My best friend from uni is now in the Met - worrying.

Listening to lbc radio which are covering, god it seems quite widespread, people looting, bloke said no police on brixton high street people looting at will . The world has gone mad.

I am so upset. So, so upset :( I can't bring myself to go outside and look at the damage.

Thankfully my children slept through the whole thing (we are quite far away from the high street). I was kept awake all night by police helicopters and looters running down my road with flatscreen TVs. Thankfully the children go to school in the opposite direction and don't have to go through the high street.

A community that has worked so hard will suffer because of a violent minority. They are thugs motivated by greed... there have been peaceful protests here recently about cuts and police violence.

They have attacked their own community, it makes me sick :(

They've smashed up my nearest shops, Tescos local and Carphone warehouse. On the south circular. My 80 year old neighbour does her food shopping in M&S, depending on how badly that's been damaged I've told her we'll take her to a different one. DP drove though Brixton at 7am, said it didn't look to bad, piles of burnt rubbish in the road, but then he didn't notice the smashed up shops.
The festival looked so good yesterday.

On the day of the Brixton Splash as well, an event to celebrate how far Brixton has moved on since the riots of the 80s. Heart-wrenching.

I live above a shop not too far from Brixton and barely slept a wink last night, imagining that thugs would be torching our home. Thankfully it wasn't as bad as the Tottenham riots but that's little consolation to the people whose homes and businesses have been ruined by a minority of idiots.

Last year after the Brixton Splash I explained to my DCs what had happened in the 80s. It just breaks my heart that just one year on we are back here again.

It was sad to watch rumours spreading like wildfire on Twitter over the weekend. It was like some were almost willing riots to spread to other specific areas, then reacting with mock horror/glee later when it seem things were cropping up there. It's a weird and sad combination of an electronic grapevine crossed with rubbernecking.

There isn't much in the news about Brixton, other than mention of disturbances in Brixton High Street and Cold Harbour Lane (doesn't say when) and that the tube station is closed (ongoing).

Very little about Brixton, I agree. Perhaps it wasn't that bad but I had no idea about the guy who was shot on Saturday by Police. I guess they're not allowed to report on it in case it stirs up more bad feeling?

My office is in the high street in Brixton - I haven't been in yet as I have been in court. I am not sure how bad it is going to be.

Well, there is nothing going on in Brixton now. Just been down to the high street and everything is closed off between Coldharbour Lane and the police station. Buses are redirected along Acre Lane which is absolutely heaving with traffic.

It does not look as bad as I feared, but could not see everything from the bottom of the street.

Peckham too - not the Peckham library?? I have good memories of that place too :(

LadyEvenstar has you friend actually seen it - the library I mean - or are they going off rumours? The phones4u on Rye Lane HAS been attacked - windows smashed, shutters down and staff standing outside looking shaken bless them - but apart from that top end of Rye Lane looked calm just 20 mins ago.

Tee, I am not sure what she saw tbh she was shaken as she was out with her 4yr old daughter.

FWIW a lot of the shops on Rye Lane have closed down or are closing down already. I think if you can avoid going out that's a good plan. I have called into work to cancel conference calls so I can pick the kids up early, get back and just lock the doors for the evening. I'll let DP in if he brings me though

This sounds just like the riots in the 80s. I was a student in Manchester then living in the affected areas and a lot of it was fuelled by rumours, I guess that is even worse now with Twitter and modern communications.

The parallels of times being hard, people feeling that life is becoming more and more uphill and a ruling elite that seem to not know and care are there too.

Brixton wasn't quite as bad as I thought it might be. They weren't letting anyone onto the high street but we had files in our office for cases going on that day so I managed to get a police escort into the office!

It was more eerie than anything. Completely deserted, empty high street with crowds standing at the end just looking at the damage. Lots of broken windows - we were crunching over broken glass to get to the office. It was also windy so rubbish was blowing down the road - it was a bit like one of those deserted towns in an old western.

They let me in beside Morleys so I didn't see what damage there was down towards the police station.

I drove past Clapham Junction this morning and that really is in a mess. I am at court there this afternoon and I am expecting chaos - they had to cancel all trials at some of the London magistrates' courts yesterday as the officers who were supposed to be giving evidence had been drafted in to deal with the riots.
