In other news - bears shit in woods Hmm

Apparently Pakistani and Bangladeshi families have large numbers of children "because of benefits".

Now I am not Bangladeshi but I doubt many people have children just for the reason of "extra benefits".

Need to take the woman round with me to see the poor housing and limited income of some families I see ( from ALL parts of the community). Might suggest she does so before spouting forth shit in future.

Grr!

Oh and the Tory apologists can fuck off - anyone who thinks "benefits" are the sole reason anyone has children are as gullible as this peer. "Former" Tory indeed.....

She is quick to differentiate the ethnicity of the group by declaring it is not an issue that affects Indian people.

And only three quarters of benefits for a 3rd child,half for the 4th?
So,DC4 only needs half a meal,then.

Leaving aside the racial slurs here I think she's got a point about reducing benefits for third and fourth children and subsequent children.

We have an over-population problem in Britain, particularly the SE. We can't afford all these children on lots of grounds. And that means children of prosperous professional families (I know quite a few doctors with four or five kids) as well as first-generation Bangladeshis.

If you want to have lots of children, fine. But I don't think the tax payer should be paying benefits for a large brood.

Sorry, meant to add that you'd only reduce benefits for FUTURE children. I don't think you should take them away from existing children.

It's the way she's gone about this, I doubt she can evidence her accusations in any meaningful way at all. This is about reducing benefits (and each will have their own opinion about that) and about nothing else. She may have observed a higher birth rate in the communities she casts a slur upon but unless she has personally asked each and every family why their families are large then she has no basis for her accusations. If I were Bangladeshi or Pakistani I would be hugely offended by her comments.

There is no excuse for people to have large families that they cannot afford in 2011. None at all. Someone who states that shouldn't face accusations of racism.

I agree that the tone of her comments was unfortunate, and that the needless comparison with Indian families could be viewed as inflammatory, but it seems to be the case that Pakistani and Bangladeshi families in the UK do have more children ( here and here ) whilst also being less likely to be in employment

And to be fair the ONS statistics I linked to do also suggest that this is not the case for Indian families, so a sensible debate could certainly be had about that.

DDD - In developing countries it is common to have large families for purposes of mutual support and survival. That works if children go out to work, which is common. Here in England that is obviously illegal but we have the benefits system which amounts to the same thing. It may be going too far to say Bangladeshis etc specifically have children to obtain benefits, but certainly there is no disincentive to change their culturally ingrained habits. So I think your rant is misplaced. Immigration is a major issue for this country now and yet there is a lack of intelligent public discourse - not surprising perhaps because no sooner does someone stick their head above the parapet than they get it with both barrels from someone like you! The trouble is that eventually lack of discourse leads to nasty extremism - so take a chill pill why don't you. Wink
