Enfield riots?

Just seen on Twitter and in a few articles like this, that there are meant to be plans for a riot in Enfield tonight and riot police are in the town centre?

Used to live there, and got family there (luckily a fair distance from the centre), but fucking hell! What the hell is going on?

Where is the Mayor of London whilst all these riots are kicking off - what a surprise the tory boy is sunning himself on holiday and doesn't see a need to return to London! Boris Johnson is so out of touch with Londoners it's amazing and so depressing

Just catching up on the damage from last night.

Anyone read about the police officers hit by a car while they were making an arrest? :(

the extent of it was a suprise Too many generations of young unemployed

WhoseGotMyEyebrows · 08/08/2011 10:23

Shit! Didn't even realise that was happening! My family live there!

Empusa · 08/08/2011 10:36

Tbh chasing from the sound of the way trouble moved about, it seems like there was an organised gang behind it, who were able to jump into cars and drive off to the next target. Leaving the police behind to deal with the opportunists who just joined in.

I think there's a bit more to it than unemployment.

whose Hope they are ok, I imagine they'll have stayed indoors and been safe!

Sounds like it was only cars set on fire in Enfield last night, not buildings.

Brixton seems to have got it much worse.

More liberal excuses for violent, disgraceful, criminal behaviour. Those that are arrested will get their wrists slapped or a few months community service. It hardly seems worth arresting them to be honest.

SardineQueen · 08/08/2011 11:38

Brixton looks a mess.

I think this will carry on for quite a while.

GypsyMoth · 08/08/2011 11:47

So there will be more tonight?

Am assuming these looters/rioters don't have to be in bed at a reasonable hour for work in the morning!?

conculainey · 08/08/2011 11:48

The Met need to get a properly trained and equipped riot squad and a snatch in to sort this problem out, they are totally out of their dept when it comes to riots.

Empusa · 08/08/2011 11:53

conculainey I think they do. But they were stretched thin last night

OP posts:
GypsyMoth · 08/08/2011 11:55

I think the met are actually better equipped and trained than most other forces. It's their budget which needs the extra work!!

I'm ex met police myself and thank god for the tsg help on a few occasions!!

nicknamesarehardtothinkof · 08/08/2011 12:07

What about getting the army in if this carries on? I don't mean anything heavy handed but just more people who can stop them?

akaemmafrost · 08/08/2011 12:40

Trouble is the army IS heavy handed, thats the point. And I speak as an ex army person for many years myself. They have a certain rigid outlook and won't have the same training and tolerance for the every day civilian that the police have. I don't particularly want to see soldiers on my street when I take my kids out to be honest. However if it carries on then something will have to be done and thats really the only realistic option.

GypsyMoth · 08/08/2011 12:42

Do we have any soldiers left?

akaemmafrost · 08/08/2011 12:43

I certainly think DC should get his arse back off holiday pronto.

Loustere · 08/08/2011 13:27

I think we're in an age where the power of Twitter has been underestimated

conculainey · 08/08/2011 13:49

There is a stark contrast between the riot control in London and that of N.I, the police there are all armed with sidearms and some with machine guns, baton rounds and gas. The PSNI also use water cannons to great effect and are certainly not afraid to crack a few heads when necessary, why can the MET police not use the same tactics or get the PSNI in to sort this rabble out?

activate · 08/08/2011 13:49

IMHO these are not civil disruption riots - these are excuses to pillage and loot and vandalise

Boris J has come back.

Why should DC come back because a few kids want to loot shops on a pretext and their friends have Twittered them? Don't we feel confident in Clegg's ability to handle things?

teejwood · 08/08/2011 14:16

loustere as we all know twitter is also full of rot. about an hour ago it was rife with tweets that rioting had started round the corner from where i'm sitting. i was considering finishing work for the day to collect the kids early and walked round the corner to see how bad it was. one shop had been robbed - which could happen any day of the week - and apart from that the street was full of families shopping as normal. panic over - for now at least.

conculainey and PSNI are pussycats compared with riot police in some continental European countries. Then it's worse again in countries where the police have no checks at all - like Syria Sad
NOT SAYING IT'S RIGHT - JUST SAYING!!!!

And Boris is back? Well, I'm all for alleviating dire situations through the use of humour - can't wait to hear what pearls he comes out with this time Wink

AmongstWomen · 08/08/2011 15:02

'Dont we feel confident in Clegg's ability to handle things?'

ColdTruth · 08/08/2011 15:03

This generally happens when there is mass youth unemployment

Jugglingjemima · 08/08/2011 15:04

Will the Bahrain and Saudi and Kuwait governments be recalling their ambassadors?
