Sorry. I mean that I hope no-one will see Clive Stafford-Smith as a bad guy in all this. He does amazing work, on a pittance. He tries, for example, to save wrongfully convicted poor, young, black prisoners in the USA from the gas chamber.

I have no real opinion in him one way or the other but in tweeting publicly regarding the recipient of his libel damages, it raises the profile of the organisation which has to be a good thing. No?

And if he hadn't made it public, then I'm sure a lot of his detractors would have been very quick to jump to the conclusion that he'd kept the money and hadn't followed through on his promise to give it to charity. So he can't win, really, can he?

Why shouldn't he say that he's given the money away? Otherwise people would think he pocketed it.

The Mirror got rightly caned for lazily calling him a racist. He wasn't and was entitled to sue. It's a terrible thing to say about someone and the Mirror was lazy and stupid to say it and try to defend it.

They are just as offensive and ignorant as him as they presumably don't think the 'jokes' he makes about about disabled people and women matter and that racism, even when it doesn't exist, is the only sin.

Give credit where it's due. He's gone up in my estimation for this. Reprieve is a fantastic organisation, doing important work, and anything that raises its profile has to be a good thing.
