Well, did he?

Olympia2012 · 06/08/2012 13:53

Hmm well I did wonder!

Peggotty · 06/08/2012 13:53

I doubt it. the oracle my dh said that he's never win olympic gold and he'll be too old at next olympics so this was his last chance. Why would he throw the match?

MrsVamosGOTEAMGB · 06/08/2012 13:55

Said this before on another thread.

Very insulting that people would think that an athlete would 'throw' a match/race/whatever at this level.

Makes you sound bitter that his opponent won. And very unsporting. Sad

Treblesallround · 06/08/2012 13:56

Why on earth would he?

GetOrfMoiRing · 06/08/2012 13:56

I can't imagine that an athlete of that calibre would ever deliberately lose a match.

OkOkOk · 06/08/2012 13:57

no! he's not great when it's windy. he had treouble playing somebody else in the wind. he beat murray at wimbledon on a totally still day. (this according to my tennis mad mum). I couldn't give a *&^%

Yama · 06/08/2012 13:59

Federer has been beaten by Murray before you know.

I do think that the 19-17 final set in the semi final took it out of him though (if not Del Potro).

peeriebear · 06/08/2012 14:00

I can't believe one of the most successful tennis players ever would deliberately play poorly when representing his country in an Olympics final. It would go against everything he worked for!
Murray did say that the crowd noise kept holding Federer up though; he likes to play fast but kept having to wait for quiet and it was jamming him up a bit.

CaroleService · 06/08/2012 14:02

Maybe he just had an off day. Or indigestion. Or a wild night.

CheddarsintheRunning · 06/08/2012 14:05

Murray has beaten Federer more times than he's lost to him.

I doubt Federer is allowing himself to be beaten every time! Hmm

suedpantsoffem · 06/08/2012 14:06

TBH I don't think he did either. But there's a lot of talk on the Internet speculating that he did. Google "did Federer throw the match".

Given the turning point in the Wimbledon final that happened when the roof was closed, no I don't think so. Murray had at least part of the upper hand while the roof was open. Also tbh I think now that he's older, Federer does better in longer matches, he takes a while to play in these days (am no sort of tennis expert though). The two-set open-air format was a killer for him.

MrsVamosGOTEAMGB · 06/08/2012 14:14

Google "did Federer throw the match" and see lots of self-important twats who know eff all about sport making ridiculous claims. Grin

ken0eddie0kennedy · 06/08/2012 14:15

Nah, it just wasn't a biggie to him, that's all. Nadal's not there, for example - It's all about the slams to lots of players, the Olympics isn't all that important.

TheDoctrineOfEnnis · 06/08/2012 14:15

No, not at all. Both were playing well but I have never seen Murray play better, Federer maybe not at his best but no-one can be every day. Also although Murray played two matches the day before, they were both quite short and doubles is presumably less physically demanding than singles anyway, given your partner covers about half the shots.

TheDoctrineOfEnnis · 06/08/2012 14:18

And yes, Murray has beaten Federer plenty in Masters which have the three set format. (yes I know the final was best of five!)

Indeed, but you could apply that to many things on the internet; Everyone's an expert!

MrsVamosGOTEAMGB · 06/08/2012 14:19

Well, yes, I'm one of them ! Grin

blibblibs · 06/08/2012 14:23

It's utter madness that anyone would think that Federer would throw a match!

bigkidsdidit · 06/08/2012 14:30

To be world number one you have to be insanely driven and competitive - not the sort to throw a Match!

Plus Murray is quite good you know :)

EauRouge · 06/08/2012 14:31

Yes, I'm also struggling to understand why anyone would think Federer would prefer a silver rather than a gold medal Hmm

TheCatInTheHairnet · 06/08/2012 15:21

Agree with Ken ^ that it just wasn't as important to him. In the same way that the average soccer player would prefer to win the world cup than an Olympic gold (I would presume), I think Federer has his eye more on the upcoming US Open.

LadyBeagleEyes · 06/08/2012 17:58

If it wasn't that important to him, I feel sorry for his supporters in Switzerland who were probably desperate to see a Gold medal for their country.
They're not going to get many are they?
Shame on him if that's true, he was playing for his country.

tiddlypool · 06/08/2012 20:01

If it wasn't that important to him, why would he bother turning up? Or getting to the finals?

Orenishii · 07/08/2012 08:14

I can't imagine that an athlete of that calibre would ever deliberately lose a match.

As oppose to those world class Badminton players...Wink
