Tanker drivers' strike

They have voted for strike action.

No word yet on when, or for how long.

But the rumour mill suggests they may want to hit the Easter get-away, so it might be worth thinking ahead about what journeys you want to make so you can plan fuel needs (and perhaps minimise need for last-minute panic-buying, which presumably might make things worse).

"Spread the panic "

It's amazing how many people are so unquestioningly obedient and incapable of free-will that they do exactly as the PM says. Hmm Own up. If you've filled up recently was it because a) everyone else was doing it so you tagged along, b) you genuinely needed to top up or c) David Cameron told you to do it?

myBOYSareBONKERS · 30/03/2012 11:56

mixture of A and B.

I had less than 1/4 of a tank so I would normally fill up then but we are going away next week in hubby car so I didn't really need to. However on my return I need to get to work (as a nurse) and so thought the sensible thing would be to fill up to guarantee me being able to get there

Blimey, just heard a woman has set fire to herself transferring petrol from one container to another in her kitchen. She has 40% burns. What is going on out there people??!! The government must feel really proud of their advice now!

sailorsgal · 30/03/2012 12:19

She had her cooker on aswell. Shock

CogitoErgoSometimes · 30/03/2012 12:21

The advice was to keep some petrol in a container... which a lof of us do anyway for things like lawnmowers.... not to splash the stuff around in a kitchen with the cooker on Hmm.

MyleeneCrass · 30/03/2012 12:22

That has to be Francis Maude's fault.

BexieID · 30/03/2012 12:54

I filled up today but as I said before, we are going on a 400 mile trip to my mums on sunday, so thought i'd better as DP was texting me saying the garages near to where he works in Glasgow were out! So we'll be keeping topped up for the journey back home on Easter monday! I also wouldn't have been bothered, but i've not seen my mum since October and shes not seen the kids since then, so think i'm allowed to be slightly panicked by other looney drivers!

clam · 30/03/2012 13:09

Why is it extra tax revenue for the government? Surely it would only be "extra" if people were making journeys they wouldn't otherwise make, hence needing extra fuel. If anything, people will be making fewer journeys. But this fuel will be used anyway at some point?
If they fill up now, it's just instead of next week or the week after.
(leave to one side the issue of the financial year ending)

Minimammoth · 30/03/2012 13:33

Is anyone else feeling manipulated?

susiedaisy · 30/03/2012 13:38

Our local garages are queued up on the road but why there's no strike!! I refuse to fill up in a panic, but am full of doubt because so many others are obviously panicking!!

RabidEchidna · 30/03/2012 13:42

But how stupid do you have to be to take petrol in to your home and pore it between containers by a naked flame?

susiedaisy · 30/03/2012 13:44

Well that is why any old bod can't drive a tanker!

hackmum · 30/03/2012 13:49

wasn't there a thread on here recently where someone admitted she didn't know petrol was highly flammable and couldn't understand why everyone was shouting at her when she lit a cigarette in a petrol station?

Anyway, I despise Francis Maude as much as the next person, but even I can't blame him for the fact that this woman decided to decant petrol next to a naked flame.

yehudiwho · 30/03/2012 17:04

why not - she wouldnt have had a jerry can if he hadnt panicked everyone

Hulababy · 30/03/2012 17:08

Was down to vapours ealrier, car said it could go 10 more miles. It's dh's car and it eats petrol - said 35 miles when I set put and only went about 5 miles or so!

So, sat in a queue for 20 minutes to get petrol, first garage had none left. this one had half the pumps with unleaded and diesel only. The others didn't have anything except super unleaded - but it was a much shorter queue - so I got super unleaded, cost more but at least I didn't queue for twice as long :)

Not sure how much my car has in it - Dh drove it this week. Think it will be only quarter full at the most. It is more economical at least but I'd normally be filling it up about now - like to run on full for most part.

When does any one believe what a politician says!

We got an email from work asking us to make sure we had fuel and to limit personal use!
