Ooer the 63 yr old arrested is prob one of the lot listed in tonight's Eve Standard page 3 under headline Coulson and His Inner Circle: Stuart Kuttner; Neil Wallis; Ian Edmonson; Greg Miskiw: Neville Thurlbeck; Alex Marunchak...but what would I know? Only what I read in the papers.

gilbertta · 09/07/2011 00:22

@get Orf - I live v near that dim small town! When off to Brum joked about 'voting down Coalition'; was asked 'why would you want to?' by local opinion former....

Actually rather enjoying it, though. Party is more democratic than Labour, so Clegg has more pressure on him than e.g. Blair, who could rely on unions for Conference backing. Clegg has to do what we (2000 conference reps) say, to much greater extent. Otherwise we will replace him with Tim Farron (we have voted him party president on same electorate).

The 'they' of which you speak is merely those who think of themselves as the 'sensible leadership' - right wing, public school, economic-liberal millionaire ministers. But they WILL bow to us 'Social Liberals' eventually! We outnumber them, and we ain't tearing up our membership cards after 30 years, no matter how much they'd like us to do so. :)

GetOrfMoiLand · 09/07/2011 00:29

I think my view has been formed of having lived for 28 years in a small town west country area which was a libdem stronghold - and seeing at first hand how pernicious and small minded libdems can be when they have power.

I really hope that the 'liberal' element of the libdems will end up dominating, however I think the small minded toryism of the party is more dominant at the moment, and that is what Clegg is courting.

Let's face it, Clegg has no ideology, he is an opportunist.

gilbertta · 09/07/2011 00:40

Of course it depends what you mean by 'liberal'. There are the economic liberals - 'freedom', private sector is best, anti state - they fit in nicely with the Tories. And the social liberals (socialliberal.net) - the way the term liberal is (often perjoratively) used in the States - that for . The former scored a victory when they got rid of Charles Kennedy and later put in Clegg-the-rich-bankers-son. But the latter have been winning all the internal party elections since, so former are on borrowed time. Hopefully...

We seem to have wandered from point of this thread, but everyone else has gone to bed....

Bravo Renault. First major advertiser to boycott ALL Murdoch papers!

MyBrainIsOutOfTune · 09/07/2011 01:41

Am late to the party, but have just sent off an email to cancel my Times Online subscription. I told them that if I hadn't already decided to boycott NI, Roger Alton's rant against Mumsnet would have made up my mindWink

I was reading an article in the Times, 'Victory for mother of all internet campaigns', while also digging through this thread, and I was shocked by the one and only comment, because it lay the blame on Mumsnet. 'How is it even possible,' I thought, and then I came further down this thread and realised that not only random, anonymous posters on Times Online think like this. How their minds work, I don't know.

I actually think the comment needs to be cited in full, because it contains some nice imagery:

'Mumsnet are a bunch of self-serving, uppermiddle class, North London Guardian reading, champagne socialists. They swoop like Pterodactyls, bullying any holder of an opinion that diverges from their own, even on their own forums. Thanks to these rich Islington housewives hundreds of innocent people are now out of work.

Mumsnet revolt me'

You evil Pterodactyls youGrin

lullabybaby · 09/07/2011 06:38

I think the slogan, used on the top of this page, to describe Mumsnet Talk should be reconsidered:

"The country's most popular meeting point for parents" The Times

Does Mumsnet need approval from News International?

Hassled · 09/07/2011 06:44

I don't think I've ever been compared to a Pterodactyl before. But as extinct flying reptiles go, I reckon the Pterodactyls were the best.

He really has missed the point, hasn't he? It's not just the chattering classes who are upset by NI's behaviour - if they're trying to make it into some sort of middle-class Guardianista conspiracy then I despair, because it's so much bigger than that.

headfairy · 09/07/2011 07:28

my brain ah the first resort of the lazy defensive idiot, blame Mumsnet. All we happen to be is a collection of people with an opinion. The fact that just about every one of the 1400 posts on here express disgust at what they've done is most telling, especially when most times we can't even agree whether breast is best or not.

I can't imagine for one moment the most powerful media magnate in the world gives one jot what we think. Closing the notw was always part of the plan, it just happened a bit earlier than plannned.

Shall we start our next campaign.... Get Caitlin Moran to move to the Guardian Grin?

Ummm, excuse me being simplistic here (I'm only a mother after all) but surely this storm has very little to do with MN, and A LOT to do with an extensive police investigation and the fact that social media have given their readership an unedited, uncensored voice, a voice which is saying "no, thanks, a good story was not worth doing that"

Oh dear, NI really have lost the plot now!

Dianella · 09/07/2011 07:54

I hear this morning that thousands of documents and archive records may have been destroyed at NI. Is anyone even mildly surprised by this? They've had several years to prepare for this and have no doubt been shredding and wiping so there'll be "no evidence" yet again.

franke · 09/07/2011 07:59

Daniella, I agree. I also found the footage of policemen solemnly removing a computer from AC's house yesterday a bit ridiculous - like they'll find anything incriminating on it other than his Asda home delivery confirmations and endless games of Bejewelled Blitz.

franke · 09/07/2011 08:03

Dianella, sorry.

SeaShellsAndTheInlawInvasion · 09/07/2011 08:03

I'd be amazed if anyone gets prosecuted this time-they will have learnt not to leave a paper trail after the 2006/7 trials. The only punished that an possibly be dealt out to NI that they will understand is financial, in the form of boycotts and withdrawal of advertising long term.

IvyAndGold · 09/07/2011 08:14

well if Rodge the Nob is right - which he must be since he has a cock - then clearly Mumsnet has TOO MUCH POWER and TOO MUCH INFLUENCE and should be investigated immediately.

I can almost hear the thousands of incriminating emails being hastily deleted as I type.

My organic shortbread failed to sustain me enough to stay awake and watch Newsnight but very glad to hear it went well for Justine.

Roger Alton truly has failed to notice that this is the week that the British Public as a whole properly woke up to what had been going on amongst Press, Politicians and Police and worked out how actually the Internet is a powerful tool that can disseminate info in seconds and that this week will be one of those studied by the historians in the future.

If he really has managed to miss what has happened, thinks it is just MN then I'd suggest that he's not in touch enough with reality to be in his current job and should be a little concerned seeing as his boss is due to arrive.

Anyway, need a cup of Fairtrade tea to wake up properly.

Shall I volunteer to appear for a few minutes on a national tv show in order to lay the 'organic, middleclass, affluent, etc mumnetter' myth to rest once and for all?

Today would be a good time because I have just had a spray tan.

Doesnt have to be just me - a delegation of common chavvy MNers could stand outside the NI offices or sumfing.

I will even bring my collection of brahn kidz
