apparently by deleting Milly's messages her family still had some hope that she might still be alive

Ponders · 08/07/2011 21:05

he mentioned an anti-NotW-advertisers MN campaign on twitter but there wasn't one, was there? we just banged on about it a bit on here afaik?

does he really not think NI have rather more responsibility for closing their own paper - which they were about to close anyway Hmm - or, like so many media people, does he just think people will believe whatever he says?

tosser

BornSicky · 08/07/2011 21:05

TIANC I'm spitting my organic shortbread crumbs everywhere!

[proudemoticon] never brought down a newspaper before. once stopped a bus from mowing down a pensioner on the euston road, but never, ever felt quite so fab as to have the editor of the times spitting his chips. Grin

TheCrackFox · 08/07/2011 21:06

I would like to see Rupert Murdoch taken in for questioning because I refuse to believe that he didn't know what was going on.

travellingwilbury · 08/07/2011 21:07

9 out of 10 cats are being very funny about it Grin

Just saying .

catinthehat2 · 08/07/2011 21:08

I just looked at 80schick's link

Lololol

The guy looked deranged!!!!!

ZZZenAgain · 08/07/2011 21:12

he was spitting feathers, wasn't he? OK to have a viewpoint and feel strongly about it IMO, but why not be a bit clever and make it funny, would have been much sharper and got his point across far better IMO

Thought he just made the Times look bad and himself a bit unhinged or as I said before drunk.

ziptoes · 08/07/2011 21:15

Rather badly informed for a newsman wasn't he? doesn't give you much confidence in his fact checking!

What a complete fruitloop

soodonim · 08/07/2011 21:20

more updates here www.telegraph...cking-live.html

18.10 So to recap, the key points from Rebekah Brooks' address:
? She warns staff she has "visibility" of worse revelations relating to criminal activity to come, said of the decision to close the News of the World: "In a year you will understand why we made this decision".
? She will not resign, but James Murdoch has stripped her of her role leading News International's internal investigation into phone hacking. This passes to Joel Klein, newly appointed News Corp independent director, in New York.
? She promises staff a "quick" decision over the introduction of a seven-day Sun newspaper but says there will not be a new distinct Sunday title - they are "not going to print the News of the World under a different masthead".

mrsdonkeybucket · 08/07/2011 21:30

Cannot believe comments as far as "it's yummy mummies fault the NOTW was closed".

Why don't people realise just how disgusted 'we' the public, are by what has been done ?

And I am so insulted. I have never bought organic shortbread in my life.

I make my own. Wink

Cheeky beggar.

mrsdonkeybucket · 08/07/2011 21:32

The only reason they wont print the NOTW on a different masthead is because they wont be allowed to, and as they clearly wont be able to do any more hacking, they will have limited resources for stories !

ZZZenAgain · 08/07/2011 21:32

I know, who doesn't make their own shortbread.

Do you think we should send him some camomile tea?

Jajaswolefwoman · 08/07/2011 21:33

How can someone in the media get it so utterly wrong!! I can't believe that I saw what I saw but clearly did given everyone else's comments.

GrimmaTheNome · 08/07/2011 21:34

they are "not going to print the News of the World under a different masthead".

really?Hmm

I do hope the advertisers wait and see if that's true...

mrsdonkeybucket · 08/07/2011 21:35

He works for NI.

Someone's got to try to defend them I guess ?

Boycott The Times ! Boycott The Sunday Times !

(I am serious, btw.)

mrsdonkeybucket · 08/07/2011 21:36

Zzen Only way I would send that twat tea is if it was ensured it would choke him. Grin

Ponders · 08/07/2011 21:38

'It is with great regret that we write to inform you that after 168 years we will publish the final edition of the News of the World this Sunday.
You will know that the paper has a proud history of fighting crime, exposing wrong-doing and regularly setting the news agenda for the nation.'

Blimey - it's superman's paper!

Conchita · 08/07/2011 21:38

it's true that people power has brought the paper down (tho can't say I noticed a massive campaign on mn), because the obvious revulsion turned the brand toxic, and advertisers HATE a toxic brand (all hypocrisy of course, they just don't want to be tainted). However nobody forced NI to close the NOTW and get rid of 200 people. That wasn't the intention of the twitter campaigners, even tho the less thoughtful among them are crowing over the job losses. Makes me sick that staff who had nothing to do with this (and if you can't muster a bit of sympathy for a young journo, consider the subs, designers etc) are swept away at the stroke of a pen while the real villains hang on. effectively they've turned it into a headcount-reducing enterprise. Murdoch wins again. I do hope he sleeps fitfully.

headfairy · 08/07/2011 21:43

conchita Murdoch was going to shut NoTW down anyway, he's just done it a little earlier than planned. It was going to be part of the move towards a greater online presence... doesn't work to have two differently named newspapers online.

OP posts:
GrimmaTheNome · 08/07/2011 21:44

I think its fairly clear that Murdoch was planning to streamline NotW and the Sun anyway. The shit probably quite likes the idea of having someone to scapegoat for the jobs he has decided to axe. Hopefully everyone can see past that one?

EightiesChick · 08/07/2011 21:49

Justine and all at MNHQ, make sure you change all your passwords and put a new PIN on your voicemail...

GrimmaTheNome · 08/07/2011 21:49

Has anything been heard on the subject from any of the Times/Sunday Times writers? Many of whom have other hats which they will presumably still want to be able to wear with some credibility left.

Libby Purves? India Knight? Caitlin Moran? Matthew Parris? ... there's more, obv - has anyone heard a peep out of them yet? (I don't follow twitter where I guess some may air their views)

Ponders · 08/07/2011 21:52

Matthew Parris was on Any Questions this evening so prob hasn't seen it yet

but I imagine most smart Times journos will be keeping their heads down whatever their true feelings Hmm

EightiesChick · 08/07/2011 21:54

Potential Times headlines for tomorrow:

Mumsnet Seen Lurking Behind Grassy Knoll in Dallas, 1963

Mumsnet Revealed as Source for Iraq War Dossier

Mumsnet Responsible for World Cup Bid Failure

changeforthebetter · 08/07/2011 21:54

C'mon MN - we should be ashamed of ourselves - silly little mummies causing people to lose their jobs .................. Hmm

Who was that prick from the Times and just how much had he drunk/smoked?? Actually quite amusing that they ran it. Just how much of a prick did he look. Love I love MN an' all but it really isn't the agent of social change. It's some intelligent, ballsy women with opinions. Deal with it, man!

God, I love that he thought MN was to blame. I mean really GrinGrinGrin

Jajaswolefwoman · 08/07/2011 21:56

Roger Alton editor - I've been ranting about him since 8pm
