Ok sorry will start new thread! bit new to this but am SO incensed had to join in.

Hassled · 07/07/2011 12:32

That Telegraph article is fascinating, catinthehat. And good on Oborne for his acknowledgement of Rusbridger and the Guardian.

BornSicky · 07/07/2011 12:34

"catinthehat" oborne was just on the beeb as well. the telegraph seem very angry about this. mind you he is "new tory" and not always a popular pm choice.

also seems that above the personalities involved, they are pretty appalled at NI.

Terribletriplets · 07/07/2011 12:41

Thanks for the link to newsnight, thisisanicecage.

www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b012f4z1/Newsnight_05_07_2011/

It is 19 minutes in where a member talks about the veiled threats to the members of the HoC committee, if they tried to force Rebekah BROOKS to testify. It is the intimidation of the members of the HoC committee that I find chilling. I didn't get his name (Adam something) because I accidentally unplugged myself. But it is at 19 minutes.

Terribletriplets · 07/07/2011 12:49

Who are the News of the World columnists? Gary Lineker? Dave Gorman? (I might be wrong about DG). Does anyone know who else?

jenny60 · 07/07/2011 12:50

I too am Shock by the Telegraph piece. Thanks for linking to it catinthehat. It is just extraordinary and almost restores my faith in journalists. Very brave, to the point and, I suspect, a very good move on the behalf of the Telegraph.
He's thrown down the gauntlet now, hasn't he? What will DC do I wonder? If he has an ounce of sense he'll postpone the BskyB deal and call for RB to be sacked.

Also very glad to be a Guardian buyer this week.

AwesomePan · 07/07/2011 12:54

jenny - that's exactly what I have told Jeremy Hunt to do, so it's only a matter of time.Grin.

AwesomePan · 07/07/2011 12:56

tt- it's Adam Jones and he is a Plaid Cymru member of the cmte.

Terribletriplets · 07/07/2011 12:59

Thank you awesome. Has Adam Jones been interviewed about the veiled threats wrt latest developments. I think that it is that detail that has been troubling me for a while.

ThisIsANiceCage · 07/07/2011 13:01

Adam Price was the MP saying the House of Commons committee felt threatened.

Tom Watson and I think Adrian Sanders are the other MPs who have done sterling work on this over the years, pushing and pushing while everyone else looked the other way.

crazynanna · 07/07/2011 13:02

British Legion is pulling away from NOTW as it's campaigning partner.
British Legion says they are "shocked to the core" on the hacking of servicemen.

madamimadam · 07/07/2011 13:16

Jenny 60, Yes. Me too. I've actually gone out and bought the print edition of the Guardian each day since the story broke - felt it was the closest I could get to a gesture of support.

Has anyone read the Indy articles on this:

The law exists to prosecute RB

and, interesting in light of the comments about Robert Peston further up the thread:

Robert Peston ...

madamimadam · 07/07/2011 13:23

And I can't believe it is taking Tesco this long to decide to pull its ad spend with NOTW. Mme Lindt, I thought your letter to them was excellent.

Amazed that a supermarket (core customers = families) would not have pulled out by now (Exploiting the grieving families of murder victims, terror victims, dead soldiers ok then, is it? Giving a family false hope that their daughter might be alive and perverting the course of justice - Tesco brand values, are they?).

What exactly does it take for them to find their spine - or as I'm increasingly starting to think - what exactly is the nature of their relationship with News International? Are they being begged to stay on, as if they left, RB would have to go too?

Pusillanimous immoral little fuckers.

madamimadam · 07/07/2011 13:31

Just found this on the Guardian live blog page re: Tesco.

1.27pm: Re Tesco, James Robinson has noticed that Andrew Higginson, Chief Executive of Retailing Services and Group Strategy Director at Tesco, also sits as a non-executive director on the BSkyB board.

That'll explain it then...

DoingTheBestICan · 07/07/2011 13:33

Glad to say my employer, Boots have just released a statement saying that they wont be advertising in the NOTW in light of all this, they said an advery that has been arranged for a long time will be in this Sundays Fabulous mag but after that nothing.

Twatesco will never get another penny from me again.

madamimadam · 07/07/2011 13:51

I was an idiot & started a thread on the Tesco/BSkyB links and then read that a Ford exec is also on the BSkyB board. But not before I'd posted. What a chump.

But in the interests of accuracy, wanted to post that info here too.

BornSicky · 07/07/2011 13:57

bskyb decision delayed until spetember, so says the FT!

GrimmaTheNome · 07/07/2011 14:01

I don't think you're a chump madam.

The fact that one company where there's a potential conflict of interest can do the right thing and another doesn't, makes the latter even worse.

FakePlasticTrees · 07/07/2011 14:32

so other than Tescos, who should i be avoiding as they advertise in this evil scum rag? Is there a list? (Glad to hear Boots have pulled advertising, esp as I didn't know they advertise in there and just bought a load of stuff) Tescos, my £100+ this week is going to Sainsburys, how much is that advertising going to cost you really?

MmeLindor. · 07/07/2011 14:40

Oh, that is interesting, Madam. And very interesting that Ford were one of the first companies to distance themselves - I think that may be the American influence. My DH works for a large American firm and they are BIG on honesty and loyalty. Not saying that the dirty tricks don't happen in US firms, but they are quick to distance themselves from anything immoral.

Tesco sent a generic email saying that they would be waiting for the results of the investigation. Sorry, Tesco but that is a customer lost then.

We normally spend several £100 in Tesco when we are in UK, that money will be going to Sainsbury instead. Not that it will hit Tesco's profit margin by much, but still.

chipstick10 · 07/07/2011 14:49

I enjoy sky news very much it is head and shoulders above the bbc which has its own agenda shall we say. I dont think the standards will drop if the takeover goes ahead.

madamimadam · 07/07/2011 14:52

Grimma, you're very kind. I felt more than a little foolish. And as you say, it sends out a very clear message that Tesco are more than happy - almost determined - to fund a paper whose conduct has been exposed as immoral, illegal and - in view of the comments made in yesterday's debate - anti-democratic. Those brand 'values' look shabbier by the hour.

MmeLindor I bet you're right about US values - they do seem to take a sterner view of corporate misconduct when it is uncovered

And if you, me Fake Plastic Trees and others avoid them from now on, it will add up. Tesco's own slogan makes me believe it will. (Though I bet they will try a 5p off petrol deal or some such to try and make us crawl back)

JustineMumsnet · 07/07/2011 14:53

I've just spoken Morrisons' media relations bod chap who called us this morning - he says Morrisons won't be advertising in this Sunday's NOTW.
