new thread to discuss phonehacking scandal.

OP posts:
TheRealMBJ · 20/07/2011 11:40

It does seem so. Perhaps we can swing it though, if there is a vote of no confidence in DC etc.

One can dream

merlin I think I might like you too Grin

teejwood · 20/07/2011 11:43

BMJ I fear neither Labour nor Tories are interested, esp if Labour think they might be able to get a maj government if DC is discredited - when the vote failed they were all rubbing their hands with glee Sad

teejwood · 20/07/2011 11:46

sorry MBJ Grin

TheRealMBJ · 20/07/2011 11:48

Don't worry. I don't mind being mistaken for a medical journal. Grin

teejwood · 20/07/2011 11:51

quite a robust statement from DC. EM going for a quieter tone - at least to start.

teejwood · 20/07/2011 11:52

one of the world's leading and most respected medical journals, MBJ, only the best for you!

BornSicky · 20/07/2011 11:52

the speaker voicing opinions? weird!

is cameron going to get a pounding here? looks like Eager Ed is going to go for it.

OP posts:
teejwood · 20/07/2011 12:00

I know EM is going to go after DC for party political reasons. But I'd rather he was spending as much time on the overall issue.

Opportunity to extend his lead on this missed imho...

BornSicky · 20/07/2011 12:00

oooh! resignation request? and full apology request!

OP posts:
teejwood · 20/07/2011 12:02

bornsicky he's played into DC's hands here - that was the danger with going for the party political line...

BornSicky · 20/07/2011 12:03

cameron's responding badly. throwing a temper tantrum is not good for public support.

and clegg is staring at the ceiling. think he's hoping for cameron to bog off too. it's so frustyrating that he can't reply/ give his frank opinion.

OP posts:
teejwood · 20/07/2011 12:05

i think clegg is worried that if DC goes so will the coalition.
i actually think DC has made some good points. as soon as RM said he was closest to GB, EM should have taken care to box more cleverly...

BornSicky · 20/07/2011 12:06

i disagree teej, he forced cameron into a big rant that sounded like a stroppy teenager's response to me.

OP posts:
teejwood · 20/07/2011 12:09

born he may have been ranting in tone but it was like the tone of his opening address - again imho. but some of the content has been good. I want all the parties to work together on this and party political potshots are not going to help that.

ThisIsANiceCage · 20/07/2011 12:22

The analysis on the Daily Politics is that DC is taking advantage of this to "smash" the police. Ie push through his radical plans.

Which would fit entirely with the disaster-opportunist track record of DC's government. (Banking crisis credit crunch? Restructure the NHS!)

BornSicky · 20/07/2011 12:25

i want cross party agreement, but that can't happen when the prime minister is socially up to his neck in it and professionally mired .

blaming brown et al. is all well and good, but cameron is there now, making gross mistakes now and still not acknowledging those errors or addressing them.

OP posts:
ThisIsANiceCage · 20/07/2011 12:28

Btw, there may or may not be a need for regulatory change within the police (just following their existing rules might help).

But as with potential changes to press/media regulation, there's a serious danger of doing this wrong, as everybody with a special interest tries to lever those changes to their own advantage.

We need to resist the trap of, "Something must be done, this is Something, therefore let's do it".

BornSicky · 20/07/2011 12:30

absolutely agree TIANC.

btw Watson is now saying he warned cameron months ago and never received a reply to his letter.

OP posts:
BitOfFun · 20/07/2011 12:37

Don't understand why DC is claiming to not know Andy Coulsin knew of phone hacking, when two journalists were on record as saying he did?

ThisIsANiceCage · 20/07/2011 12:41

Oh Mr Bryant MP, I think I love you. He's just asked for the Harbottle & Lewis files to be handed to the police.

Terribletriplets · 20/07/2011 14:00

I caught a few snatches of NN on the night before the HoC committee. Monday night. A journalist told that he and Sean Hoare were the only two whistleblowers. Does anyone know who it did be? It was not the one in beige. Do any of you know of notw journos who might be whistleblowers?

(tianc; still no s key, but employing me faithful match, when the place do it demand)

edam · 20/07/2011 14:09

So, NI's lawyers had tons of emails that suggested police officers had been bribed. But sat on them. Isn't that an offence in itself? Don't lawyers have a duty to disclose evidence of criminal offences if it comes to their attention? (Have vague memory that this is the case - either in law or in their professional code of conduct.)

Either H&L are in this up to their necks, or father & son are lying. Or quite possibly both. Someone should report H&L to the appropriate authorities and then we'll see whether they cry 'News International stopped us, they knew all about it'.

teejwood · 20/07/2011 14:09

right - just back on! what have i missed? hmm - didn't see politics show but i agree with everyone here that we need balance. not to use this as an excuse to make stupid changes to the police or to gag the press. we need an independent police & judiciary, press and parliament. cage was it you with the tripod comment on the first thread? couldn't agree more.
And I think Bryant has been brilliant, along with Watson. It is unacceptable that people can't defend themselves from allegations by a client, because the client has gagged them! It's not often I feel sorry for lawyers, I have to say, but I'll give them this one Wink

But I am utterly flummoxed by the whole NI and DM counter-attack of "the BBC is the real threat to democracy in the UK". What??? Do us a favour. Hasn't NI/DM lobbying emasculated and hacked (from a financial and organisational perspective) the BBC enough????????

edam · 20/07/2011 14:13

That's what Murdoch junior was saying last year, when he described the Beeb as 'state sponsored journalism' that had a 'chilling effect' and claimed the only guarantor of journalistic independence was the profit motive.

You'd think he'd keep quiet about that out of a sense of shame at the moment. The profit motive at News International clearly drove them into widespread law-breaking and cover-ups.

Nancy66 · 20/07/2011 14:14

Teejwood - re Kelvin - the Liverpool factor has been mentioned but the signing is still going ahead.

The DM outsells The Sun on Saturdays now so they're trying to cash in on that by poaching some of their more popular writers.
