Did Federer throw the match?

Well, did he?

There is another possible explanation.

Federer was nobbled. Someone put something in his lemon barley water. Wink

I don't think Murray walked it- there were a lot of hard fought points and Federer very nearly broke back early in the second - could have changed the momentum significantly if he had.

I saw Federer take out some unknown at Wimbledon in just over an hour.
Straight sets and the scoreline of the loser was actually better than Fed's in the final - but Federer walked that match for sure.

Northernlurker · 08/08/2012 00:19

Of course he didn't throw it. He's one of the best the game has ever seen and he loves Wimbledon. He just got beat by a fresher younger man who had the whole crowd roaring him on and who played the match of his life.

Nancy66 · 08/08/2012 08:41

Yet, the 'younger, fresher' Murray was totally outclassed by the same player just 4 weeks previously on the same court - with justs as much (if not more) crowd support.

TheDoctrineOfEnnis · 08/08/2012 10:08

Ok, nancy, believe what you like.

EmilieFloge · 08/08/2012 10:13

Every time I look at those A shaped lights on the stadium, I think of the stuff I saw by accident on You Tube claiming that it's all part of the New World Order.

And then I feel relatively sane and normal, too.

EmilieFloge · 08/08/2012 10:15

I did wonder why Andy won it though. He played really well. But I can't imagine he would have taken any drugs or anything.

I don't think Federer played badly. Just that Andy seemed to be on top form at that particular match, for whatever reason. Which is allowed.

Northernlurker · 08/08/2012 10:21

He wasn't totally outclassed. He lost after the roof was closed and he certainly didn't have universal support. There was plenty of support for Roger too, he's a popular champion with tennis watchers. As has been pointed out earlier in the thread Murray has beaten Federer before. He's beaten Nadal and Djokovic too. He's one of the best players in the world.

CotedePentathlon · 08/08/2012 10:30

Absolutely no way would Roger Federer throw a match. Absolutely no way would Andy Murray take drugs! Both are real sportsmen and play to the best of their ability at all times, and have no need of artificial stimulants. Andy was the best man on the day, and the conditions suited him. A month ago, Roger was the best man on the day and the conditions suited him.

A quick look around the internet finds this -

"To date, Andy Murray and Roger Federer have played against each other a total of 16 times. The score is 8 wins and 8 losses each. Murray has won 8 times on hard courts versus Federer?s 7 hard court wins. Federer?s 8th win against Murray was on a grass court. They have never met on clay courts."

As always, Roger was a true gentleman in defeat, and the same can be said of Andy after the Wimbledon final.

By the way, it is the norm for the losing player in a tennis match to leave the court quickly, allowing the winner his time in the spotlight. The only exception to this is usually a grand slam, when both players stay on court till the presentation.

He had an off day and murray had an onday. Fed has been beaten before. Even by Murray

NoComet · 08/08/2012 11:34

No!

Murray came off a short up lifting Semi and is younger.

Federer had played a very hard Semi and is older.

Federer has a great sense of history and is a nice chap. I think he might have let spoiling the crowds party enter his head. I think he may not have had the stomach for a real scrap, But No Way did he throw the match!

Murray was playing brilliantly, I don't much like him, my tennis mad DSIs cant stand him. But even she cheered for team GB. A

Murray has finally grown up. He just said this is mine from the first ball.

Nancy66 · 08/08/2012 14:50

Murray was also younger than Federer four weeks ago.

trixymalixy · 08/08/2012 19:24

4 weeks ago, Murray walked all over Federer in the first set, took him to a tie break in the 2nd set, also had several break points in the second set that he didn't manage to capitalise on, then the roof was closed and the direction of the match changed as sometimes happen after a break. It was very nearly Murray's match.

The match at the olympics started off in an almost identical manner, but this time Murray just managed to maintain the determination at the Olympics that he lost after the second set at Wimbledon and Federer just didn't get his mojo back in time.

MrK and I watched both Federer and Murray in their semis matches live last week and came away thinking that Murray would have the edge for the final. He was just playing much better tennis. Federer was making a lot of unforced errors and the length of the match with Del Potro must have taken a lot out of him.

Murray was on brilliant form against Djokovic, who's no slouch either.

I don't think Federer would ever throw any match. The Olympic title is the only one he's never won, why wouldn't he want to win and complete the set?

As for Illuminati Grin

CotedePentathlon · 09/08/2012 16:42

Was he Nancy? I didn't realise that. Hmm

MarysBeard · 12/08/2012 04:44

Nancy, Murray wasn't "totally outclassed" by Federer at Wimbledon. Murray won the first set, then in the second set there was a long Murray service game (as in Olympics final) but Federer triumphed - opposite happened in Olympics, & psychologically it turned the match around.
What was different in the Olympics was a) Murray always managed to keep the psychological upper hand b) the earlier rounds were only up to 3 sets long (as opposed to up to 5 in Wimbledon & Murray had had a fairly easy run through whereas Fed had a shocker in semi-final c) Murray had partisan crowd.

I do not think Fed threw the match but when he went a break down in 3rd set having lost the first two sets he must have thought the game was over - though he was still fighting.

I think also Murray was especially focused on finishing the match in 3 sets as he had a doubles final to play in after! Saw him have that focus at Wimbledon when finishing a game quickly so it didn't have to go on to the next day.

Pedallleur · 18/08/2012 21:14

Doubt a player like Federer would lose deliberately - he isn't that sort imo. But plenty of sportspeople have been involved with buying victories (cycling has a history of this), match fixing (rugby, cricket, football). As for drugs - tennis has avoided drug testing wherever it can as has football, Murray has been outspoken particularly saying it's intrusive and recently certain Dr's in Spain have been charged with supplying drugs and a blood doping programme which may have incl. Rafa Nadal. Supposedly tennis has tightened its testing policy but ......

Tennis pros do throw matches. You only have to read Agassi's autobiography for proof of that.

weblogs.sun-sentinel.com/sports/columnists/hyde/blog/2009/11/ricky_patriots_kicked_me_agass.html

"Losing on purpose isn't easy," he writes "You have to lose in such a way that the crowd can't tell, and in a way that you can't tell. Your mind is tanking, but your body is fighting on. ... You don't do those tiny things you need to do. You don't run the extra few feet, you don't lunge. You're slow to come out of stops. You hesitate to bend or dig."

However, I would like to think that it wasn't the case in this match as in career terms he would have won a career golden slam in winning this gold medal.
