Well, did he?

OP posts:

The badminton players were a bit different - they were in the opening rounds and had already qualified for the next stage I think. They weren't playing for gold or silver.

Pagwatch · 07/08/2012 08:20

The badminton players were not throwing a medal - they were trying to contrive an easier path to winning one.

Orenishii · 07/08/2012 08:35

Just pointing out it's not completely unknown for athletes at that level to throw matches, whatever the reasoning. The wink kind of implies a not-completely serious post Smile

CogitoErgOlympics · 07/08/2012 08:35

Rubbish. Highly competitive people like Federer want to win everything from a game of Scrabble upwards. If he wasn't bothered about getting an Olympic title he'd have taken a fortnight off.

Pagwatch · 07/08/2012 08:40

He hated every moment of that match. The crowd all but ignoring him was driving him batty. He would have killed to turn it around.

trixymalixy · 07/08/2012 08:44

FFS, more Murray bashing. The guy just cannot win can he.

Look at the way Federer stormed off at the end, he really was not happy. I very much doubt he would have given up the chance of a gold medal.

ken0eddie0kennedy · 07/08/2012 08:46

See, everyone's an expert Grin - None of us know do we, it's not rubbish, just an opinion really.

Pagwatch · 07/08/2012 08:49

I am not an expert about anything except possibly shopping Grin
But I am not sure what level of expertise you need to think that if two men are competing for a gold medal in their sport, they both want to win it. And ridiculous conspiracy theories are usually bollocks.

Thumbwitch · 07/08/2012 08:52

No I don't think he did. I don't think it was as important to him as the Grand Slam either, but I'm damn sure he wouldn't have deliberately thrown it.
He did say something about not being in the right place, emotionally, whatever that means.

CogitoErgOlympics · 07/08/2012 12:32

There was a thread somewhere recently berating the silver medal winning rowers for being disappointed with the outcome. Hmm Unless they are in the Eddie the Eagle league and happy just to be in the competition at all, every competitor wants to win.

Nancy66 · 07/08/2012 13:54

I think it's very obvious that Federer didn't put his all into it - i said that on a previous thread and the outrage was hilarious.

GeorgeEliot · 07/08/2012 18:09

Am sure he didn't throw the match deliberately.

However, psychologically it was probably really tough for him - the crowd were so supportive of Murray, and more vocal than they are at Wimbledon.

And of course there's no prize money at stake in Olympics...

LadyBeagleEyes · 07/08/2012 18:47

Of course he didn't throw the match.
He didn't play his best, that's for sure, and I'm disappointed in him as I usually like him, and the glitter of Grand Slams and the money were obviously more important.
Whatever, Team GB have 19 golds and I've lost count of the silver and bronzes.
Switzerland have ?.
I really don't know, but love Andy for increasing our medals and helping put us 3rd on the list.

aleene · 07/08/2012 18:50

21 golds now Smile

aleene · 07/08/2012 18:52

Actually I'm wrong - 22 golds can't keep up

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 07/08/2012 18:54

Agree with Tiddlypool, why would he bother to enter if he wasn't bothered.....

Murray is a very good player, and maybe Federer was not 100% well on the day. I doubt he threw the match.

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 07/08/2012 18:55

Maybe he had had a row witih that miserable wife of his.....

mamij · 07/08/2012 19:35

I doubt he would have thrown the match on purpose. A win is a win.

Although not as big as the Grand Slams/Wimbledon etc in the tennis world, winning an Olympic Gold for your country is pretty up there! Besides, Murray was performing rather well at Wimbledon until the roof came up!

NicholasTeakozy · 07/08/2012 20:10

Murray was on fire during that match. I think he'd have done the same to Nadal on that form. Or indeed any other player. He was just brilliant and deserved the win.

MrsVamosGOTEAMGB · 07/08/2012 20:14
Shock

Let's not get carried away, Nicholas. Smile

VicarGoingForGoldInKungFu · 07/08/2012 20:17

murray deserves credit where its due - he walked it. the conditions suited him on the day, bit of wind, sunny, no rain so no roof.....he played brilliant tennis.

federer lost - it happens sometimes you know!

i have absolutely no doubt in my mind that fed did not throw the match - why on earth would he - he looked utterly pissed off at the end.

Nancy66 · 07/08/2012 20:21

the fact that Murray walked it is what's making everyone query it.

Why doesn't he 'walk it' any other time?

suzikettles · 07/08/2012 20:26

Well, this informed person says that it's the Illuminati who paid Federer to throw the match.

Apparently they're responsible for the Olympic Gold stamps too.

So, if that's what you mean by googling "Federer throws match", then no, I don't think any sane people believe this.

forehead · 07/08/2012 20:33

Federed definitely did not throw the match. As others have said, he is a very competitive guy and would not risk losing the chance of an Olympic gold for his country. I just feel that Andy Murray was more relaxed than usual and was taking greater risks as he was not under the pressure he usually faces
when playing in grand slams. Simple as.

LadyBeagleEyes · 07/08/2012 22:22

I'm almost crying myself laughing about that Illuminati link suzi.
Anything about Illluminati does the same.
I love the fact that there are such total nutters out there, It makes me feel almost normal.
