Where will they go?

In this article about the Nottingham riots (specifically about an 11yo girl being charged, but that's a whole other thread), it says:

"The city council has also said it will seek to evict any council tenants found to have taken part in the trouble."

So... they will be out on the street then?!

Not sure this is the right approach...

"What next? Putting in prison everyone in Tesco cos of one shoplifter? Its the same mentality" Currysecret, its nothing alike at all. For a start people are strangers in Tesco and wont have any part in the upbringing of the shoplifter.

By enforcing this clause perhaps parenting may change for the better if people know that they will lose their home if children/family members break the law. Perhaps it may even make them grateful for the fact that they have a home worth x that they pay well below the normal rent if they actually pay rent.

To read these posts you would think some people one here were never 17 Confused

GypsyMoth · 14/08/2011 12:58

Lol

The ignorance about benefits is staggering!!

Posters seriously believe only benefit claimants live in council houses?? Madness. Educate yourselves!!!

crazynanna · 14/08/2011 13:00

I read somewhere recently that over 80% of HB claimants are actually working, so not all CH tenants are on unemployment benefits.

Laquitar · 14/08/2011 13:14

Will we all have the Child Benefit cut because we had a parking ticket then? According to some of you we shouldn't 'be happy to receive help'

Happymum how would you stop a 6 foot teenager leaving the house if he was determined?

Stop his pocket money?
Take his sweeties away?

Unless you are an advocate of physical violence against children what do you suggest?

A compliant, placid 12 year old can become a stroppy, angry 15 year old even if they have been bought up by commited and involved parents.

I was texting my son every few hours to tell him to stay indoors. He did. A few short months ago the chances are he wouldnt have. I dont think he would have stolen anything but I do think he would have been desperate to be caught up in the excitment.

Look at the faces of the kids in the photos from the looting. They are on a high. They are teenagers and teenagers to stupid, impulsive and thoughtless, selfish things.

Even ones from nice homes and those that dont live in council houses.

organicgardener · 14/08/2011 20:34

Are the workhouses full?

Maybe this is the answer to the surplus population.

Let them eat cake.

maypole1 · 14/08/2011 23:03

WonkyDonkeys they can live with the bleeding heart liberals they seemed to be very worried about these people who breed criminals

maypole1 · 14/08/2011 23:09

thefirstMrsDeVere he wouldn't get out of the door he would have to kill me first even if I had to sleep in the doorway

But I suppose it's easy to just ring your hands

Why were you texting your on to stay in were the he'll were you at 3 am when this was all going on.

" I dont think he would have stolen anything but I do think he would have been desperate to be caught up in the excitment"

How awful yuk as long as he was only watching people get killed, burnt out of their homes and only watched thats ok yuk

And this is exactly why these people need to be booted out of their homes I hope with that parenting view your teens live no were near me

Pan · 14/08/2011 23:13

people who breed criminals...like parents of MPs and Law Lords for recent example? Offending is pretty much a classless activity.

maypole1 · 14/08/2011 23:20

What they did was wrong but sadly not against the law.

And to be fair 4 people haven't been killed because they lied about their expenses.

Just because the mps were getting away with what they legally could but was not morally right dose not give these people the right to loot, murder and burn

Just my view its sad so many try to justify these people

Pan · 14/08/2011 23:44

yep, take your point maypole about the consequences of actions.

what some MPs did do was against the law which is why they are serving time in prison.

merrymouse · 15/08/2011 19:09

The MP's weren't getting away with what they legally could though - it was found that they were deliberately claiming more than they should out of a sense of entitlement. Presumably they thought it would be OK because everybody else was doing it, a line which I think will be taken by many in the court houses of England this week. The line between stealing a TV when you weren't supposed to and claiming for a duck house when you weren't supposed to is just too easy to draw. Maybe the youths could be allowed to sell their trainers for charity?

The MP's are also being a bit obscure about where these families are supposed to go - under a bridge? Leaving aside whether any of these families deserve to be under a bridge, as a law abiding citizen, I'm not sure how that is supposed to make me feel more confident about walking the streets at night.

I think they are trying to scare people by making an example, whether they follow through or not. In practice it sounds like an expensive administrative headache.
