apparently by deleting Milly's messages her family still had some hope that she might still be alive

"re-branding" is absolutely right.

aliceliddell · 07/07/2011 17:09

Well, now they're unemployed scum. Ha! ha! and, hmm, what was that other thing? Oh, yes - HA!!

teej · 07/07/2011 17:10

mrsdonkey it's not just DC - albeit as evidenced in that telegraph piece he is VERY closely tied with them. every PM since thatcher has been in RM's pocket. one of the things that dismayed me most was TB's rush to cuddle up to RM in 1997.
but frankly that is just another example of how far removed our political class are from the needs and wants of the people.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/07/2011 17:13

Absolutely Grimma, the boycott campaign needs to expand.

They think the public are idiots, we need to show them that we are not.

TalkinPeace2 · 07/07/2011 17:13

Watch for the Sunday Sun on the news stand within the month

The name will change
the staff and attitudes will not until Rebekah is in prison where she belongs.

teej · 07/07/2011 17:16

Talkin RB is the least of it. NI has done this for so long because they could get away with it. Closing NOTW, even jailing RB, won't change that. only a dismantling of NI's power base will change things.

headfairy · 07/07/2011 17:16

The thing about Rebekah Brookes is that she is number 2 to James Murdoch... if she's culpable then so is daddy's little boy. RM won't let that happen.

mrsdonkeybucket · 07/07/2011 17:17

Oh, I completely agree, teej

Born with a silver spoon in mouth and up arse it would appear !

I am disappointed that the NOTW is to close, like others are saying, it gives RM the perfect opportunity to say "we know what happened is deplorable, disgusting, but we closed it down the moment we found out about it and realised the strength of public opinion"......blah blah blah

I am still mightily angry that we have a govt. that we didn't vote for, and the fact that they are embroiled in this up to their necks is awful. I am aware that all former govts. have also been, but we have to deal with our present one, unfortunately.

We have the opportunity to make huge changes to the way things are done, and now I am afraid that it will all go quiet, and nothing changes.

Brings a whole new meaning to DC's 'Big Society' and his catchphrase

"We're all in this together"

doesn't it ? Wink

BerryLellow · 07/07/2011 17:20

Should MN extend this thread as it nears maximum posts?

TalkinPeace2 · 07/07/2011 17:22

Nah,
Just give the topic its own board
Grin

Pannus · 07/07/2011 17:22

Rebecca and James Murdoch fighting to stay out of Old Bailey Court number one. Rupert ensuring he saves the Newscorp/bskyb takeover. Sun journos to make a new paper the Sun on Sunday....

NormanTebbit · 07/07/2011 17:22

I don't think it's brilliant news. Mainly because the management are sitting pretty while hundreds of innocent staff and more freelancers are out of a job. It's actually shit.

And RM will still get to take over BSkyB because everyone on the internet will have forgotten about it after they have taken their summer holiday.

Sorry but I think this news is utterly depressing.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/07/2011 17:23

We musnt turn it into a witch hunt of individuals, clearly the whole set up is utterly corrupt. If one or two people are hung out to dry then it could divert attention from having the whole whole corrupt lot taken apart.

RossettiConfetti · 07/07/2011 17:25

Don't forget it's not just Rebecca Brooks who is the guilty party. She's one of a few. Andy Coulson is not being name-checked so much, yet he was editor during the majority of the phone hacking scandals. And Brooks, Coulson and any other NOTW and The Sun editors were acting on Murdoch (both Rupert and James)'s express requests - they not only sanctioned the methods of getting stories, but pushed them.
If Brooks should to go to prison, the guys should as well.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/07/2011 17:26

Do you reckon we should have a proper protest?

RossettiConfetti · 07/07/2011 17:26

Have you seen that NOTW is offering free advertising space to any charities who want to publish their good works to their 'readership of millions'. I wonder if (a) any charities will take up this offer and (b) whether millions will be reading it this Sunday.

Unfortunately, I think a lot of people will buy it this Sunday, perhaps for 'historic' value if nothing else. It's a 'media event', the last in 168 years, they'll want to see what is being written in it.

teej · 07/07/2011 17:28

Norman - this is largely cosmetic. yes they can get some efficiencies but they will need staff for the sunday edition of the Sun. Reporter on BBC just confirmed employees will be able to reapply for jobs. so that aspect might not be quite as awful as it could have been as i agree many employees will not have known about this.

As for the rest of it - yup that's pretty much what i think.

mrsdonkeybucket · 07/07/2011 17:29

I wont be buying it.

I think it would be fitting for it to be the least sold 'last edition' of anything, ever.

ohyoubadkitten

I think that we as a public should make it clear that we do not like and will not tolerate the way that the media, the police and the govt. work in this country, and we have had enough.

If that means a protest, by all means.

BerryLellow · 07/07/2011 17:29

Yeah I think that they'll turn it into a melodramtic commemorative issue, probably with a wanky black cover or something. Sob, sob, sob.

I do feel sad for the innocent people caught in it, but chances are they will work on Sunday Sun, right?

Ormirian · 07/07/2011 17:30

Totally agree that this goes much further than one scummy tabloid with dodgy tactics. I really hope this doesn't make 'it all alright'.

mrsdonkeybucket · 07/07/2011 17:32

Don't forget the Politician's are all off on their summer hols soon.

Come September, will public feeling really still be this strong ?

We are fickle, us lot. Sad

NormanTebbit · 07/07/2011 17:34

yay for Ed Miliband "I don't think this solves the problem," an effective opposition - we live in hope

mrsdonkeybucket · 07/07/2011 17:36

Really ?

Cor, he's getting brave isn't he !

NormanTebbit · 07/07/2011 17:36

And it won't be a staff transfer across - yes people will reapply for their jobs but this is an excellent chance for management to get rid of people and 'drive efficiencies' with a seven day news operation - you get people to effectively do two jobs. So yes the staff of the Sun will expand but I doubt that all those people will be re-employed.

Flowerista · 07/07/2011 17:37

It's a thinly disguised sop. Turn the Scum into a 7 day week rag and hope that the BskyB gig won't be impacted. James need to tell his dad that people aren't stupid!
