Buncefield Depot Explosion ? services affected
Many schools and county council facilities will be closed tomorrow (Monday, December 12) as a result of this morning?s explosions and fire at the Buncefield Fuel Depot, Hemel Hempstead.

The decision to close the schools has been taken after seeking expert advice about the plume of smoke above the blaze and the potential risk to health, and the likelihood of severe traffic congestion.

The council has also decided to close day centres, libraries, the household waste site and other county council buildings in the Hemel area.

The following day centres will be closed on Monday
Jarman Day Centre, Old Crabtree Lane, St Albans Lane, Hemel, HP2 4EX
Greenhills, Tenzing Road, Hemel HP2 4HS
Jubilee Day Services, Catherine Street, St Albans, AL3 5NX
Butterwick Day Services, Hill End Lane, St Albans, AL4 0TX
Borehamwood Day Services, Aycliffe Road, Borehamwood, WDX 4EI
Balmoral Day Services, Clive Way, Station Estate, Watford, WD24 4PX
Shepherd Centre, Middleton Road, Rickmansworth, WD3 2JP
Northwick Day Centre, Northwick Road, South Oxhey, WD19 6RS

The following libaries will be closed on Monday

Also mobile libaries will not run in the areas affected.

As this is a constantly changing situation we will be updating these messages regularly and residents can also ring 01438 737555 or ( from area codes 01923 and 0208) 01923 471555 from 8am to 8pm weekdays, and 9am to 4pm on Saturdays.

The county council is advising residents to stay in, shut windows and doors and tune into local radio stations. If windows are shattered, put plastic/polythene over them to stop the smoke entering your home.

The advice from doctors is that people in the plume could be affected by smoke-related symptoms, such as eye, skin or respiratory tract irritation, while people in surrounding areas could find that existing conditions, such as asthma or bronchitis could be made worse.

Avoid breathing in the smoke - if residents need health advice they are advised to call NHS Direct on 0845 46 47.

Non-residents are asked to avoid the area if at all possible.

Local radio stations include
Chiltern Radio 97.6
BBC 3 Counties 104.5

Private householders whose houses have been damaged are advised to take whatever immediate action they can themselves (e.g. calling out local glaziers, etc), and then contact their insurance companies. Any householders with major structural concerns about their homes should contact Dacorum Borough Council?s building control service on 01442 228221/01442 228222. Council tenants are advised to contact Dacorum Borough Council on 01442 228221/01442 228222

Blimey, that's every single school in my town. You can see the cloud but it hasn't actually had any effect here. Do you think they are overreacting?

THIS IS A QUOTGE FROM THE HERTS POLICE WEBSITE

December 11, 2005
Final update of the day
By Corporate Communication Dept

A final update on the Buncefield Oil Depot incident for this evening.

We can confirm again that schools, libraries and day centres across the county will be closed tomorrow. This is to ease traffic congestion.

For further information, please check www.hertsdirect.org, or www.herts.police.uk which has lists of those schools affected by these closures. If you cannot get onto the internet, listen to local radio stations and as a last resort, ring the schools directly.

In terms of casualties, the final update is 41 people have suffered minor injuries during this incident and a further two people will remain in hospital overnight.

Once again we would advise people in the first instance to contact NHS Direct on 0845 46 47. Equally if people feel seriously ill to make contact with out of hours GP or in extreme circumstances attend their A&E.

Once again the main message is stay in, keep windows closed and remain listening to local news programmes

May I add Mount Pleasant Lane junior school to that list. It should be on there but has been missed off the website.

Thank you Christie for informing me about that.

Now I've just got to put up with my kids bored and bickering all day stuck in the house for the second day running

I live in Hatfield which is roughly 15-20 miles away and they are closing half of the schools over here too.
We are not even in the smoke path!!
Can someone explain why they are shutting schools so far away?

We live in St Albans and I cant understand why all these schools are closed as there is absolutely no problem here or in Harpenden or in Redbourn or in the villages. My sons school is a private prep and is very much open and running a normal day. We can see the plume from our house ans could see the flames from the lanes on the way there this morning but there is no smog. the school runs an emergancy phone rely in case of really bad weather anyway and would call us if they were concerned. I can understand closing Adeyfields or leverstock green schools but not the rest. Maybe the LEA just fancied a couple of days of

are some of the schools in WGC and hatfield closed because of the air quality??

I know this is totally weird and not really related but I let our 2 cats outside today for the first time since the fire and when they went out they stood and sniffed the air in a very strange way as if they could smell something. They stood just outside the door smelling the air.

We are about 8 miles away and in a valley

We could smell the smoke when we got home last night but I think we have just got used to it. My asthma is pretty ropey at the moment but I think it is just the time of year
