apparently by deleting Milly's messages her family still had some hope that she might still be alive

BornSicky I am just reading the link to the 7/7 hacking item and I am utterly, utterly aghast. I just don't have any adequate words to convey the disgust and revulsion I feel for these maggots.

MNHQ - well done . It was the right thing to do.

MollieO · 05/07/2011 22:56

The Independent editor said on NN that RB had commissioned one of the detectives who obtained Milly Dowler's parents' ex-directory phone number to do some private work for herself. So RB's plea of not knowing these detectives is rubbish.

Ponders · 05/07/2011 22:59

"wondering" about someone listening to his voicemail isn't the same as him knowing journalists who were doing it...

the Camillagate tapes were from 1989 - granted that was recorded live, rather than from voicemail, but the technology has clearly been available for more years than most of us have had mobile phones

Piffpaffpoff · 05/07/2011 23:05

Yes Ponders, you are right, I didn't word my first post correctly. He does not say he knows people whe were doing it. However, ive always felt that particular entry in the diaries was there for a reason, to imply that it was happening.

Suncottage · 05/07/2011 23:09

Ponders

I agree. The phone hacking of Charles/Camilla/Diana was atrocious.

I read the autobiography of James Hewitt and was astounded to find out that his letters from Princess Diana were stolen from a private safe by a journalist and he had to fight to get them back and they were published anyway.

He had no recourse whatsoever. I thought he had sold them.

That is what the papers led me to believe. Thank Christ I never bought that paper.

thederkinsdame · 05/07/2011 23:10

How the hell can any journo claim to not know that it is wrong to hack the phone of an abducted child? I'm sorry, but they must think the entire nation has been lobotomised. I am currently trying to persuade DH to relinquish our Sky package as well. We all need to stand up and be counted over this, otherwise we are giving lowlifes like this permission to behave like scum. I hope they throw the book at them and charge them with obstructing a murder enquiry (or several?). I'd like to see the lot of them in the dock and go dowm for many years.

emmanana · 05/07/2011 23:13

Glen Mulclaire 'I was under relentless pressure'
Absolute scumbag.
He is TOTALLY responsible for his own actions. It was him alone that made the choice to hack into Milly's phone. If he was that bothered about what he was doing, then he should have looked for other work. His greed drove him to continue his work. Now Milly's and Holly and Jessica's parents face further heartache as their childrens photos are splashed across newspapers repeatedly. Those poor parents. The tabloids who use these images still to illustrate this story are no better than NI.
I sincerely hope that this piece of filth is haunted by his actions for the rest of his life; that every day he has to think about the despicible and immoral work he undertook, and when challenged blamed it on 'pressure'. Bollocks. We all face pressure in order to earn money. Thankfully the majority of us handle it without causing harm and heartache to others.

Ponders · 05/07/2011 23:16

Granted he didn't have to do it, but saying "it was him alone" lets the Rebekahs of the media world off the hook...

moshchops · 05/07/2011 23:18

Nasty spineless piece of shite, is any amount of money or kudos worth breaking the hearts of Milly's parents

Motherfunster · 05/07/2011 23:19

Just seen MN has pulled Sky

www.guardian.co.uk/media/blog/2011/jul/05/phone-hacking-live-updates#block-14

Good on ya MN.

thederkinsdame · 05/07/2011 23:25

You know what? Any hack or news corp who has profited from the phone hacking stories should be made to give any earnings from the hacked stories to a charity of the Dowler's/Chapman and Wells families choice.

emmanana · 05/07/2011 23:26

I don't think any of the media world should be off the hook, but it was HIS choice to sit at that pc and use all the information and technology he had to break into Milly's phone account, so his defence of 'pressure' leaves a vile taste in the mouth. He could have said NO.
He did not have a gun against his head, just pound signs dancing in front of his eyes.
And the media, journos, execs, and everyone of them who were waving the pounds around are just as guilty.
You pay for a hitman, you're as guilty as he.

LineRunner · 05/07/2011 23:27

I think what would really hurt NoW and News Int is the advertisers jumping ship.

The threat of people such as MNers boycotting Tesco, for example, who advertise in NoW, would apparently be massive, according to Newsnight.

Suncottage · 05/07/2011 23:31

Milly's parents are seeking damages against the News of the World.

Price anyone?

Give a figure.

One million?

Two million?

Ten million?

What price for thinking your missing daughter could be alive thanks to the NOW?

For me it would be seeing those responsible sacked and never to work in journalism again. No money. Just that they are sacked and fuck off with no payoff.

Would they have the dignity to do that?

Doubt it.

MollieO · 05/07/2011 23:35

Whose dignity are you talking about?

Suncottage · 05/07/2011 23:40

MolliO

Rupert Murdoch's 'staff'. Just to leave with no payout.

MollieO · 05/07/2011 23:42

I hoped that is what you meant as your message could also refer to the Dowlers' dignity, which made me a bit Hmm at your comment. Now you've clarified it I completely agree. I think RB will resign tomorrow.

forkful · 05/07/2011 23:54

Well done Justine & MNHQ. Proud to be a MNer!

Am down to a v. occasional Saturday or Sunday Times (due to general mysogeny I can now see). However I will now give these up too.

forkful · 05/07/2011 23:57

(Hmm my post made no sense. I used to read The Times most days. Since discovering feminism I went totally off it and probably buy one every couple of months. I will now boycott them fully.

HerBeX · 06/07/2011 00:03

Even for the News of the Screws, this was quite astonishingly wicked. It's like they have different mores and values from the rest of us. Awful, awful people, I hope someone goes to prison for this.

But I don't expect anyone will. Most politicians and senior police officers are in Murdoch's pocket. The police were either afraid to investigate them or were paid not to, that's pretty obvious. And politicians are scared to upset them because they've got so much dirt on them and where they haven't, they fear that they can just turn public opinion against them and lose them the election - they don't need super-injunctions, they just give Murdoch ownership of all our media and therefore public opinion, in exchange for keeping their dirty secrets.

HerBeX · 06/07/2011 00:03

And well done MN Towers, it's exactly what I'd expect from you.

MadAsASnakeNana · 06/07/2011 00:11

Well done MN. Agree with "HerBeX". Making money from grieving families, the whole idea makes me sick. Will be interesting to see how quickly Cameron dumps RB, no more cosy Christmas get-togethers.

WynkenBlynkenandNod · 06/07/2011 06:30

Well done MNHQ for acting so promptly . My natural reaction is to agree with HerBeX about what will happen. However thinking about it more I do think there is a chance that this could be the thing that people look at in the future and examine the role the Internet played in bringing down Murdoch.

I hadn't fully realised the extent of NI's holdings but thanks to this thread and Facebook I do now. Information spreads extremely quickly in this way. As MrsDeVere said so eloquently yesterday, it's vital we keep this up as companies are hedging their bets regarding advertising, so they can judge how quickly this will die down. It's vital it doesn't and continues to gain impetus. Looking at what's come out in the last 24 hours I think it will as people are so completely disgusted and enraged.

Am very cross Co-op hasn't suspended their advertising, would expect it of Tesco but had higher expectations of Co-Op. They are our local shop and won't be getting another penny from me for the moment.

luvvinlife · 06/07/2011 07:13

An absolute disgrace, and I urge everyone to boycott any Murdoch printed media.

Vile parasitic low lifes parading as journalists.....pure scum

DoingTheBestICan · 06/07/2011 07:32

This is going to be discussed by the MPs this afternoon after PMQT,i will be watching to see what they make of it all.

I cant stand tesco anyway but they will NEVER recieve another penny from me whilst they still advertise with these scumbags.

I noticed online yesterday that Butlins have pulled their advertising with them.
