Or just go to www.avaaz.org to support their campaign to bombard the Government consultation with thousands of e mails.

Wow! 70,000 messages for a hacking inquiry and to stop Murdoch's deal! We have 48 hours to get the government to act -- forward this to everyone:

Dear friends across the UK,

Jeremy Hunt says he'll let Rupert Murdoch own all of BSkyB, despite the hacking outrages. We have 48 hours to flood the public consultation with requests to stop the deal, and call on the government to initiate a public inquiry into the hacking scandals. Let's save our media and democracy. Send a message now.

Last week Jeremy Hunt said he'll allow Murdoch to own all of BSkyB. Now a series of reports of criminal and indecent Murdoch journalism are coming out -- hacking murdered Milly Dowler, the Soham girls, and the 7/7 families! We have 48 hours to flood the BSkyB public consultation and stop the deal.

We've done it before -- in the last consultation Hunt said our avalanche of 40,000 messages delayed the deal as his officials had to read each email carefully, fearing a legal challenge. Now our voices could halt the deal and get a full inquiry into this vile hacking.

Murdoch's media tramples standards and ignores ethics, and the whole country is horrified. But the government is pushing to give him full control of our largest commercial broadcaster. It's an outrage and threatens the very pillars of our democracy! The official consultation ends on Friday. Send a message now calling on Hunt and Cameron to refuse Murdoch's BSkyB deal until there's a full Competition Commission review and a full public inquiry into phone hacking:

www.avaaz.org/en/murdoch_messages_2/?vl

Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation already owns 40% of British newspapers and 40% of BSkyB, the UK?s largest commercial broadcaster. In the US, Australia and elsewhere this degree of media dominance would not be allowed. News Corporation has admitted responsibility for hacking the phones of politicians and celebrities, and now stands accused of listening to messages of a murdered 13 year old girl. But our government wants to give Murdoch power over half of our media, allowing him to then squeeze out his rivals one by one.

Since November we?ve repeatedly rallied to stop Murdoch. We've sent messages, phoned ministers, done stunts, and funded adverts and legal challenges. Jeremy Hunt says our actions have delayed the deal and persuaded him to make changes to how Sky News will be treated if Murdoch takes over BSkyB. He's had to hire extra lawyers and is nervous about a battle in the courts. We're making an impact, but the conditions Hunt plans to put on the takeover won't work, as Murdoch regularly runs rings round regulators.

Now is the moment to stand up for our media and our democracy and build pressure on the government. Let's send messages calling on Jeremy Hunt and David Cameron to refuse Murdoch's BSkyB deal until the deal has been reviewed by the Competition Commission and a full judge led public inquiry into the hacking scandal is conducted and completed. Send a message now, and encourage your friends to do so.

www.avaaz.org/en/murdoch_messages_2/?vl

An independent and diverse media is vital for holding governments to account and should not be in the hands of someone known for unethical journalistic practices and who often seeks favours in return for endorsing politicians and parties. But people power can stop this deal. If we all stand up together now in the UK, we?ll give hope to independent media advocates across the world.

With hope and determination,

Alex, Sam, Brianna, Alice, Ricken, Luis and the whole Avaaz team

Nancy66 - sorry you don't like my story, but like i say, straight from his PA's mouth. And it wasn't just a woman it was a woman who worked on the Sun.

I mean, there is a lot more from my time on the papers. Overt racism "come on Coolfonz let's wind up the sootys", misogyny "have you been raped? What properly? By someone you don't know?" The latter I can tell you the name of if you like as the c*nt is dead, thankfully...

donnie · 06/07/2011 18:40

coolfonz: nothing would surpise me. The truth is worse than any fiction it would appear.

Littleredant (welcome to Mn btw!) - true, it may be a 48 hour frenzy but I truly hope this is a defining moment ...maybe there is a sea change somewhere....

HedleyLamarr · 06/07/2011 18:46

I made my feelings clear wrt NI earlier in this thread. I am delighted that so many other Mners share them. What they did to MrsDevere was utterly disgusting, and her story brought me to tears. I shall continue my one man boycott of NI, and will be emailing any of the retailers who advertise in the NOTW to tell them why I won't be spending my hard earned with them.
Chibi, I have a Grundig Freesat box, it's really good.
This phone hacking story must be big, it's even been on Aljazeera!

Littleredant · 06/07/2011 19:14

donnie: we can only hope! This thread certainly gives me some. Also, it just might impinge on alert businesses that some of us really do care about business ethics and can actually do something about this. I'm now wondering what Nationwide are doing? Might just get my a**e in gear and change to Co-op/Britannia after years of procrastination.

thefirstMrsDeVere · 06/07/2011 19:31

badkitten I have contacted them and they gave me the rather patronizing response that along the lines 'they prefer to allow their customers to buy the publications they want to'

I have asked them if their patrons wished to stock hard core porn would they be happy to stock the latest copy of 'Big Uns up Your Arse'

I have yet to receive a reply.

skypaystherent · 06/07/2011 19:31

Namechanger (obviously). DH and I both work for Sky in 'normal' average paying jobs. We are both disgusted by this revelation as are all our colleagues. But really, what do you expect from the NOTW? It's a comic, not a newspaper. Pleas don't tar us all with the sme brush.

thefirstMrsDeVere · 06/07/2011 19:46

I dont think anyone is tarring employees of this huge company with the same brush as Murdoch and those involved with these events.

He employs thousands of ordinary people because he has so much power in this country.

I think the recent revalations pretty much prove this is not A Good Thing.

sovreign · 06/07/2011 19:49

Pannus, thank you. MIL and my Mum are emailing your call. Feel sick watching John Wittingdale's syrup on BBC news. Let's face it ladies, if money is at the root of all evil, a fresh faced flowering polititian will be at the top.

Ponders · 06/07/2011 19:51

Dunno if anyone else has linked to this but supposedly

\link{http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2011/jul/06/andy-coulson-phone-hacking\R Wade was on holiday for both the Millie Dowler & Soham hackings}

How convenient Hmm

However she was still the editor, & still the one without 'THE BUCK STOPS HERE' on her desk.

They can wriggle all they like, she'll have to go

Hassled · 06/07/2011 19:52

Re the Peston as NI toady thing, there's an interesting piece (warning - it's by Toby Young) here.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/07/2011 19:54

MrsD how rubbish of them! Good reply back.

KatieScarlett2833 · 06/07/2011 19:55

Did anyone else see The NI Legal numpty on the news saying that he didn't think the public was concerned that RB was still in a job?

I coughed my coffee all over the TV. Are they really that delusional?

TalkinPeace2 · 06/07/2011 19:56

Hassled - Yup there it is - not in the article but in the comments....
Peston's best friend when they were at the FT and still is his main Crony is one Will Lewis

For people wanting to boycott Sky, suggest you look into freesat with a PVR - that will do the job of Sky+ We love it - one off cost for dish and box - no monthly charges. It may even be possible to utilise an old Sky dish.
If you want to know of a good freesat or freeview box suggest you take a look at the Which website, though you may have to sign up for a trial - money well spent though compared to a Sky subscription.

Terribletriplets · 06/07/2011 20:10

Dear xx Thank you for your email to our Managing Director, Thierry Sybord, on the subject of the alleged phone hacking by the News of the World. In response to your request and to clarify our advertising position with the News of the World, we have made the following statement: Renault acknowledges the concerns raised regarding the allegations of phone hacking by the News of the World. As a result of the seriousness of the continued allegations, we can confirm that Renault has no media advertising currently planned with the News of the World, nor will we commit to any future activity, until the outcome of the formal investigations is complete. Once again we would like to thank you for having taken the time to share your view on this subject with us. Kind regards, Renault Customer Relations

Could we record the companies that are responding the the boycott?

Terribletriplets · 06/07/2011 20:11

How easy would it be for Tesco to write something similar?

sovreign · 06/07/2011 20:23

Jerusalem, God save you. Truly, david cam either has to order a quick public inquiry or consider his future. PLEASE NOTE the public inquiry DOESN'T include police payments for handing over details. How deep these rivers flow.

TalkinPeace2 · 06/07/2011 20:24

sovreign
yes it does
and especially as that has been against the law (both on the part of the payer and the recipient) since 1905
long jail terms

PurpleStrawberry · 06/07/2011 20:30

Having watched the news on several channels, and digested what they all had to say, I'm pondering how convenient it is that as soon as Rebekah Brooks/Wade was feeling the heat, NI found a piece of paper pointing to Andy Coulson making payments to the detective in question.

I smell something fishy here.

Nat87 · 06/07/2011 20:43

Surely the buck does not stop with Rebekah Wade/Brooks; she is a subordinate of Rupert Murdoch. He has the ultimate responsibility for what happens in his organization.
Let's not forget what that organization includes: News of the World, The Sun, The Times, The Sunday Times, Sky TV, SkyBet, Harper Collins, 20th Century Fox, Fox News etc.
Unfortunately he will get away with it, because none of the politicians in any country can risk standing up to him.

Ponders · 06/07/2011 20:48

it doesn't stop with her, but in terms of the hierarchy of the NOTW at the time she's a good place to start (before moving onward & upward)

Chipotle · 06/07/2011 20:52

Bloody hell, he owns Harper Collins aswell! Anything else I need to boycott?

KatieScarlett2833 · 06/07/2011 20:55

Osbourne on the hackers list too.

PurpleStrawberry · 06/07/2011 20:57

Well I won't find it difficult to not watch Faux Fox News.
