Mumsnet, will you tell the woman that Ched Evans raped, that We Believe Her? And call upon the FA to kick sexism out of football?

Dear Mumsnet
As you are no doubt aware, there has been the most extraordinary hate campaign waged this week by some football fans, against a rape victim in the wake of the Ched Evans Guilty Verdict.

The jist of the hatespeak, has been that a drunk woman has no right to expect the basic human right of not having her body penetrated without her active participation in that sexual act, or even her passive consent. Presumably because men (or at least footballers and their friends) have the right to penetrate women who are incapable of consent. And that if a man rapes you, it is because you are a slut, a slag and all the other hate-speak words used to de-humanise women and make it easier for people not to empathise with us when we are abused.

This week has seen the really ugly spectacle, of a bunch of men asserting their right to rape women, handmaidens supporting that right and both of them sending out a clear warning to all other rape victims, to know what to expect if they dare to pursue justice if they are raped.

If there had been a similar outpouring of hatred against any other historically oppressed group, the rest of the media would have been tearing their hair out analysing why some men hated this group so much, where the hatred came from, why it existed, what could be done about it; but ironically apart from the Daily Fail, there has been very little comment in response to the Twitter hate-campaign. If Twitter had buzzed with indignation at the jailing of the man who posted hate-speak about Fabrice Muamba, I?ve no doubt that the FA would have tracked down the posters and banned them from football matches. Because they?re busy kicking racism out of football. Sexism, though, is fine. They can give a bloody award to a convicted rapist, while their supporters conduct what must be a terrifying hate campaign against his teenage victim? right now, football fans don?t look all that much better than the Taliban, do they?

Mumsnet, will you use the voice you have against this horrible hate campaign? Will you tell the woman that Ched Evans raped, that We Believe Her? Will you ask the FA to state publicly, that they too, believe her and that in future, they will work as hard to kick sexism out of football, as they do to kick racism out?

Thank You.

Someone's posted abuse in the comments under the latest link too, the one to the mugging myths blog post (which is excellent, btw!)

porcamiseria · 01/05/2012 14:19

I believe you and think you are immensely courageous to help prevent this happening to others by taking it to trial.

You are admirable. He is not.

speffles · 01/05/2012 14:22

I believe her and my football fan DH believes her too.

This is a great post. Mumsnet has a powerful voice, I really hope we can use it to give her some support.

Klinda · 01/05/2012 14:24

I believe her.

Barmcaker · 01/05/2012 14:25

I believe her.

wannaBe · 01/05/2012 14:25

I tweeted victoria derbyshire this morning to ask if she will run a slot on her show about this. If anyone else wants to follow suit she @vicderbyshire on twitter. She hasn't responded to me, but she has done in the past/retweeted tweets from me etc so she is somewhere to start.

Also maybe worth contacting [email protected] to see if they would run this as a phone-in?

Am writing a blog about this as we speak - not only about this particular issue but touching on the issue of presumed consent. But I am being careful about putting Clayton Macdonald's name in it, because, regardless of what we think about him (and believe me I could write an essay), he has actually been found not guilty in a court of law, so to paint him as a rapist on a public internet site may well open us up to libel etc which would take away from the real issue.

TheGreatScootini · 01/05/2012 14:28

I believe her

LumpyLatimer · 01/05/2012 14:29

Yes, can I please plead caution against insisting that Macdonald was guilty? If we say the court was wrong about him, we are also casting doubt upon the court's decision re. Evans. Best not to muddy the waters.

TandB · 01/05/2012 14:30

I believe her and given the response of my friends and family to a blog post I wrote about the conviction, I can say with some certainty that everyone I know believes her too.

TheGreatScootini · 01/05/2012 14:30

I am so disheartened too as I hear the Sheffield United fans are planning a one minute's applause in support of Ched Evans before their last game on Saturday. There are some truly misguided people out there.:(

everybodysang · 01/05/2012 14:32

A minute's applause? How utterly vile.

I believe her.

MainlyMaynie · 01/05/2012 14:32

I believe her.

MrsMcEnroe · 01/05/2012 14:33

I believe her. I believe in her right to lifelong anonymity.

wannaBe · 01/05/2012 14:33

Oh it was a Swindon match that Clayton Macdonald played in at the weekend. He was unanimously boohed by the nearly 13000 strong crowd. Just saying.

controlpantsandgladrags · 01/05/2012 14:34

I believe her.

I fail to understand how anyone could come out in support of a convicted rapist. Mind boggles.

LtEveDallas · 01/05/2012 14:34

I still believe her.

Have people seen this? - I've only just come across it after reading some Tweets commenting on it (I am a Twitter Dunce)

Reported in the news on 26 April (I found a link to a Sun website, but there are lots of other reports):

Hopeful MP Liam Elvish sparked a backlash online after appearing to trivialise the attack in a message to his 600 followers.

Sheffield United striker Evans, above, was last week jailed for five years for raping a 19-year-old woman in a hotel.

But Elvish, 24, wrote on his profile page: ?Is it just me or is 5 years is ridiculously excessive? [sic]

?The judge said the sentence took into account that there had been no force involved and the complainant received no injuries.

?Yet another shameful example of our disproportionate legal system.

"Most girls I speak to say they wouldn?t say no to Ched Evans, anyway..."

Museum worker Mr Elvish is due to stand as a Liberal Democrat in the Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council election next week

-------

Wouldn't say no? What a bloody idiot Angry. Lets hope he doesn't get in.

OvO · 01/05/2012 14:35

I believe her.

Frontpaw · 01/05/2012 14:35

Showing support to a rapist? That's classic. I do hope that each and every man clapping away (and I am assuming it will be mainly men doing this) will incur the wrath of their wives, sisters, girlfriends and mothers, and every decent person they know, should they be so bloody stupid to do this.

CamperFan · 01/05/2012 14:36

I believe her too. Well said OP, all of it.

pinkpyjamas · 01/05/2012 14:38

wannaBe, that is good to hear.
It shows that it is only a small, albeit gobby vocal, sector of football fans that lack the capacity to understand that a footballer can also be a rapist.

Alcina · 01/05/2012 14:39

Scootini, I think that was tried last weekend, but there were only a few who attempted to clap him at the 9th and 35th minutes (numbers relevant to his career) and were shouted down by other Sheffield fans. Can't find the link though.
