Anyone else think it was disgusting?
Is there another thread about it somewhere that I've missed?
Anyone?
Please?

What was disgusting? What have I missed?

Clarinet60 · 30/10/2003 23:35

You had to be there, but it was a character assassination (too many sssss's I think).
It was cringe TV. He asked her stupid questions, was argumentative about her film, missed the point, then accused her of being wary and defensive when she became uncomfortable.

emsiewill · 30/10/2003 23:37

Oh no, I can't believe I missed it. I did see about 1 minute, but didn't pick anything up from that. I normally watch Parky, but in-laws are here atm, so "normal" life is out of the window.
Must go to bed now.

Angeliz · 30/10/2003 23:51

oh Droile i'm so glad it wasn't just me! I thought it was awful from the word go and told dp that i would have walked out! Thne yesterday my mam and sister both said they hadn't seen it but "apparently" she came across as a right bitch!!!! I defended her and said it was Parky attacking her....it was awful!

Angeliz · 31/10/2003 00:01

and i totally understood her when she was talking about "romance" and "true love",,,,,it seemed that Parky had made his mind up before he met her!

alibubbles · 31/10/2003 08:31

I'd watched the first bit but not Meg Ryan, and the people who I was staying with said the next morning that I hadn't missed anything as SHE was awful not him.

Meg Ryan was also not good when interviewed by Kate Garraway(?) on GMTV, she found her one of the most difficult people to interview and the GMTV crew were taking the mickey, but they did say she got off a bit more lightly than Parky. Kate G said it was not an easy interview and she was made to feel uncomfortable asking anything as all she got was yes/no answers.

Davros · 31/10/2003 08:37

I thought SHE was awful, rude, unco-operative and defensive. After all, she chose to go on a live interview with a journalist (he's not just a TV presenter). I thought he did well not to deck her!

hermykne · 31/10/2003 08:42

she was also interviewed in the observer two wks ago and came accross bably there to, and that she really was trying to be all esoteric and intelligent.....

she frowned through the whole interview with parky and when susannah commented on her shoes she just shrugged and mumbled something....

Tinker · 31/10/2003 10:59

She was very cold and aloof, seemed to be the typical humourless up herself actress. Think he just got pissed off with her. Very bizarre moment when Susannah (of Trinny and...) complimented her on her shoes and she gave them a look to say 'I haven't got a clue who you are'

willow2 · 31/10/2003 11:03

alibubbles - aw come on, the GMTV woman's questioning was terrible. There was nothing original about her questioning, indeed she asked some really dumb ones - eg: you've been quoted as saying you will never talk about your relationships, why wont you? - that could only result in really short answers ("because I don't like discussing my private life" and were pretty much guaranteed to get Meg's back up. Didn't see Parkinson, so can't comment on that, but can only hope his line of questioning was somewhat more intelligent.

tamum · 31/10/2003 11:03

I'm with Davros, Tinker and hermykne on this one, I thought she came across as quite unnecessarily defensive and appallingly rude. I'm not a great fan of Parky, but I actually thought he handled it reasonably well. Unless he'd been openly insulting her backstage before she went on I couldn't see why she felt the need to be so rude right from the start.
It's funny that we've interpreted it in such different ways, isn't it?

kayleigh · 31/10/2003 11:17

I'm on Parkys side ! I thought she was as rude as hell. Completely arrogant and stuck up. She didn't give him any help. I thought he did brilliantly faced with that.

naughtynoonoo · 31/10/2003 11:17

I normally quite like Meg Ryan and had Parky on on Saturday to see Alfie!, when Meg Ryan came on she was very non respondent to his questions and parky did mention this, it got so boring and I felt like he was wasting his time, I just turned off as my book was more interesting. These things are pre-recorded aren't they - so why didn't they delete the whole thing. She has lost brownie points with me anyway, she couldn't even be bothered to meet and greet her fans at the premiere of her new film - she seems to have forgottten if it weren't for her fans she would be a nobody, not like good old Tommy boy!

alibubbles · 31/10/2003 11:49

willow2, I should have said I didn't see her be interviewed by kate, only the ribbing afterwards about what a crap interview it was.

Clarinet60 · 31/10/2003 13:41

Well Angeliz & Willow2, it looks like it's just me and thee!
I didn't see the interview with Kate, but .....
I understood what she meant about true love and romance, and she talked about the new film a lot. She only became monosyllabic when Parky's questioning grew more stupid and personal, and I think the frowning was to avoid decking him. I was frowning and shaking my head too. I think she did really well not to walk out. He seemed to be trying to argue that black was white re divorce statistics, and faced with such illogic there was little further for her to say. He suggested that her own failed relationships had made her prickly which was rude, as anyone in that situation would have bristled. Trinny and Suzannah tried to lighten it by commenting on her shoes, but I think she was too far gone to respond. The crux of the matter is that in his eyes, she was OK when she was being all light and fluffy and girly and giggly and faking orgasms in 'When Harry...' etc, but now that she's made a more feminist, grown-up film that shatters the romantic myth (1950's housewife, etc, is the world Parky inhabits - of course romantic love is not a con Parky - let me fetch you your slippers love), he doesn't like it. He's shocked at the content of the film and misunderstands its premise. Fair enough, he's entitled to his opinion, but when hers differed from his, he lambasted her for it. So it's OK to fake orgasms on film as long as your're fluffy, but don't try to be a grown-up woman debating intelligently - you're a harridan, instantly.
Same old prejudice I'm afraid. I wasn't surprised at that from Parkinson at all.

Clarinet60 · 31/10/2003 13:46

I had no idea that she had been difficult in interviews before, but perhaps that was Parky's agenda. He was expecting shite so he was nasty from about 3 minutes in.
Frank Skinner or Jonathan Ross could have handled her with respect along with a bit of ribbing, if that's what people wanted. Time Parky retired!!!!!

OP posts:
lilibet · 31/10/2003 13:48

only saw a fwe minutes of it, but I thought that she was a pain and dp thought that he was! Anyone else think that she looked like she had had her lips done?

Davros · 31/10/2003 14:16

Have to confess I didn't see the start of the interview but all I saw that could be considered probing about her personal life was when he asked her something like, do you think the well-known problems you've had in your personal life have made it possible for you to take on this sort of role? It was something like that, not a deep probe into Dennis vs Russell! She seemed shocked that he'd said such a thing which was actually about her stupid film and her development as an actress.
In the Radio TImes interview Andrew Duncan seems to find her just as difficult and arrogant as Parkie.
I had no view of what I thought of her before, in fact expected to really like her

Tinker · 31/10/2003 15:02

Definitely wondered what had happened to her face! Touch of the Lesley Ash

Clarinet60 · 31/10/2003 17:20

the stuff about her personal life was pertinent to the initial disagreement and the whole thing had to be seen in context. if you'd missed a bit it wouldn't have 'read' the same.

OP posts:
Davros · 31/10/2003 19:05

Far enough Droile, wish I'd seen it all now!

jasper · 31/10/2003 23:35

Have not read the other replies but I thought MR came across as a self obsessed twit and Parky did well under the circumstances.

jasper · 31/10/2003 23:36

She kept banging on about Jane someone, the director of the latest film.
COMPLETE YAWN....

Dinny · 01/11/2003 00:32

Jane Campion, isn't it? Did The Piano? The film actually looks wuite good - but I think Meg R is awful. Especially her trout lips. Mind you, Parky is annoying too - usually so sycophantic, so a change there, I suppose.
