Was driving to get the kids from school just before midday and there was a discussion about a state school in Wigan , I think, which is introducing an "optional" PE kit, supplied by Nike, at a cost of £78 . Rachel was one of the interviewees.

I'd be objecting on the grounds that it was Nike as well as the cost. Didn't hear item though, was lost in teh bowels of the Toys r Us checkout.

Disgraceful.

How dare they encourage that kind of brand-worship. I'm apoplectic with disbelief. How dare they undermine all the messages decent parents are trying to impart to their children about consumerism etc.

I expect their home-economics lessons (if they have them) are sponsored by McDonalds.

Exactly. the school statement suggested the uptake of the idea was good and the decision had been taken in consultation with pupils and parents, but just how much peer and parental pressure is involved seems to have been overlooked. There is even an easy payment scheme for less well off parents to be able to kit their kids out in this latest gear. I'm sure Nike wouldn't be getting involved if there weren't a good profit to be gained too.

This is the most hideous idea I've heard in ages. I'd take my child out of any school that did that.
