No idea - haven't heard the full evidence.

The press coverage (so far as it goes) suggests the trial has been really entertaining in places!

EdithWeston · 08/02/2012 12:38

Just seen the breaking news that he's been cleared. BBC story here.

niceguy2 · 08/02/2012 12:55

I don't know the full ins & outs but he's been tried and cleared by a jury so I guess he's innocent.

It does just go to show however that just because the taxman thinks you owe £x, doesn't necessarily mean you do.

LineRunner · 08/02/2012 13:29

Wow.

Didn't see that coming.

MrsDeeBee · 08/02/2012 13:30

Course he is !

I love Harry.

Grin
LineRunner · 08/02/2012 13:32

What about Milan Mandaric? Wasn't he up on charges as well?

mrswoodentop · 08/02/2012 13:32

Ridiculous,he was clearly guilty,he had an overseas bank account and failed to declare it.Just like when Ken Dodd got off he was completely guilty but "he gives a lot of money to charity and is a nice man" so they let him off ........Grrrr

MrsDeeBee · 08/02/2012 13:34

Line

Not guilty too.

LineRunner · 08/02/2012 13:39

I met him once (Milan). He shook my hand and was very 'old school' charming.

Bramshott · 08/02/2012 14:02

I think the upshot seems to have been that they couldn't prove the £189,000 paid into the offshore account was a bonus (despite Redknapp telling the NOTW it was) rather than as they both claimed "just a gesture of friendship".

Don't know about you, but I of course regularly set up off-shore accounts for my friends and pay tens of thousands of pounds into them, don't you Confused?

grovel · 08/02/2012 14:10

Well, the thing that struck me was that Redknapp paid millions in PAYE so why would he dodge £50k with an offshore account?

chipstick10 · 08/02/2012 14:51

I love love love Harry.

mrswoodentop · 08/02/2012 15:21

Because however much money people have it's still £50k.I used to have clients who paid millions in tX but they would still jump at any scheme to save some however small, often justifying it by saying they paid enough through PAYE

Heswall · 08/02/2012 15:30

Being a bit thick isn't a crime but if it was an ordinary person who "forgot" they would hound them to the ends of the earth to get the money back.

Oblomov · 08/02/2012 16:15

Edith, I bet you has been entertaining. I can just imagine it.
Am a bit surprised, but hey. Dh is a HUGE Spurs fan, and thus we all are, so pleased.

Bramshott · 08/02/2012 17:05

Generally anyone who says things like "I've paid more than my fair share of tax" and can name the amount they've paid over the years is actively looking for ways to avoid it when they can.

Melpomene · 08/02/2012 19:45

It's not quite clear from the article whether he's still having to pay the tax. There's a distinction between having underpaid tax and being guilty of a criminal offence of tax evasion, so just because he's been found not guilty of a crime wouldn't necessarily mean he doesn't need to pay HMRC.

My favourite part of the whole episode was his excuse that his mind was on David Beckham. Now that this precedent has been set I am planning to go on a shoplifting spree using the excuse that my mind was on David Beckham, especially in view of those H&M adverts.

LineRunner · 08/02/2012 19:48

I would have thought his mind would be on his alleged building that tragically burnt down in Portsmouth allegedly during the planning process. Allegedly.

retiredgoth2 · 08/02/2012 19:48

Did he have OJ Simpson's lawyer?

Just saying.

ThePathanKhansWitch · 08/02/2012 19:48

I heart Harry. I'm just wild about him in fact.Grin

What a waste of £8,000000 of public funds.

Oblomov · 09/02/2012 11:02

Waste 8 million on Harry.
Waste of 22 million on Dale Fram.
Nice to know our money is being well spent.

I would have prefered Harry to be found guilty (joke), only becasue then he might stay as our Fab Spurs Manager, instead of taking the silly England Job.
He could get Spurs into the Champions League again this season. In charge of a team with Bale and Modric in it, is no bad thing. And the alternative? Take the prestigious England Job, with Rooney, Lampard and Terry. No Beckham, No Scolesy. Maybe hoping that Wiltshire and Walcot come good for you. And then you get thrashed by ... Cameroon. Oh yeah, thats prestigious. Beats playing Inter Milan and Barcelona, in Champions League, by miles, doesn't it ? Hmm

LineRunner · 09/02/2012 11:09

Prince 'Arry for England and the Realm. Looks like a dead cert now, that twot David Davies from the FA just endorsed him on breakfast telly.

Bramshott · 09/02/2012 11:22

Phew isn't he lucky that the verdict came in yesterday - the same day Capello resigned. Anyone would think it was a set-up Hmm . . .

sue52 · 09/02/2012 12:05

I find it unbelievable that HMRC would have brought a costly high profile case without water tight evidence. I can't help thinking that celebrity pixie dust helped the jury make up it's mind.
