that women are so poorly represented at the upper levels of an industry they dominate in places (just look at male:female ratios in the production staff on programmes like Daybreak, BBC Breakfast and This Morning - packed with women) It's like women are only allowed to fluffy stuff.

I don't think the BBC are too bad for women in senior positions.

Not that the new DG is a part of the failed political class that has run the BBC in to the ground, not that he's a lifetime quangocrat who's never had a real job in his life, not that he'll perpetuate the culture of low standards and serial leftism that has destroyed the BBC's current affairs - but that he's got a cock.

I suppose a woman who had a PPE from Oxford and had worked in quangos all her life would be ideal, would she, OP? Because what counts is ovaries rather than quality.

Maybe there should be two BBCs, one for men and one for women.

I think the current one is more geared towards women tbh, regardless who is in charge. Other than Top Gear and Match of the Day, are there any programmes watched by more men than women?

D you think a woman should have been given the position even if a man was the best person for the job? Just because she has a vagina and he doesn't?

"the best person for the job" is always a matter of opinion. High appointments are often a case of wheels within wheels. Who you know. David Dimbleby once applied for top job and didnt get it. Paxo seemed interested at one time.

There appears to be a" glass gender ceiling" for some top jobs. Though one or 2 female names were mentioned before latest appointment
