apparently by deleting Milly's messages her family still had some hope that she might still be alive

"And don't for one minute think that MPs have never requested that rival politicians phones be hacked"

I think that's going badly off the point tbh. You have no proof, only suspicion and prejudice. Whereas, in the case of the newpapers, what we appear to be looking at is wholesale privacy violations on an industrial scale. So much the norm that no-one thought twice to question the legitimacy, let alone the morality, of what they were doing. As a reading public we've been fairly blase about celebrity complaints of phone-hacking. It's taken the realisation that no-one is safe from intrustion - not even the dead - to make us see sense.

aliceliddell · 05/07/2011 12:05

It would be great if we could rely on that nest of thieving lying bastards Parliament to deal with this, but Rhubarb is right. We need to be like Liverpool and The Sun over Hillsborough, they still can't sell The Sun in Lpool

TheRhubarb · 05/07/2011 12:08

The point is that I don't think it is confined solely to the media. I think it's much more widespread than we think.

My other point was that because politicians are so mixed up in it, Coulson being a crony of Cameron's and Murdoch a huge party donator, that we aren't likely to see this brought to court or those truly responsible, i.e. those at the top, punished.

Tee2072 · 05/07/2011 12:13

I am absolutely sick about this.

Guardian article about what you can do about it.

Don't see that posted anywhere on the thread. Apologies if I missed it.

HedleyLamarr · 05/07/2011 12:15

These people are utter cunts. Sorry for using that word, but it is the only one strong enough to convey my contempt for News Intl. I don't buy any Murdoch publications, nor do I have Sky. I do have Freesat which suits me fine as I get the channels I want to watch and Murdoch doesn't get a penny. It would be interesting to see if Sky subscriptions go down after this.

SpringHeeledJack · 05/07/2011 12:16

I've already said this upthread, but if you're pissed off about the way Murdoch behaves you might want to sign this to try and stop him gaining control of another chunk of the british media

do it quick, though- there's only a couple more days

TheRhubarb · 05/07/2011 12:18

Hedley, you know what? I doubt that very much.

Because whilst people may think it's rotten what has happened, it won't have personally affected them. Liverpool was different because every person there felt personally offended and the city has a great deal of pride. But no-one personally knows the Dowler family so they'll just carry on with their lives because boycotting a company, esp one as big as Sky, takes far too much effort.

It's a selfish world getting worse by the minute.

CogitoErgoSometimes · 05/07/2011 12:21

I disagree that this won't make court. There must be people within the news organisations that know what's going on and have never felt good about it. One of them will blow the whistle now that it's been shown not to be confined to trivial celebrity gossip. The book-deal will be lucrative. Either that or Murdoch will send a few key people to the sacrificial altar because he still needs the merger to go through.

mrjellykeepskidsquiet · 05/07/2011 12:22

It's a new low to be sure....boycott this rag asap

helpmenow · 05/07/2011 12:23

I desperately hope that this is the straw that breaks the camel's back for News Corp.

I have often been judged as quaint for boycotting the Murdoch Press, but maybe the Sun's Hillsborough coverage, Wapping, Rupert's megalomania and now this, will bring them down

sherbetpips · 05/07/2011 12:29

very shocked at this however NOTW journalists have uncovered some of the major stories of the last few years - there ethics are crap but they have done good work (for an utterly crap newspaper).

Ormirian · 05/07/2011 12:30

News International is a totally vile organisation.

but that isn't news really is it?

Terribletriplets · 05/07/2011 12:34

(thanks, rhubarb0)

Terribletriplets · 05/07/2011 12:39

By deleting her messages, they gave the police the impression that she had run away. Was that perverting the course of justice?

paddypoopants · 05/07/2011 12:45

This in The Guardian

'However, John Whittingdale, the chairman of the culture, media and sport select committee, told BBC Radio 4's Today programme that phone hacking at the News of the World should not taint the rest of Rupert Murdoch's empire.

"You cannot necessarily condemn the entire of News Corp just because of the actions of some individuals in another part of the organisation," he said.'

Tories are obviously not keen on any action then despite Camerons moral outrage. Mind you he wasn't that morally outraged before when he employed Coulson and didn't he have a private dinner with Rebekah Brooks and Rupert Murdoch before Christmas.

It is just so abhorent what they have done I can't quite believe it.

Ormirian · 05/07/2011 12:47

""You cannot necessarily condemn the entire of News Corp just because of the actions of some individuals in another part of the organisation," he said.' "

No, of course not.

There are plenty of other reasons to condemn the rest of the organisation.

LizaTarbucksAuntie · 05/07/2011 12:49

It is just abominable that these things can happen, but not just that the paper would choose to do this, they wouldn't do it if they did not percieve a market. They are not just feeding all of us this stuff and perverting us with it. we accept it and therefore it sells.

I do hope that this will bring about change, but I doubt it.

I'm off to read some more Ben Elton books.

PurpleStrawberry · 05/07/2011 12:50

We cancelled Sky once the whole takeover thing first started being talked about.

If we hadn't already done so, we would now be cancelling Sky on the back of this.

Likesshinythings · 05/07/2011 12:55

If the BBC were found to be doing something like this, then the director general would be the one to take the bullet, as he is editor in chief. Surely that should go for Murdoch as well?

TheRhubarb · 05/07/2011 12:55

I do believe that is perverting the course of justice as it is sending the investigation astray. It is also illegal to hack into other people's phones, esp deleting their messages for them.

Terribletriplets · 05/07/2011 12:56

I have had the experience of a journalist (don't know which paper; didn't ask) literally sticking her foot in my front door, so that I couldn't shut the door without hurting her foot. I suppose that this is the internet/mobile phone version of this. She was begging (BEGGING) me to talk to her, saying that she needed to do it for her job. We kept the curtains closed for about a fortnight (terraced house).

Why is Murdoch so protective of Rebekah? Why did he not throw her to the wolves? What is that about?

tranquilgardens · 05/07/2011 12:57

That family have been through enough already, disgusting NOTW!

SunshineAndBlueSkies · 05/07/2011 12:58

Someone should produce bumper stickers or badges saying Boycott NI. I would get one. Funds to a relevant charity.

flippinada · 05/07/2011 12:58

I have long boycotted the News International stable (Sun, NOTW, Times, SundayTimes and Sky).

Maybe more people will do it now. I bloody hope so.

This is just hideous, and I bet it's just the tip of the iceberg too.

I won't write what I think of the people involved in this as there just aren't words strong enough.

Terribletriplets · 05/07/2011 12:59

@sunshine; I would get one too.
