The Leveson Inquiry

I know there is a thread on Hugh Grant, but wanted to start one to discuss the bits and bobs that's been happening. Might be worth having one thread to cover this? Ignore if you disagree!

Anyway, was interested in a couple of things that have happened today. Diane Watson's parents giving evidence, not directly linked to phone hacking, but as general evidence regarding the PCC's toothless, spineless dealings with complaints about the press and their intrusions. Interesting and compelling evidence. Particularly as they have been campaigning on the issue for years, long before the whole phone hacking thing blew up. This is what the BBC have said they have been doing over the years because of their experience of the press at large -

The submission added that Mr and Mrs Watson had:

direct contact with the newspaper and the magazine (publications that they felt were wrong on what they wrote about their daughter)

complained to the Press Complaints Commission

contacted their own MP and MEP

engaged in correspondence with the Scottish and Home Offices, the Scottish Parliament Committee's Justice Committees and the European Commission of Human Rights

and lodged a petition with the Scottish Parliament on 10 May, 2002, regarding wider policy issues.

Their son committed suicide, with clippings of press articles written about his sister, found in his hand.

Moving onto Gary Flitcroft - had 2 affairs, tried to get the stories snuffed out, was refused and then was hounded by the press. He blames is father's suicide some years later on the publicity given to his affairs, resulting in a man who already suffered from depression, losing interest in watching his son play football because of the publicity his affairs got in the press, and then the chanting at football grounds which were too much for him.

Then, there was Elle Macpherson's assistant, accused of speaking to journalists on her private life/crumbling relationship, who was forced to go to rehab for 'alcoholism' as Elle felt she wouldn't have betrayed her trust if it wasn't for her alcoholism. She went to rehab, but then got sacked afterwards anyway. She wrote to the police on realising that her phone could have been hacked, but wasn't answered. Bizarre story.

The various QCs or whoever, commenting on the fact the Mail on Sunday have now attacked Hugh Grant on a personal level, because of his evidence yesterday, when it was supposedly agreed no attacks would follow anyone who gave evidence.

It's mental so far, the picture being painted (granted by those on the receiving end of the press intrusion) is just awful. Watched some ex NOTW journo on sky trying to justify the Mail's reaction, with a Daily Star Journo actually backing Grant in his stance re his daughter's mother etc.

It's all pretty gripping stuff.

So far, we have had 2 people mentioned as having committed suicide, which their families believe were linked to the press coverage of the stories linked to them. I am genuinely wondering how many more stories we'll hear along those lines.

I don't think it's being done to make them feel like they're on trial, I think it's more because, to be blunt about it, this is what will change public perception of the media. Watching the McCanns is horrible, but it's no good burying our heads in the sand - this is the result of the invasive and/or libellous approaches of certain members of the press, and that is one of the key issues in the Inquiry.

GypsyMoth · 23/11/2011 15:23

I know. Really feel for them tho.

pinkee · 23/11/2011 15:26

I agree PastGrace - I feel very sad watching this but this has shown a real insight into how the media operate. Imagine getting home and having your diary splashed across the phone. Weekend after weekend ruined.

Imagine having the NOTW on your case at a time of grief. Imagine having to utilise the media but have them continually invade your life and stalk you?

I have been trying to watch proceedings as I just can not imagine how you would deal with press intrusion. It has completed changed my perception of the media.

Freelance journos should be accountable like everyone else should.

How the people like McCanns maintain their dignity is just amazing - it makes me very sad.

Imagine having your weekends continually wrecked due to the media.

The women who worked for Elle MacPherson who lost her role and reputation drove home to me the wider fall out.

PastGrace · 23/11/2011 15:29

They are so composed aren't they?

I've been really impressed with how everyone has been actually. I can't imagine how horrific it is to have to be going through this and reliving some of the worst moments of your life

GypsyMoth · 23/11/2011 15:32

Makes me wonder if I should ever buy a newspaper again.... But then of course the 'media' extends even further these days

It's been horrific, and I'm embarrassed to say I had NO idea how far all this went

pinkee · 23/11/2011 15:36

Yes, so composed. I have so much respect for the people taking part. It has made me determined to question more of what I read. It has also probably made me very weary of having a public image.

Just how the media manipulate the images and distort the truth is shocking - it has been a revelation to just see people, the human face of those taking part clearly laying out the toll of press intrusion, without the spin that the media put on them.

PastGrace · 23/11/2011 15:38

I don't think any of us did really... I'm doing a media law module at uni at the moment and it's been pretty eye opening...

pinkee · 23/11/2011 15:45

It must be a fascinating to study media law - good luck with your studies but watching this is sobering.

Conditional fee arrangements I imagine don't matter in the long run. The repeated damage must be so hard to handle.

FellatioNelson · 23/11/2011 15:49

'It has made me determined to question more of what I read.'

Absolutely pinkee. Unfortunately we on MN are already in the minority, in that we are largely a fairly intelligent and cynical bunch, pat to question and analyse - sadly the majority is not. I do hope people who previously would not have taken something as gospel because it's in the paper will watch this and the penny will drop.

It's not just about 'truth' though - it's about the gutter press's warped sense of entitlement that we have a 'right to know' the intimate, and often totally irrelevant details of people's lives just because they work in an industry that makes them recognisbale on the street. Or, like the McCann'sl, have been thrust unwillingly into the limelight.

FellatioNelson · 23/11/2011 15:50

sorry that should say 'prone to question and analyse' - I have no idea where 'pat' came from!

FellatioNelson · 23/11/2011 15:51

and 'would have' taken as gospel, not 'would not'. Sorry! ARRGGHHH!

PastGrace · 23/11/2011 15:57

I think one of the reasons the McCann "evidence" has been so interesting, and hopefully will be so succesful, is because they are as Fellatio says just people who have been thrust into the limelight, but they are also extremely eloquent - I'm finding today especially interesting to listen to. I think they've managed to convey the impact on a previously ordinary person clearly and with grace: this cannot have been easy and I only hope that this will really push the general public to understand what the wider problem is.

It's interesting though, isn't it, that we are all sitting here discussing it but we are only aware of it through the media. We've become so dependent on having access to information 24/7, in a variety of sources, that the enormity of what we are seeing I think nearly loses its impact. It's quite incredible to think that we are across the country (/world?) talking about these two people, sitting in a single room in London.

pinkee · 23/11/2011 15:57

Yes you've got me thinking just how do you hold the media to account?

I do like the way Leveson is operating.

I have complete respect for the McCanns.

FellatioNelson · 23/11/2011 16:01

Anyway, in the meantime, WTF has happened to Kay Burley's face? Grin She seems to have turned into Daisy Duck.

chipstick10 · 23/11/2011 16:17

Oh gawd the McCanns, they make me feel quite violent. Poor poor Maddie

GypsyMoth · 23/11/2011 16:25

Chipstick? Violent? In what way?

chipstick10 · 23/11/2011 16:31

They make me feel very very angry. I cant look at them. I cant listen to them blaming the media for putting Maddie in danger, goodness the irony.

lampli · 23/11/2011 16:32

Is it just me or does Robert Jay look like Erland Josephson?

Totally agree about Kay Burley's face. Especially when she puts on her serious expression. She looks like she is melting.

chipstick10 · 23/11/2011 16:36

Grin I sat next to Kay Burley on the train in the summer. She is very petite and alot younger and softer looking in the flesh and this was before the face lift

pinkee · 23/11/2011 16:39

What a weird comment chipstick - I mean your comment about the McCanns not Kay Burley Shock

NormanTebbit · 23/11/2011 16:40

Did anyone watch Deadline? The documentary about the New York Times.was on bbc 4 last night. It shows the business desk covering the demise of the print press and the challenges of competing with online media. These are journalists at the top of their game. They are ruthless, rigorous and judicious.

They covered the demise of the Tribune media group and footage was shown of the new owner who basically told his staff he couldn't give a stuff about journalistic standards, just the bottom line -profit.

Our press is owned largely by huge conglomerates whose only interest is profit. What sells? Tittle tattle, porn and pix of puppies.

chipstick10 · 23/11/2011 16:41

i dont think its weird, i dont like them. They make me feel uncomfortable and uneasy. Nowt wrong with expressing it.

lampli · 23/11/2011 16:43

I recorded Deadline - is it worth watching then Norman?

pinkee · 23/11/2011 16:44

But why do they make you feel like that chipstick - is it because of the appalling press coverage you have read about them????? What informs your opinion of them???

Thanks for the docu tip Norman - I will make sure I watch it on iplayer.

NormanTebbit · 23/11/2011 16:46

It is fascinating. Well worth watching.
