Well done Justine & all at MN,like everyone else on here i am disgusted at what has been going on.

I hope whomever was responsible for this is made to pay.

AwesomePan · 05/07/2011 21:21

There is some good advice from some techie gods ( well compared to me) over in Geek as to how to avoid SKY without giving up digital tv in hard-to-reach places or with particular demands.

Empusa · 05/07/2011 21:23

"Please bear in mind that a lot of these companies are 'reviewing' their advertising. This really means they are waiting to see if the fuss dies down. We MUST keep up the pressure. We must show them that this is not a flash in the pan tabloid story so beloved of the very newspaper we are complaining about."

That.

Also be aware that some of them will withdraw advertising from NOTW, but still be supporting other NI newspapers.

PurpleStrawberry · 05/07/2011 21:23

stretch You will have some Sky channels which are part of the regular Virgin offerings, such as Sky One, the exact number will depend on what package you have.

These are the channels on Virgin that BSkyB own, which you may or may not have, depending on whether you have the M, L or XL package:

Sky 1/HD
Sky 2
Sky Living/+1/HD
Sky Livingit/+1
Sky Living Loves
Challenge/+1
Pick TV

Also, if you have XL package (like we do), you will have FX and FX HD, which are Fox International channels and thus also owned by Murdoch.

We're going to stop watching any Sky channels on Virgin, despite there being shows we love on them.

I think Rebekah will have to go - don't see how she can survive. Have worked with her and don't think too many that have will mourn her downfall.

Not sure how i feel about Hugh Grant etc jumping on the bandwagon - he's always hated the NOTW after the Divine Brown incident.

I'm also not clear whether Prescott's outrage was in place before or after he was exposed for cheating on his wife and entertaining his mistress at the tax payer's expense.

PurpleStrawberry · 05/07/2011 21:25

Oh and also, all the Comedy Central channels, they're owned by Paramount Partnership which is a partnership between Paramount and BSkyB, so they're also off limits in our house now.

Jeyre · 05/07/2011 21:26

If you want to contact companies who advertise with News of the World, you might be interested in notwadboycott.posterous.com/encourage-a-news-of-the-world-advertiser-boyc which has handy pre-filled emails and forms you can use.

I'm not usually one to be an activist on the Internet, but I'm absolutely appalled by the NOTW's actions.

Thanks purple. We are locked into the XL package until Dec (?) but will cancel the sport and movies.

DH is disappointingly blah about cancelling the movies etc.. He is bothered about the hacking and is disgusted, but doesn't see what a difference we can do by boycotting!

I am disappointed by him actually.

PurpleStrawberry · 05/07/2011 21:31

Sorry me again, BSkyB also own Sky Arts (not that anyone probably watches those) and all the Nickelodeon channels.

stretch · 05/07/2011 21:32

How is it being reported on NOTW etc..? Are bad comments about it on the Daily Mail being left or deleted?

I would go on, but don't want to increase viewings.

shineynewthings · 05/07/2011 21:36

Yes hope the £9.50 holidays go to another newspaper. The only thing I used to buy The Sun for.

PurpleStrawberry · 05/07/2011 21:36

We're not getting rid of XL, as there are other channels we like that are only on XL, we're just going to stop watching the channels owned by BSkyB.

IShallWearMidnight · 05/07/2011 21:40

Stretch - DH is similarly "appalled" and "disgusted" but not enough to cancel the sky sports part of our Virgin contract Sad.

GastonTheLadybird · 05/07/2011 21:41

Wow, look at the front page of the Indie tomorrow. Rebekah is beyond fucked.

here

NorksAreMessy · 05/07/2011 21:41

Any boycott, however small, is a GOOD THING.

OUT goes the Sunday Times (habit only has kept his entering the house)
OUT goes Sky TV...we watch is less and less every week
thanks MNHQ for listening

VivaLeBeaver · 05/07/2011 21:42

I wonder how much piers Morgan knows about it all? He was editor of news of the world for a while.

NorksAreMessy · 05/07/2011 21:43

And just consider...you still cannot buy (even if you wanted to) The Sun in Liverpool on account of their despicable treatment of the Hillsborough tragedy.
Quite right too

stretch · 05/07/2011 21:43

He is going to cancel it, but with a face like this.... Sad and a bit like this Envy (just the eyebrows) and like this Angry

SharonGless · 05/07/2011 21:44

Well done MNHQ
The right decision yet again - wholehearted support for you

EightiesChick · 05/07/2011 21:44

On Radio 4 this afternoon they quoted a NOTW editorial from 2002, about Estelle Morris, the then education minister, where the editorial referenced Harry Truman's 'The buck stops here' saying and arguing that Morris should either admit her ignorance or her complicity in shoddy goings on - but either way she should take responsibility. Interesting to see that they are familiar with exactly the argument people are now applying to Brooks - when it suits them to be.

flippinada · 05/07/2011 21:45

Me too. Proud to be a MN'er today (well, I always am but especially so Grin)

PurpleStrawberry · 05/07/2011 21:49

I cannot help but wonder what on earth will come out next.

Ponders · 05/07/2011 21:51

Morgan was only there from 94-96 so is innocent of this particular debacle (he had his own with those fake photos in the Mirror...)
