mother in Bali jail on drugs charges sent to psychiatrist for missing her child

I am not condoning anything- the UK puts people on drugs charges in prison on remand- but surely it is normal to be upset at not seeing your child? And they should not be talking about any death sentence yet -she has not even been charged . Why not let us see her little girl or at least give her some hope instead of a blinking psychiatrist??

You break the law in a foreign country and you take the consequences.

I see you started the Singaporevthread too - you obviously have a thing about drug laws.
The moral of the story is - if you visit a country find out the laws and stick to them- or don't visit.

hattifattner · 04/06/2012 07:28

maybe she could use some of the money she has allegedly made from drug money to send the grieving mothers of her victims to see a psychiatrist. Or even the drug addicted victims themselves.

I have zero sympathy with alleged drug smugglers.

CoteDAzur · 04/06/2012 07:29

Maybe they thought psychiatrist could help with her depressive feelings (of suicide?). Maybe whoever has custody of her DD doesn't feel like flying her to the other side of the world so she can see her mummy in a prison? Hard to comment without a link to the story.

As exotic said, you break the law in a foreign country, you live with the consequences.

Sorry but she chose to break the law. She should have thought of her daughter first.

franke · 04/06/2012 07:38

Has she been tried and found guilty then?

Putthatbookdown · 04/06/2012 09:27

She is only on remand; she has not even been charged and so it is too early to even talk about any punishment. In fact if she had been accused of this in GB exactly the same would have happened to her. It is the media stirring all this up I think. It sells newspapers. No one actually knows yet if she is gulity .
She could be released The child is nearby so that is another newspaper eyecatcher.

No she hasn't been tried or found guilty. She says that she thought the package was a birthday present to her daughter, from the other woman who has admitted the charge. So the woman the OP refers to claims innocence.

On the other hand there would be no point in giving her false hope.

RichManPoorManBeggarmanThief · 06/06/2012 04:51

My understanding is that the woman in question (Rachel Dougall) is actually a Bali resident (living there with her partner and their daughter). Whole story is a bit odd tbh. Police searched her house after being tipped off by Lindsay Sandiford, the woman arrested at the airport with 5kg cocaine in her case.

The police found some cocaine in a cigarette packet in Rachel Dougall's house. She claims the police planted it and that Lindsay Sandiford set her up. Who knows? There are a lot of drugs in Bali, not least amongst the expat population, and possibly the birthday thing provided a good cover for a handover, but at the same time it could be a set up whereby the first woman just named a load of random foreigners (Sandiford and Dougall knew one another), hoping to mitigate her own sentence

Birdsgottafly · 06/06/2012 10:38

Other reports say that the cocaine found in Dougall's house was in a box rapped up to look like a Birthday present, which Sandiford had given to them.

So there are inconsistances in the reporting.

The woman being treated, Dougall is claiming innocence. Perhaps Sandiford thought that she could create enough confusion to cover up the truth.

Until Dougal's guilt has been proven, she should be given all the help that she needs.

Sandiford is the only one admiting guilt and that may be the case.

RichManPoorManBeggarmanThief · 06/06/2012 13:22

Yeah I read that too Birds but I think the gift wrapped package was given to her partner, not to her (the reporting is really confused, but that's quite normal as is probably being gleaned from a number of unofficial sources).
