Were they waterboarding Justine before she got there?

poshme · 06/07/2011 13:39

Well done justine for making clear that you are losing money and not you stopping advertising in their paper.
Rubbish of them to not let you catch your breath! Smile

poshme · 06/07/2011 13:41

Yyy to whiffs! Well done justine.

MmeLindor. · 06/07/2011 13:41

Out of breath but very well argued, Justine. They might have brought you a glass of water.

Murdoch Heavie media expert talking rubbish.

This is a petition to Jeremy Hunt asking him not to approve the BSkyB deal until a proper competition commission has been set up and an inquiry into the hacking scandal.

Please sign it.

NerfHerder · 06/07/2011 13:45

bornsicky - those figures are for all murdoch papers in teh UK? because I thought Sun had 2.2m, NoTW 2.8m...

AwesomePan · 06/07/2011 13:47

yes Murdoch Heavyette WAS insisting the BSkyB deal must go ahead, until Boulter indicated it need not.

and big up Justine - contagions and whiffs - v v good.

BornSicky · 06/07/2011 13:50

notw stats

it's from here. i think they roll up data including sharing copies of the paper for example.

emmanana · 06/07/2011 13:52

If, for practical reasons you cannot boycott an 'advertiser' supermarket, you can still be heard. If you shop on Sunday, pick up a copy of the Screws of the World/The Scum as you go in; when you get to the toilet roll aisle, just leave it on a shelf. If enough people do this, they may just start taking notice, at the least it will piss them off Grin
Not illegal, and maybe somewhat childish, but hey....

changeforthebetter · 06/07/2011 13:52

I am afraid that we are going to find out just how powerful Murdoch is. I am pro-boycott I don't read used loo roll the Murdoch press anyway but did email businesses I do use via the proforma. I don't think boycotts are a complete waste of time. I think not to protest would be worse. However, Murdoch has the political establishment by the balls and he will be twisting them very tightly to get his deal pushed through. Politicians are terrified of him and our media is doomed. I don't actually think he even gives a damn that his papers will be regarded with suspicion. As long as they continue to furnish salacious details of footballers' extracurricular activities, they will sell and Murdoch will make even more money.

I cannot begin to express how wicked it is to make money from the violent deaths of people. It is just the lowest imaginable motive. Welcome to MurdochLand Sad

Coolfonz · 06/07/2011 13:55

Hi, I'm a bloke and a journalist (kinda now...boring story) who used to work in the mass media/tabloids, had a few shifts on the Sun with Piers Morgan at Bizarre...etc etc.
I am pretty amazed people here had/have anything to do with the Sun/NOTW/Sky anyway. What did people think they were like?
The BBC ran a documentary about Murdoch a few years back, narrated by one of the McGanns (nice dig at the Scousers Rupert). It was all overseen by the Murdochs, they had final approval on what went in as they gave access to the film makers. It was a total fluff piece. Just one bit stood out for me, when Rupert's mother told the story of the time when Rupert decided to buy the NOTW at the end of the 1960's. She told of her surprise when Rupert told her he was buying it, he replied "these people have nothing better in their lives." I think that sums up the philosophy of News International. A patrician family who detest their customers, spreading an extreme right wing philosophy attacking immigrants, attacking any politician who threatens to close tax loopholes (remember Red Oskar)...as for Fox News in the states...pure American fascism.

Another story. I knew the p.a. to a famous former editor of the Sun, she knocked about with mates of mine about 15 years ago. She told a story of the editor in question having a big party at his house, everyone was pissed/coked up. He was wearing a daft suit or shirt, something like that, bit flashy. So he asked my mate what do you think? And she said it sucked badly. He turned to a woman reporter from the Sun next to him and asked her, she said it sucked badly. So he punched her full in the face, knocked her spark out.

I mean, imagine the shit they will never be caught for...

TalkinPeace2 · 06/07/2011 13:57

Robert Peston is a NI toadie - be very aware that he is biased on this.

Have you all asked your local Pubs to cancel their Sky?

OFCOM can stop the BSkyB deal by declaring NI unfit - they would then have to sell ALL the shares

Show your Outrage on that petition .....

edam · 06/07/2011 13:57

As Catisleepy has said, it was the Guardian that exposed this, through dogged reporting over more than a year. They kept plugging away, even when everyone else, including the police, CPS, parliament and government, kept trying to shut down the issue, claiming it was nothing but one rogue reporter and a handful of celebs.

RossettiConfetti · 06/07/2011 13:58

Nerf Herder, those figures are for how many people read NOTW, not buy it. They work this out for every newspaper - sales figures and readership. So one family member buys a copy that is also read by 3 others in the household, meaning you times the sales figures by 3 or 4. They are fairly accurate and tracked every month, as its based on these figures a newspaper decides how much to charge for advertising space.

Yes, lots of older people and couples who maybe are, dare I say, stuck in their ways, reading NOTW and The Sun. The target demographic is the people who collect the vouchers for the very popular 'holiday for a tenner' annual offer.

Men in their twenties, or teens, don't really buy newspapers much. They read sports news online, on their smart phones - yep, even the builders. Women don't either. The under-30s is the smallest group of newspaper buyers, because they get it all online.

Although said men are probably going on NOTW and The Sun's website, and hits to the website count just as much, if not more, than newspaper sales especially in terms of advertising revenue.

TalkinPeace2 · 06/07/2011 14:02

edam
It was in fact Private Eye, around five years ago - they have been quietly plugging away, knowing that sooner or later the big papers would take it and roll with it.
Private Eye also fought FOI requests with the MP's for years before the Telegraph got their CD
and Private Eye are still working on superinjunctions, including ones that have prevented people pressing charges for assault in the workplace.

donnie · 06/07/2011 14:03

can someone give a precis of what justine said please.

Greythorne · 06/07/2011 14:04

Talkinpeace
what makes you think Peston is a NI toadie?
Interesting, but what proof is there?

madamimadam · 06/07/2011 14:06

Does anyone know where we can find out if our MP has attended today's debate?

Mine's getting a shoeing if he hasn't (bar excuses of vital Parliamentary business/inventing cure for common cold etc obv)

BornSicky · 06/07/2011 14:07

donnie MNers don't like the link between sky and News International and especially don't like what NOTW did - she referenced Milly Dowler.

it's cost MN £20-30K in revenue and she said advertisers boycotting the NOTW were welcome to come to MN! Grin

She said she felt it wasn't a question of sides: Guardian versus NOTW/NI, or a case solely of interest to the media.

She said we (the members) wanted an inquiry, criminal investigation and would potentially always see a link between sky and NI, because of Murdoch.

AwesomePan · 06/07/2011 14:10

and she also said AwesomePan is the most valued poster. Ever.

is Adam B a bit of a leftie? IN the days before I stopped watching Sky News, i.e .yesterday, he always seem to take a healthily sceptical view.

franke · 06/07/2011 14:14

I note the PM and deputy PM are not present at the debate now going on. Plenty of Labour bigwigs present.

donnie · 06/07/2011 14:15

thank you Born.

franke · 06/07/2011 14:16

And, good grief, Nick Soames is enormous these days.

TalkinPeace2 · 06/07/2011 14:17

Greythorne
it was in the last Private Eye
www.private-eye.co.uk/index.php?
as always with them, lots of caveats, but basically they swap scoops to mutual accolades

donnie · 06/07/2011 14:18

I am getting a real sense of deja vu here; 10 or 11 years ago the tories approved Jeffrey Archer as their London Mayoral candidate and then - oops - he went to prison for perjury.
Last year David Cameron appointed Andy Coulson as his head of comms and it is now emerging that he is mired in corruption and paid police officers for information.

Fuckin A* choices there.
