Would nude male centrefolds sell magazines today?

Just been reading this BBC article about Burt Reynolds posing nude for Cosmopolitan 40 years ago. Would I be right in saying this would never happen today? An A list star (George Clooney, for instance) would never pose nude for a magazine, and even if they did, would women really be all that interested? It's strange because it was seen as being groundbreaking at the time but now things have changed.

Nope - has been tried a couple of times in past 15 years - magazines have never sold well and always folded within 6 issues

I can't remember which newspaper used to have 'Page 7 Fella' and a few men complained so they stopped it. Funny how protests over Page 3 have had no effect! Hmm

JosephineCD · 30/04/2012 20:18

I think it was the Sun that had page 7. I doubt it sold any more newspapers, which is why they dropped it. If they thought dropping page 3 would sell more papers, they would so in a heartbeat. But it wouldn't.

I just read that article!

Thought Burt looked fab Blush

There are a multitude of websites devoted to posting any and every picture they can find of nude male celebrities. I wouldn't buy a magazine just for a picture because if I was that keen on seeing it I'm sure it would be online in a day or so (much less embarrassing!).

iklboo · 30/04/2012 20:26

To be honest, a pic of some bloke's turkey giblets hanging out while I'm eating my breakfast wouldn't do it for me, famous or not.

SardineQueen · 30/04/2012 20:26

I think some people would be very interested.

Those calenders of oiled up male soap stars / fireman / boybands with their tops off seem to fly off the shelves.

FruitPastillesForever · 30/04/2012 20:27

I wouldn't buy it... Don't need to see their bits to appreciate their assets.

WMDinthekitchen · 30/04/2012 20:31

Agreed, iklboo. Like that line in The Bell Jar where the boyfriend strips off so she can see him naked and all she can think of are turkey gizzards!

doormat · 30/04/2012 20:32

i had that pic of burt reynolds about 30 yrs ago Grin

yes i would have a gorp Grin

TheSkiingGardener · 30/04/2012 20:34

Men's bits are fun to play with, but ugly to ogle. Shame really.

SardineQueen · 30/04/2012 20:45

Course generally people don't want to look at flaccid members
Erect penises are a different matter, prob a few people would be happy to look at those.
Can't imagine that happening though in the mainstream media!

EdithWeston · 30/04/2012 20:45

What was the name of the mazagine from the late 80s or early 1990s that featured male nudes?

I remember getting the first issue (for novelty value) but I don't think the mag lasted long.

SardineQueen · 30/04/2012 20:46

SGB was involved in that I think
Can't remember the name

DioneTheDiabolist · 30/04/2012 20:47

For Women?

EdithWeston · 30/04/2012 21:03

I think it was For Women that I was thinking of. Thanks!

WidowWadman · 30/04/2012 22:07

I thought Cosmo still does a centrefold section? It's been a couple of years since I last bought one, but am pretty sure there was.

Just googled - they still do

Xales · 30/04/2012 22:09

That picture of Burt Reynolds is very nice. Glad someone else said so before me Blush

Just had a nose on playgirl, every single male on the front is plucked, waxed, shaved and oiled from the looks of it.

No idea if they are all like that if you sign up. Someone feel free to tell me Grin A shame though just like how women seem to be expected to be the same by the majority now.

AKissIsNotAContract · 30/04/2012 23:19

I was just coming on to post what widow has already said. Cosmo haven't stopped doing nude centrefolds. They don't show erect cocks though

Nancy66 · 01/05/2012 08:06

The Sun did P.7 fellas for a very short while - done to try and boost female readership but it didn't so it stopped. I don't recall there being any male protests over it.

limitedperiodonly · 01/05/2012 15:01

I've just looked. Burt wore a wig even 40 years ago.

Islandlady · 07/05/2012 08:55

I am very very surprised that this picture has been posted on a public forum, not because he is bollicky buck nekid but horrors of horrors HE IS SMOKING A CHEROOT - would have thought the nanny state would have insisted the offending gasper was airbrushed out after all young children might see the it Shock

Xales · 07/05/2012 11:03

There seems to be several different versions of this picture floating on the internet.

In some there is no cheroot or ashtray, either they took quite a few shots almost identical or have done the airbrushing as you say Islandlady.
