A chance to escape Murdoch?s embrace
By Alastair Campbell
In 2009 I attended the wedding of News International chief executive Rebekah Brooks. The ceremony took place by a lake, at a country estate. I stood next to TV presenter Piers Morgan, while Paul Dacre, Daily Mail editor, was a few yards away. Rupert Murdoch was closer to the action. David Cameron hung back up the slope. Gordon Brown, then prime minister, arrived late, with all eyes turning to him as he walked down to the lake.

But there were more there than that. Def the Mirror.

Terribletriplets · 13/07/2011 17:16

Intentional spelling mistake. Got it from Murdock. :)

corygal · 13/07/2011 17:16

Are you a NI plant?

EvenLessNarkyPuffin · 13/07/2011 17:24

NI are scum. Yes, lots of people will lose their jobs, just as when any business closes. People aren't gloating over their misery. They're delighted that a vile company that manipulated public opinion and was so powerful that the police and sucessive governments were cowed by them now appears to be getting it's comeuppance. In this case schardenfreude rocks.

TwoIfBySea · 13/07/2011 17:28

I should be relieved I won't be working for RM, it's stressful enough tbh!

I think The Guardian had better not crow too loudly.

As for Gordon Brown, he waited long enough but I suppose this is his opportunity to get revenge for NI backing the Tories rather than Labour. There was a lot of a$$ kissing going on, not many can hold their heads up guilt free.

This is why I get my news from Private Eye!

I'd imagine Gordon was put under a lot of pressure by his own party not to open his mouth. Imagine what a shitstorm NI could have unleashed on them had it wanted to. All the dodgy expenses claims and claiming on second homes owned by family etc. Do you think they didn't know about that? All the affairs and political in fighting. If they were routinely hacking voicemail they must have had gold on most MPs. And that's above and beyond all the 'open secret in Westminster' stuff that all the political journalists know about but don't print because it's not really relevant. Remember what happened when the Tories had their 'family values' campaign in the 90s? Imagine that with full coverage on 24 hr rolling news, tell alls by 'busty' 22 year olds in the Sun and editorial pieces on the collapse of the party in The Times.

Terribletriplets · 13/07/2011 17:41

The weeding photos were on the front page of the Telegraph at the time; can't find them notw.

PurpleStrawberryGuava · 13/07/2011 18:06

Great news.

Now we just need Brooks to do the right thing. I won't hold my breath.

Swedes2 · 13/07/2011 19:03

If it's proved the hacking and corruption was systemic throughout other stables, not just NI, AND noone on the board is personally implicated/charged with criminal wrongdoing, then it's possible this deal can still be done at some point. I wouldn't be too quick to celebrate.

If his name gets cleared, perhaps Murdoch will come and sue a Mumsnet poster or two for defamation. :)

LucaBrasi · 13/07/2011 19:10

Oh, please allow me to indulge in a bit of schadenfreude

Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha !

Ah hem.....

Or perhaps, more correctly, I bask in the delight and pride that decent people can make a difference and make a stand against injustice and corruption.

I know it's just the beginning, but a good thing happened today.

Pannus · 13/07/2011 21:03

Oh no, oh no, oh please god no:

sittinginthesun · 13/07/2011 21:14

Link, Pannus?

teej · 13/07/2011 21:29

Swedes2 honestly am interested - what has been said on these threads for which MNers could be sued? Am also slightly concerned you seem to be happy that fellow mners - who by and large are ordinary people in ordinary jobs earning ordinary wages - might be sued by one of the world's richest and most powerful men...

teej · 13/07/2011 21:31

pannus am wary of clicking on those links - there has been some fairly offensive stuff written about that case. is there some sort of new proof revealed? otherwise i'd rather not feel like i have to rinse my brain out with bleach after clicking....

Pannus · 13/07/2011 21:34

Matthew Freud married to Elisabeth Murdoch

edam · 13/07/2011 21:35

Greythorne · 13/07/2011 21:42

Pannus
None of your links work...

Pannus · 13/07/2011 21:45

short excerpt from Guardian 02/09/2008 : Clarence Mitchell, Kate and Gerry McCann's spokesman, has joined PR and marketing agency Freud Communications.

Mitchell will be a consultant specialising in crisis and issues management, media training and scenario planning at the agency, which counts Pepsi and Walkers Crisps among its clients. He started work yesterday.

The former BBC journalist has secured a 12-month contract at Freud but will not stop working with the McCanns, whose five-year-old daughter Madeleine has been missing for 16 months.

Pannus · 13/07/2011 21:51

google: david payne go to second link down to joana-morais.blogspot.com

if it's all a lie I truly truly apologize and I am sorry, so so sorry. I think I'm a bit het up.

teej · 13/07/2011 21:53

Pannus Mitchell was working for the govt when he was seconded to the McCann case, then went to work with them and a few other familes of murdered children, and then went to Freud where he was still involved with the McCanns. Now obviously he has links into NI as a journo in his early career, govt comms bod and through the Freud job. Are you basically saying (because I really don't want to click links unneccessarily) that NI has the full story because of hacking/CM?
