Are there that many people boycotting NOTW? i'm still unconvinced this isn't just a media/politico story....loved by the chattering class/twitterati - not sure the rest of the country cares

We'll see on Sunday

Al0uiseG · 07/07/2011 08:46

Agree with NoddyHolder it's rather like MP's expenses in a way. We sort of subliminally knew it goes on but when it's blown up in our faces we have to react.

Jux · 07/07/2011 09:01

Morrison's have just said that they will not be advertising in NotW this w/e, and are considering their position.

TheRhubarb · 07/07/2011 09:20

All that will happen with the takeover bid now is that because they are seen to be unfit to own the shares they will have to raise their bid. Jeremy Hunt has already said that they have the go ahead to buy the shares outright, albeit at a much higher price than they anticipated. But Murdoch will do all he can to push the bid through - it encapulates all of his ambitions and everything he's worked for so there is no way he's going to roll over now.

The Spectator makes for a depressing read.

Rollergirl1 · 07/07/2011 09:21

All of these brands/companies coming out and "making a stand" and not advertising in the NOTW is, quite frankly, just posturing. There are legal contracts in place with NI, they can't just pull out. All that will happen is that they will switch their advertising from NOTW to The Sun until the dust settles and then it will be business as usual, certainly within the next few months.

Andy Coulson is definitely being set up to take the brunt. I am sure he will be recompensed appropriately.

GetOrfMoiLand · 07/07/2011 09:26

I never actually gave a monkeys about MPs expenses tbh. I thought it was all a storm in a teacup. MPs earn quite a low salary imo, I wouldn't do that job for that money. I think expenses claims were used as a sort of 'perk'.

Anyway that's by the by. There does seem though a real feeling of inevitability about it. That BSkyB thing will go through, and excuses will be made. It is utterly disgusting though.

I don't think this is a liberal/gliteratti thing. My DP is a builder, they are talking about it in the builders caffs, boycotting the Sun and NOTW.

I am normally lackadaisical and never campaign about anything, but am boycotting NI papers, Sky and companies which still advertise in NI papers (using it as a good excuse not to go to Tesco, frankly).

God they are scum, aren't they.

Still very impressed with Justine's stance. £30K revenue is not to be sniffed at. There have been several threads recently re MNHQ decisions saying that MN is now viewed by the founders as a business first and foremost. Yes, it is a business, but Justine has proved that they have a strong moral code, and put their money where their mouth is. Good in 'em.

GetOrfMoiLand · 07/07/2011 09:29

Roller - I would imagine that contracually the companies will still have to pay for the advertising, even if they can insist that the adverts will not go in.

But you are right in that they will just advertise in other NI papers, which is why a boycott of the whole group is needed.

They should have made a rule that a proprietor could only own 1 daily, 1 Sunday paper (this planwas mooted some time ago and rejected out of hand). It is ridiculous that RM owns so much if the media in this country.

StupidSexyFlanders · 07/07/2011 09:39

The facebook group someone linked to before which had over 3000 followers has vanished without a trace. I have gone through my notifications and there is no hint of it anywhere. Confused

LadyBeagleEyes · 07/07/2011 09:48

I wonder about sales of the NOW on Sunday. It's difficult to guage on MN as not many people buy the paper anyway.
But NOW readers are watching the news, just like us, and I bet a lot of them, especially the women, will buy another paper on Sunday.
I imagine most of them will be as disgusted as we are re Millie Dowler and all the other phone hacker victims.
I'd be interested to find out the opinions of NOW readers, but I'm not going to find it on MN.
If anyone knows, I'd like to see a link.

BerryLellow · 07/07/2011 09:52

My DP is also a builder, and he was talking about this last night. He did say that boycotting NOTW is easily done, but knowing what the related companies/products were is harder and would have a bigger effect if the information was out there.

I've put links on my fb page to the boycott group and also the avaaz letter. So possibly some of my 'friends' will see and think about it.

noddyholder · 07/07/2011 09:54

I think they will pull the mother of all sleb scandals out of the bag for sunday tbh. They are apologetic in public and contrite but in reality they are still a business and want to sell papers

freybean · 07/07/2011 09:55

morrisons have said they are still going to plan to place adds

npower and british legion have pulled out

BerryLellow · 07/07/2011 09:57

boycott NI

Rollergirl1 · 07/07/2011 10:08

NOTW this sunday will be scant to say the least. And they will be expecting circulation to be down. I'm sorry to be sceptical about all this but I think this is nothing more than herd mentality. Most people are boycotting because they think they should because everyone else is. It wont last.

noddyholder · 07/07/2011 10:09

I agree rollergirl Would love to see NI collapse but its not going to happen.

MmeLindor. · 07/07/2011 10:17

I think that not just the Guardian readers are incensed by this. The hacking of phones of soldiers who died in combat and the 7/7 victims takes this to a whole new level.

The kind of person who reads the NOTW is going to be angry at that, it is so deeply British and patriotic, to support the forces - a position that the NI papers have taken and been vocal about for years.

Nancy66 · 07/07/2011 10:21

Still not convinced but happy to be proved wrong.

It's not the most read story by a long shot on any of the widely read sites like BBC and Mail Online

slug · 07/07/2011 10:29

This is all over Twitter at the moment. I thought it was quite a good analysis.

CrapolaDeVille · 07/07/2011 10:37

Apparently RW/RB found her sleb boyf in bed with a bloke and stabbed him.....he then dropped charges for fear of homosexuality coming out.

ThisIsANiceCage · 07/07/2011 10:37

Hugh Grant shreds Paul MacMullan on TV.

According to the charming Mr MacMullan, it's not wrong to hack phones as long as the victim is rich.

QUICK Switch on ITV This Morning.

Nancy66 · 07/07/2011 10:43

Would that be Hugh Grant the crack whore shagging cheat?

MmeLindor. · 07/07/2011 10:43

Ex NOTW reporter on This Morning revealing stories of a safe in the office, and carrier bags full of money.

StupidSexyFlanders · 07/07/2011 10:44
