I've just read this on the BBC and had to post here. This beggars belief and frankly I just have no words.

The closing part of the article had me in tears. Why is it always, always the women that pay? I'm not an ardent feminist by any measure but I don't believe we could ever see an article in the future where men are forced to have the snip.

This is truly a tragedy for the women concerned. The context is that Uzbekistan is landlocked and has major water issues. Agriculture has been mismanaged and lessons learned. That being the case, I wonder if this is a government policy to evert a major humanitarian crisis?

PosiePaques · 12/04/2012 18:45

Debs....nothing wrong with being in favour of equal rights, just like us feminists!!

They robbed her of her children! I could just cry! When a baby dies, the unbearable agony can be VERY slightly alleviated when the parents have another baby...and yet they robbed her of this.

The injustice is just vile and making me so angry!

astreetcarnamedknackered · 20/04/2012 14:44

I can't believe this. I am rarely shocked at the low levels some regimes will sink to. But this is just so awful and unimaginable. That poor lady, I'm actually holding back the tears.

Interesting that none of the men in control have volunteered to have their bollocks chopped off in the name of population control.

DowagersHump · 20/04/2012 14:50

I heard the journalist who wrote this talking about it on From our Own Correspondent last Saturday. I was driving and it was so distressing I had to turn the radio off.

It's fucking barbaric

Uzbeckistan wasn't it?
i heard a report on Radio 4 - utterly shocking.

PrincessPrecious · 21/04/2012 13:05

Have no words for this - horrible. :(

StrangerintheHouse · 21/04/2012 13:15

Yes I heard it on R4 too. Awful, awful thing for these families.

When they said it was probably to lower the birth rate in order to lower unemployment and infant/maternal mortality statistics! Shock

These poor women don't even have control of their own bodies.
