Billy Bragg - Never Buy The Sun

Hi, I went to see Billy Bragg at Garforth Arts Festival last night where he debuted a new song he's just written.

For those of you that don't know the people of Liverpool pretty much closed the Sun down as a newspaper there after the Hillsborough disaster and the disgusting slurs they placed on the Liverpool fans. (See section 6.1 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hillsborough_disaster#The_Sun_newspaper).

If Mr Murdoch intends to quietly re-open the NOTW as the Sunday Sun he needs to know that is not an option.

I totally agree that the phone hacking of Milly Dowler was reprehensible, however i cant stand campaigns and being told what i can and cant read. I will continue to buy the sun and will continue to watch sky.

I never buy the Sun, on principle, after Hillsborough. But its still very much on sale here, so somebody must be buying it.

I like the simplicity of just saying 'The Scousers never buy The Sun' as a way of saying that actually there is some point in boycotts.

One of my brothers and several of my friends have decided to boycott The Sun and NOTW after I posted a link about the Milly Dowler hacking to my Facebook. Especially as I posted a rant alongside it using a few choice MNisms, namely "fuck off, and when you get there fuck off some more" and "ticket to the far side of fuck". Whoever made those up deserves a knighthood.

I think this song is more likely to make me buy the Sun to piss the likes of Bragg off.

It is very clear that the only way the likes of Murdoch and his cronies will ever take our disgust into consideration is if we hit them in the pocket.

As a Liverpudlian I wouldn't use the Sun to wipe my bum and never cease to be horrified that some scousers will buy it. I have cancelled the Times until I see if News International plan to learn anything from this.

To be honest, Billy annoys me. As do all those popstars/celebs that get all political. I don't know why, I'm sure he means well. It's like when they act all hardcore labour whilst enjoying their six bedroomed morgage free house that they paid for by being on top of the pops once or twice. It's hardly hard work, is it?

Billy Bragg works a lot harder than just going on TOTP- iirc he was a bit shit when he went on it actually, and never got invited back after forgetting his words . He does a lot of live work, writes his own songs and has done loads of benefit gigs for strikers and families facing deportation etc. etc. He is generous with his time and talents for anti-racist and gay rights campaigns, and manages to do it mostly modestly and without fanfare, unlike that wanker Bonio. I think he's a pretty decent sort.
