The gunman in Toulous. They have just tried to storm the house. This seems so odd

They haven't cleared the area.
They seem to have stormed the house by knocking on the front door Confused and three police officers have apparently been shot and the gunman seems to be dead.

Why did they wait so long only to storm this morning? Speculation is that whilst the police wanted to take him alive, there has been huge political pressure to end it.

I think they've made a bit of a mess of it but I can't say I'm sorry he's dead. The details of how he behaved at the school are sickening.

Pagwatch · 22/03/2012 11:04

They apparently threw flash bangs in over night. After silence over night they decided to go in. He was hiding in the bathroom and came out firing. He has been killed in the gun battle.

Two police injured. Neither seriously.

All over then.

Awful episode.

Being dead is too good for him. Although it was unlikely to end any other way I really wanted him to face trial and spend many years suffering in prison Angry. I just can't stop thinking of those poor children Sad. It's so normal, isn't it, dropping your kids off at school, expecting them to stay safely there for the day. There are just no words are there, to describe that horror and sadness? Sad

susiedaisy · 22/03/2012 11:07

Very sad Sad those poor parents of the children, as for how the police handled it I think if there were No cameras no internet etc they would handle things completely differently but because the whole world now watches their every move they have to have different tactics !

They are saying that the police had been watching Mereh for years, but he still managed to carry out 3 attacks. CNN is saying that he was interviewed by French intelligence at the end of 2011

CogitoErgoSometimes · 22/03/2012 11:14

I'm sure the french police have gone through all the tried and tested methods of getting a lone gunman out of a block of flats alive. Trouble is, when it comes to religious fanatics, they're not worried about dying. Where someone else would have enough of the stun grenades etc. and eventually give up, they're very happy to make themselves martyrs at the hands of the police.

Thank the lord it's over.

Shame he's dead and so not accountable for his actions.

Toulouse is such a beautiful place too.

worldgonecrazy · 22/03/2012 11:24

I'm sorry he's dead as they won't be able to find out more about his links to other terrorist groups. For some people, death really is too good.

My heart goes out to all the families affected

Why did they wait so long only to storm this morning?

Generally the idea is to contain him, keep him awake and talking. Firstly to see if there's a chance he will give up peacefully, secondly to tire him out so he's exhausted by the time the police decide to storm the building.

Where there's no hostages lives at stake, there's really no need to storm the place quickly.
