Two years after waiting for five months in jail. I saw the demonstration today outside Russian embassy with loads of people wearing bright clothes and balaclavas.

backwardpossom · 17/08/2012 16:35

Complete disgrace. And it's all kicking off now, apparently about 80 people have been arrested by riot police. Grauniad live blog

icepole · 17/08/2012 23:04

Awful Sad

BelfastBloke · 17/08/2012 23:10

From the Grauniad: "And here is the judge's argument on feminism creating religious hatred which I said I would return back to. It is a very interesting (to say the least) mix of liberalism and conservatism..."

The court does find a religious hatred motive in the actions of the defendants by way of them being feminists who consider men and women to be equal.

Now gender equally is asserted, maintained by the Russian constitution where all people are proclaimed equal irrespective of their gender, race, nationality political affiliation and so on.

Any form of limiting rights of citizens based on their gender and so on are banned by the Russian constitution. Men and women have equal opportunities in Russia.

People who consider themselves feminists presently struggle for actual equality [for women]. These activities are not considered criminal in accordance with the Russian law.

At the same time, Orthodox Christianity, and Catholic Christianity and other denominations do not agree with feminism and their own values are not inline with feminists.

In a modern society relations between various nationalities and between religious denominations must be based on mutual respect and equality and idea that one political movement can be superior to another gives root to perspective hatred between various opinions.

Kladdkaka · 18/08/2012 14:03

I think they got what they deserved. You have to remember that Russia has a history of females in balaclavas storming public buildings, taking people hostage and ultimately murdering them. Remember when they took the school hostage and 365 people died (783 injured)? Or the theatre where 170 died (700 injured)? Or the hospital where 140 died (415 injured)?

What would people want the consequences to be if a group of artists in the UK decided to stage a protest against the government by dressing up as suicide bombers and taking over an underground train?

alexpolismum · 18/08/2012 15:43

I don't really know what to make of this case.

It is perfectly possible to be a feminist and believe in equality and consequently AVOID misogynist religious institutions. Women who wish to frequent such establishments are free to do so and those who wish to set up their own less misogynist institutions are equally free. I fail to see why they felt the need to protest inside the church building.

On the other hand, as an institution that preaches love and forgiveness (turn the other cheek, etc) I also can't see why the church would wish to prosecute them.

Kladdkaka · 18/08/2012 15:52

Possibly because forgiveness is the second step. The first step is repentance. They aren't repentant therefore cannot be forgiven.

fair enough SGM. The coverage over here hasn't been brilliant, to be honest, and I've only just started looking at articles in the English language media. I still think this would be a great PR opportunity for the church to come out in force calling for the case to be dismissed!

strangerintheday · 18/08/2012 16:05

kladdaka please research before you start typing here

Kladdkaka · 18/08/2012 16:06

I disagree and believe it's sensible and inoffensive. When a country has a history of people in covering their faces and taking over public places to commit atrocities, you don't go around covering your face and taking over public places without expecting repercussions.

I wasn't, SGM, but I will now. Thanks. I'd only looked at Greek articles up till now (been busy researching other things recently Smile)

The only "crime" these women committed was a crime of uttering ?Mother of God, Cast Putin Out?. Were they to sing ?Mother of God, Save Putin? there would be NO action against them.

Nothing to do with balaklavas. In addition I suspect this alfa-male Putin is irritated by women making the stand.

alexpolismum · 18/08/2012 16:24

Blush A rather expensive hobby, I'm afraid! It involves having a very large collection of books on linguistics and etymology! You can find some things online, of course, but some things still require good old fashioned books!

Apparently they were also being highly offensive because they wore bright clothing in a church Hmm

OP posts:
alexpolismum · 18/08/2012 16:37

what do people normally wear in Russian churches? Confused

winnybella · 18/08/2012 16:53

They also sang 'Lord is shit'.

While I think their behaviour was highly inappropriate, 2 years is totally disproportionate imo.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 18/08/2012 16:54

But, um, it's quite normal to cover your head in an orthodox church!

My mother-in-law would wear bright colours and something over her head when she goes to Divine Liturgy.

I don't see how this makes them look like terrorists and I do think the comparison is odd.

cocolepew · 18/08/2012 17:16

I can see what they did was offensive to church goers, but the sentence was ridiculous.

OP posts:
LRDtheFeministDragon · 18/08/2012 17:22

Yeah, sorry, I'm not denying it was offensive, I just think it is rather stretching it to compare them to balaclava-wearing terrorists.
