apparently by deleting Milly's messages her family still had some hope that she might still be alive

I am from Islington but was forced out by all those rich people

HeIsSpartacus · 09/07/2011 09:17

Ooh Dan Wootton and Caitlin Moran on Twitter... he's telling her she should have been loyal to NoTW as a writer for The Times and walk out on her £250k salary in solidarity! There's been a bit of a spat. Agree with poster above as to how self-obsessed he came across in his interview outside NI in Wapping.

Anyone know how BT Vision users can ask to have their Sky news channels cut out? All comes as part of your basic monthly subscription. Have cancelled The Sunday Times sub.

wigglesrock · 09/07/2011 09:23

Me, me MrsDeVere, I would even be willing to let my 6 year old have her ears pierced so I could prove how chavvy I am Grin

LadyBeagleEyes · 09/07/2011 09:25

Me, me me too Mrs. D.
We can have a demo of common mumsnetters outside the Times head office.
I'll have a fag in my hand, but what should I wear?

ponders wardrobe to find the most common looking combos>
Oh, and we can all have a Macdonalds in our hands and eat them outside!!!

OhYouBadBadCrookshanks · 09/07/2011 09:27

I think those blaming the fall of NOTW on MN are very out of touch. There are very few news stories that I hear being discussed out and about. Yesterday it was the topic of conversation in town (and I don't think the old lady who bent my ear about it as I was standing in front of the newspaper stand was from Islington either)

lovecat · 09/07/2011 09:32

I think you should all wear pj's and fake uggs and go via Tesco...:o

Seriously, what is Roger Alton on? Most people I know (across a v. wide spectrum) have never heard of MN (or else think it's Netmums) and they are all disgusted with NI for the transparent attempt to distract from the main issue by sacking 200-odd largely 'innocent' (sorry, but some of them wrote those headlines and dug that dirt even recently) people.

I quite like the idea of being a pterodactyl....

GentleOtter · 09/07/2011 09:33

A lifetime supply of Greggs sausage rolls (cheese and onion for the vegetarians) to the MN who performs a citizen's arrest on Rupert Murdoch when he arrives in London today.

OhYouBadBadCrookshanks · 09/07/2011 09:37

we've made the australian news Hmm

To any lurking journos - Mumsnet is not a corporate body with one voice that we all sign up to. We are thousands of individuals, each with our own thoughts and opinions. The fact that we agree with each other on this issue only demonstrates how abhorrent the actions that some people have taken in the NOTW (and other Papers) are. It takes something truly vile to unite us so strongly as this has done.

ellisbell · 09/07/2011 09:49

if mumsnet is as powerful as was being claimed then it would be a bit silly to antagonise its members further and risk being next on the list.

I was pretty angry when I heard about NOTW and came here because I knew I'd find useful advice on what I, as a non NOTW reader, could do to express that anger. Mumsnet didn't make me angry but it did provide the tools to show that anger. I'm pleased that women still have ethics and are learning how to use their power as purchasers to stand up for them. Decent men support that, the unethical don't.

What these stupid people just don't get is that there is still a strong sense of decency and fair play in the British people and that there are limits on how scummy those in power can be before they get a revolt. They don't like their power being threatened because they believe having money gives them the right to do anything they want.

GeorgeEliot · 09/07/2011 10:04

I haven't read the whole thread so I'm sure others have already made these points -
Utter nonsense to blame a social media campaign for the closure of the NOTW. The campaign was just a way for people to vent their extreme anger at the situation.
And the NOTW closure could have been avoided if Rebekah Brooks had done the decent thing and resigned at the outset.
In all the media storm surrounding this I haven't seen one single piece of comment supporting her position.

thefirstMrsDeVere · 09/07/2011 10:05

Seriously it pissess me off all this sterotyping of MN.
Not only is it insulting to those of you who are MC and/or affluent or whatever (whats wring with that anyway?)

but it assumes that those of us who are not mc or highly educated are too stupid and selfish to care what goes on in the world (or indeed the News of the World - see what I did there?)

Its all mysogeny anyhoo.

So they can kiss my working class arse

Mwah.

"A lifetime supply of Greggs sausage rolls (cheese and onion for the vegetarians) to the MN who performs a citizen's arrest on Rupert Murdoch when he arrives in London today."

Oh Justine, you simply must

crazynanna · 09/07/2011 10:23

I'll take him out for that Custardo.Wink

Tortington · 09/07/2011 10:26

Pterodactyls

working class people can't spell Pterodactyls

Tortington · 09/07/2011 10:27

i have an uber smugness that i don't buy newspapers or watch the telly.

don't quiz me on my nestle purchases though

Tortington · 09/07/2011 10:30

has this thread been iven special permission to go over a thousand?

anyway, i just watched QT, and i am a little in love with hugh grant too - i wouldn't shag him with a terrodac...pterrodac....perrotac..pterodoc....a dinosaurs flange, but his outspokeness and sheer gutsyness was amarzing

thefirstMrsDeVere · 09/07/2011 10:31

Dammit I can spell 'nest of vipers'. Peradactoles is going to take me fecking ages to master.

TanteRosmerta · 09/07/2011 10:33

for those who didn't watch NN last night - its not Justine's bit, still searching for that, but its Steve Coogan and Greg Dyke, laying into Paul MacCullen

Pagwatch · 09/07/2011 10:36

Newsnight was marvellous.

I know the debate points were scored elsewhere but Coogan barely managing to resist climbing across the set and lumping feral, ratty, beige journo was just brilliant.

Coogan was right as well. The scandal merchants have spent decades pretending that their ability to challenge the powerful is their raison d'être when 90% of the time they just want to catch some body well known fucking someone that they think they shouldn't.

TanteRosmerta · 09/07/2011 10:42

I literally gasped when MacCullen said that what he does as a "journalist" was just a bit of fun and he kind of smirked Shock really shocking...I don't know how Coogan managed to restrain himself, either, Pag

LadyBeagleEyes · 09/07/2011 10:59

So, is this just the start of the revolution against Rupert Murdoch or will it all fizzle out?
I've wondered for years why he has been allowed the power he has, and I hope this is the straw that broke the camel's back.
The fact that he has had the power to choose which government to back, and succeed is the most fucking scary thing in our so called democracy.
And that goes for Blair too (though I was one of these people on that May morning that thought things can only get better)'
David Cameron is ten times worse though, he fucking Hired Andy Coulson and is best friends with RB, this is no longer a story about NOTW, and maybe if Mumsnet is so all powerful as Roger Alton says we are we can carry this on, until something is done.

GentleOtter · 09/07/2011 11:04

I think that as the months progress (and the mass of evidence which will be gathered for a trial) will unearth issues which will fuel the flames and keep things fresh in people's minds.

I don't think this will fizzle out as it has affected too many people too personally.

WynkenBlynkenandNod · 09/07/2011 11:20

DH has pointed out whilst explaining it all to DD, that what we are seeing is Cameron's Big Society, just not in the way he envisaged it.

Really hope this doesn't fizzle out, reading the words Milly Dowler just makes me feel enraged every time I read them and I hope this keeps going. Appreciate there is a point where you potentially throw the baby out with the bath water by over regulating the Press. That's why it's so important to do this properly, however long it takes and hope people will keep reacting until it is sorted properly, whatever that takes in reality.
