apparently by deleting Milly's messages her family still had some hope that she might still be alive

Ha ha, yes this is absolutely the Big Society. And news flash to Dave: we don't work for you, we work for us.

And by the way, so do you.

yellabelly · 09/07/2011 11:35

yes they were. But there are decent columnists at the Murdoch papers who should now leave.

MyBrainIsOutOfTune · 09/07/2011 11:36

In my answer from Times Online:

'Everyone at News International was appalled and shocked when we heard about the allegations that have been made against The News of the World and we are doing all we can, in cooperation with the Police, to establish the full facts behind the claims.

We intend to pursue the facts with vigour and integrity and if the allegations are proved to be true we will do our utmost to see that justice is done and those culpable are punished.'

That sounds nice. Lets hope they don't alienate more nests of vipers Pterodactyls communities during their pursuit.

MyBrainIsOutOfTune · 09/07/2011 11:36

crap that striking out thing went totally wrong

AitchTwoOh · 09/07/2011 11:37

hahah yes we were talking about that Big Society thing this morning as well, don't think he expected society to bite back.
did anyone see the table on NN last night, with the papers that were using PIs. notw came fifth, the mail first, by quite a margin. it's great that all this is being looked at properly now, and dacre et al will be stopped, but i do wonder how far inquiries will go? depends on the judges, i suppose.

(although if the notw office will be a crime scene as of going to final press, as is being reported on twitter, one wonders why it isn't right now, iykwim?)

AitchTwoOh · 09/07/2011 11:43

this thing about decent journos leaving is a bit bogus tbh. the wages someone like caitlin moran is getting, probably a quarter of a million, would require so many other people being put out of work to get her. it's about five really-good-contract Guardian journos' worth, for example, and in fact it's about twenty freelances' (which is the way that newspapers are staffed nowadays) worth. would they find the money to facilitate such a major defection? i think so. would they be right to do so? absolutely not, or at least i bloody hope not.

Terribletriplets · 09/07/2011 11:44

According ex-NotWjournalist on twitter, there will be a blog as soon as the paper goes to press, tonight, written by ex NotW jounalists and friends.

thefirstMrsDeVere · 09/07/2011 11:46

mybrain I think the underlining was quite effective - sort of threatening in a middle class, affluent, Islington sort of way Grin

Pagwatch · 09/07/2011 11:48

One thing that has occurred to me that I haven't heard talked about elsewhere (although I may have missed it) is money.

The references have been to 6000 people having their messages hacked.

Sienna miller was given £100,000 in damages.
Max Clifford was given more than that.

If Milly Dowler parents sue can you imagine what their award would be?

This could be mighty expensive for news international. I doubt they can severe liability by cutting off the NotW and any insurances would be invalidated by illegality being at the heart of the claims.

I know they are rich but that could be expensive.

Terribletriplets · 09/07/2011 11:55

I think they have set aside £120 million, but 6000 cases \\\\\\\\\\than that.\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

Aitch Yes, I guess you're right. Sigh. And it is of course very easy for me to take a moral stand, because all I had to do, was to cancel my newspaper. I didn't have to find a new job, with mortgage and food bills hanging over my head. I suppose most of the people working at NI have made their peace with that when they started working there. I vaguely remember Caitlin Moran saying something about that a long time ago.

I'm not on Twitter, so haven't seen what any of the Times journos are saying about this, does anyone know?

NormanTebbit · 09/07/2011 12:41

I think Justine and mumsnet are probably experiencing just a taste of what MPs were fearful of when avoiding tackling NI.

Roger Alton is basically trying to devalue Mumsnet as a coffee house for bored middle class mums (although there is some truth in that) and reduce any (limited) influence it may have.

It must be rather unsettling to suddenly be on Newsnight and come to attention of NI. I suspect Mumsnet may be subject to quite a bit of criticism from NI titles in the future because it is an easy target witho.ut huge amounts of lovely ad spend.

CrapolaDeVille · 09/07/2011 12:46

Solidarity then. Tweet good things.

"I suspect Mumsnet may be subject to quite a bit of criticism from NI titles in the future because it is an easy target witho.ut huge amounts of lovely ad spend"

It's guaranteed isn't it. They'll try and distract people from the real issues

LadyBeagleEyes · 09/07/2011 13:26

I'm hoping that the publicity, Justine's swift reaction re the sky advertising and Roger Alton's reaction will bring people on to this website and make people realise that we're not just a group of middle class mums, we are all sorts of people from all sorts of backgrounds.
I joined Mumsnet out of curiousity after watching Mathew Wright slagging us off. I'm still on MN, I very rarely watch the Wright Stuff any more.
I expect any mostly female website will be treated like just a bunch of silly wimmim, the more we get criticised, the stronger we get.
Fuck, we are the suffragettes of the internet.

NormanTebbit · 09/07/2011 13:53

this is worth a read

freybean · 09/07/2011 14:04

bloody hell, just read that link

funnyperson · 09/07/2011 14:05

Its strange this whole thing, born of an age of technology, its almost as if Julian Assange and Andy Coulsen were two poles of the same magnetic bar. They are opposing poles but I think it is the same bar.
An overhaul of the paparazzi's executive: the Murdoch empire- the whole press culture which treats other peoples lives like public property- hacking and photographing and hounding with complete lack of empathy because the newspaper makers give permission, demand it, suck greedily at the fruits of it.
It is the news editors and executive who have fuelled this. And , as perhaps is now clear, those who advertise in such papers, Not the people.

Incidentally I think Caitlin Moran is overpaid. What has Caitlin Moran got to do with all this anyway? Why is her name cropping up?What have I missed.

I read notw once. As a ten year old for a class project comparing newspapers. In those days it was astoundingly lacking in news. A revelation. I haven't read it since.
Sounds awful but I might buy a copy tomorrow. I am so glad it is going and hope that there may be an end to the whole unscrupulous rat pack.

LadyBeagleEyes · 09/07/2011 14:06

It's been going on under our noses for years, Norman, I know I've sat and read a paper about NI takeover bids and thought, how the fuck is he getting away with it.
How nothing has been said or done by now makes me think how much corruption is there?
This whole debate has to continue, until the general public know everything.
I'm getting Angry and I'm usually the most mild mannered person you'd ever meet.

SeaShellsAndTheInlawInvasion · 09/07/2011 14:09

Superb

SeaShellsAndTheInlawInvasion · 09/07/2011 14:21

Normantebbit: "Roger Alton is basically trying to devalue Mumsnet as a coffee house for bored middle class mums (although there is some truth in that) and reduce any (limited) influence it may have."

He is scared. He can't control the Internet; those pesky proles have a voice.

hammybobs · 09/07/2011 14:24

article on the deletion of emails

Above goes into detail about what's going on re the 'shredding' of evidence. Interesting that the company who were storing emails etc. tried to persuade NI to 'fess up. Also interesting about the reach of US authorities, and what might happen if the police bribing results in convictions. I don't think there's any doubt Murdoch's empire is beginning to crumble bit by bit. Oh, to hope they can retrieve the millions of emails that have disappeared. Is that too much to hope? Any techies able to comment on the likelihood of those missing emails being recovered?

The plot thickens further...

TanteRosmerta · 09/07/2011 14:27

Norman thanks for that article - fierce journalism, great stuff...

"David Cameron has repeatedly displayed an inability to make a distinction between right and wrong. The press ought to have stepped into the breach. Unfortunately, we in Fleet Street have forgotten that the ultimate vindication of journalism is not to intrude into, and destroy, private lives. Nor is it the dance around power, money and social status. It is the fight for truth and decency."

BrianAndHisBalls · 09/07/2011 14:37

So could the whole thing fall? The whole News International group I mean. I know we all thought Arthur Andersen would never fall but it did...
