Asif you could keep the sex of the baby to yourself in this situation!

NotQuiteCockney · 08/02/2006 12:39

What a mess! Some paper was going on about the risk of a divorce, and how miserable the Empress is.

It sounds like there is loads of opposition to the idea of changing the succession rules.

Talk about pressure (on Princess Kiko)

Carmenere · 08/02/2006 12:45

Why is the prime minister sticking his nose in?

NotQuiteCockney · 08/02/2006 12:46

The Prime Minister is actually trying to help - he's trying to get the successsion laws changed, so that the existing princess can take be the empress. Otherwise, I don't know who it goes to.

fascinating gender politics... Will make for an interesting end of the year!

wwow,
what pressure.

Carmenere · 08/02/2006 12:57

Ok my dp just explained it to me (he is a bit of an expert on Japan). Basically the Prime Minister is quite forward thinking and thinks it would be good for Japan to move with the times and have at least the possibility of a female Emporess. The Royal family are quite conservative and this is probably the reason the news of this pregnancy was leaked.

blueshoes · 08/02/2006 13:15

Hmmm "quite conservative" . I think one might be hardpressed to find a royal family in a democratic nation more conservative than the Japanese one.

NotQuiteCockney · 08/02/2006 13:44

I think being conservative is a natural side effect of having grandparents (parents?) who were Living Gods.
