I feel a bit sorry for those losing their jobs. Not the scumbags of course, but all other staff... Must be v sad for them to be losing their jobs.

Ponders · 07/07/2011 16:46

they'll start it up again wit6h a different name Hmm

stretch · 07/07/2011 16:46

I don't think this is very good news. It's a wash-out. Designed to stem the flow of blood from one area to keep the other bits alive IYSWIM?

hammybobs · 07/07/2011 16:46

I doubt sheridan will be exonerated - maybe released, retrial considered, and then dropped as too expensive to pursue all over again. He's hardly going to be considered innocent of lying under oath as a result of this.

NormanTebbit · 07/07/2011 16:47

OMFG

GrimmaTheNome · 07/07/2011 16:47

NI says this weeks issue is it's last as NOTW.

Its not just going to come back rebranded is it? E.g. 'SUNday' ...

BerryLellow · 07/07/2011 16:47
Shock

I didn't see that coming

teej · 07/07/2011 16:48

They are trying to stop wider contamination to the rest of the NI group.

You don't think NI will launch a new Sunday offering in a couple of weeks' time? The Sun on Sunday perchance?

BerryLellow · 07/07/2011 16:48

Grimma I thought that too - SUNday

HerBeX · 07/07/2011 16:49

OMG that is fucking huge damage limitation.

What are they hiding?

They'll just start up again with a different name and all the advertisers can jump back aboard again.

corygal · 07/07/2011 16:49

Murdoch & Co are losing a million quid a week anyway on the Times, not to mention NOTW. So there's profit to be made from that decision regardless of the ninja strategies that will be going on.

(Those will be the strategies that the rest of the media will comically pretend don't exist, even tho' they're the only ones in a position to have a nice juicy guess.)

Um. sorry, I've just linked to Jon Snow's comments on the closure of the NOTW in AIBU by mistake, but here it is again.

Well done Mumsnet, eh.

AwesomePan · 07/07/2011 16:49

thye will not just give up the Sunday dominance thats for sure.

headfairy · 07/07/2011 16:50

I'm sure you're right stretch...

OP posts:
teej · 07/07/2011 16:50

Grin oh great to see lots of us are cynical!

hurricanewyn · 07/07/2011 16:50

Is anyone actually losing their jobs though? Cos if not, then they're obviously planning on restarting a new title almost immediately

HerBeX · 07/07/2011 16:51

I bet they hacked Gordon Brown...the Queen... Prince William... Simon Cowell... I mean who is big enough to cause the sacrifice of the News of the Screws to save other bits of NI?

Ormirian · 07/07/2011 16:52

Cutting off a poisoned limb when what we need is to chop off it's head.

CrapolaDeVille · 07/07/2011 16:52

That man must be soooo loaded as closing this rag was his cheapest and least messy option, thus proving that he knew all about it.a man that successful has probably hacked every rival, every person he's in business with.....

teej · 07/07/2011 16:53

i'm with cory - it's a financial decision as much as anything
let's face it, an organisation doesn't grow a conscience overnight...

WorzselMummage · 07/07/2011 16:53

They are seriously running scared. There must be more to this than meets the eye.. the mind boggles.

happygilmore · 07/07/2011 16:53

There must be a lot more damaging revelations to come. I'm shocked, but is it me, or does it show how much RM wants the Sky takeover to go through?

happygilmore · 07/07/2011 16:54

BBC saying giving this edition's revenue to charity...PURLEEASE! How cynical is that?!
