Must admit to being amazed at the vast media coverage this sport is receiving in the Olympic broadcast.

Have you ever done curling? Do you know anyone who does it? Who are these athletes, and where/how do they get into this strange activity? Or is it fantastically popular, and I've just been oblivious?

I did curling at high school, but I am in Scotland where every ice rink has a curling team. I really enjoyed it, it is quite easy to get the basic techiques but very hard to master the game plans and skills needed to do well.

It's recieving a lot of coverage because we won Gold in the last Olympics - it got loads of coverage then and (apparently) uptake for the sport has increased a lot since then.

Its a bit like bowls I suppose, the object is to get your stones as close to the centre as possible, if yours is closest you get points for every ohter stone you have closer than any of theirs.

The brushers can spped up or slow dowm the stone. You can put a spin on your stone to get it to curl which can bring it in behind the guard stones. Guard stones are ones near the front to block the circle. You can hit the other stones to knock them out of the circle.

THanks QofQ - that will help me understand what is going on/meant to happen. It's been a mystery until now!

Just a couple of questions?

Why is denial of the Holocaust punishable by imprisonment?

Why did the same paper refuse to publish a cartoon of Jesus a couple of years back, citing displeasure by its readers?

peacedove · 21/02/2006 02:00

sorry, wrong thread

I love watching curling but they DON'T show it in Oz. We only get the sports in which there are Australians competing and they only seem to go for the nutty things like freestyle moguls and snowboarding (the latter being a classic when the Aussie girl announced that she didn't do her super duper snazzy jump thing because when it came to it just didn't feel like it so no medal this time...). V sad to see that the ladies have been knocked out of the curling; fingers crossed for the men. It gives me hope that I may yet win an olympic medal (not that I've ever done it but given you can still be in the team at 50+ then there's hope yet!)

it was part of our winter PE curriculum at secondary school. Bit of a laugh.

There's nothing odd about curling north of the border! It was played on frozen ponds etc. In my home town there is a pond known as "The Curlie Pond" even though nobody has curled on it for about 100 years!

expatinscotland · 21/02/2006 10:22

same here, early. i've seen more curling than anything else on this crap coverage of the olympics - can't wait to get Sky again one of these days.

to me it just looks like people shoving a rock w/brooms. beyond boring.
