apparently by deleting Milly's messages her family still had some hope that she might still be alive

50 channels and rising every week
there is NO NEED FOR ANYBODY to pay for Sky unless they want to subsidise footballers wages

catinthehat2 · 05/07/2011 20:51

I'm curious, and genuinely have no idea of the answer to this, but

if Rebekah Brooks head is presented on a plate (as it surely will be), will that be the end of it? will the outrage die down?

or where will it actually end?

PurpleStrawberry · 05/07/2011 20:51

Just when you thought it couldn't get any worse, the news about Holly and Jessica.

Without wanting to go into details, there is a close family link to one of the two girls on my DH's side, so this news has really hit close to home.

It's sickening.

BornSicky · 05/07/2011 20:51

just read the telegraph article link and saw that the Sky contract was worth about £30,000 to MN.

Thank you Justine!

Realise that's quite a big whack of revenue and you've also just pissed off the very big boys by cancelling - all credit to you.

housemum · 05/07/2011 20:51

BT Vision only works if you have high speed cables. Virgin is cable too. We are pretty stuffed here as we have no cables, half-meg broadband and a grainy aerial reception.

I will miss India Knight/Caitlin Moran/Samurai Sudoku but the Times at the weekend will be scrapped for us. Could India please just put her column on here instead :)

Still seems unbelievable that they could think of deleting her messages - not so much the content necessarily (though how would they know what was and wasn't significant to the enquiry) but the fact that it gave the parents false hope when they believe she was using her phone.

MmeLindor. · 05/07/2011 20:53

Good for MNHQ. Do pleased that they reacted so swiftly.

catinthehat2 · 05/07/2011 20:54

I've just read the Telegraph article linked to above.

Talk about putting your money where your mouth is.

Respect to Justine and the owners of MN Shock

"The contract was believed to have been worth about £30,000 to Mumsnet but Justine Roberts, co-founder of the group, said she did not think it was right to "take the Murdoch shilling" while investigations continued into phone hacking at the newspaper.

"Sky were running an ad campaign and our members have been very active in talking about the News of the World," she said. "I have rarely seen anything where they have been quite so unanimously appalled. We have taken the decision to remove that ad campaign from our website."

AwesomePan · 05/07/2011 20:54

I have asked for asssitance from the techie people in Geek.

When SENIOR tabloid editors are criminally charged with perverting the course of justice, hacking, bribing police officers, DVLA staff , BT staff
IE when the buck stops at the top

which will never happen

so probably when Kate announces she's up the duff everybody will coo and get distracted

I'd like to see Rebekah Brookes sacked and investigated for complicity in criminal actions; ditto any other member of staff or boss at NI involved in this horror.

I'd like to see the disbandment of the PCC, and instead a new regulatory body set up (as Hugh Grant suggested) "with teeth" like Ofcom for the newspaper industry.

I'd dearly love to see the end of the gutter press and the UK's obsession with the private lives of anybody news-worthy - celebrity or grieving families.

(I doubt the third will happen, but this kind of incident may contribute to people waking up a little to the extent that the red tops will go to get the story that people are buying...)

housemum · 05/07/2011 20:58

TalkinPeace - thanks for the link, we actually have a DVD/hard disk recorder/Freeview box that we got some time ago, but recently we had to use it for a few days when the Sky box broke and the reception was pretty dire unfortunately - lots of tall trees around, and restrictions about aerial heights.

sayanything · 05/07/2011 21:00

Thanks Justine.

I think emails etc to advertisers should mention that advertising should be pulled from NI, not just NOTW.

PurpleStrawberry · 05/07/2011 21:00

Justine - all credit to Mumsnet for acting so swiftly.

On a separate note, Rebekah Brookes is either a liar and knew full well what was going on, or she was incompetent and didn't know what the staff she was responsible for were doing.

I know where I put my money.

thestringcheeseincident · 05/07/2011 21:01

Kudos Justine.

stretch · 05/07/2011 21:02

This is sickening. Sad

Go Justine and co though!

So let me get this straight, we have Virgin contract, pay extra for sports and movies, that is going straight into Murdoch's pocket, but the rest of the Virgin is fine???

MrsTigglewinkle · 05/07/2011 21:04

Your local library probably has a subscription to many News International papers ... which you are paying for through your council tax.
They may also have an online subscription to them through News UK... which your council tax also pays for.
You'll probably find that the civic centre has at least one subscription and other council offices too.
What about the school your dcs go to? A subscription for their library, or the sixth form, or the staff room? You're paying for that too, either directly or indirectly.
And the doctors, the dentist, that coffee shop you visit, the list goes on.

AwesomePan · 05/07/2011 21:06

£30,000. That is ONE BIG decision MNHQ. Congrats and well done.

Please bear in mind that a lot of these companies are 'reviewing' their advertising. This really means they are waiting to see if the fuss dies down. We MUST keep up the pressure. We must show them that this is not a flash in the pan tabloid story so beloved of the very newspaper we are complaining about.

So often there is a story of the moment quickly discarded as soon as the next one comes along. This has far reaching implications and most of it hasnt come out yet.

How long are we going to allow the media to dictate the morals of our society? Its been getting worse and worse. MPs dont resign because they have done wrong, the resign because the Sun screams loud and long until they do, the justice system doesnt decide how long a child is incarcerated for, the tabloids do by giving the goverment the heebejeebie with all of their lurid coverage.

Now its our turn to take control back.

How dare they do what they did. How DARE they.

Keep emailing these companies until they have to respond. Keep posting on twitter and facebook even if your comments are deleted.

I will. But not tonight. I am exhausted. My inbox is full of those 'thank you for your email I can assure you a customer service operative will be in contact with you within 48 hrs' messages.

Poor Milly, what a legacy. If an abducted, murdered 13 is fair game to these people then I think we can assume noone is safe.

happygilmore · 05/07/2011 21:13

well done mumsnet for acting so promptly

TalkinPeace2 · 05/07/2011 21:14

Tigglewinkle
My Local Library is shut due to strikes
BUT
TBH the newspapers lose money.
You want to hit NI where it hurts - cancel your sky sub
does your pub show sky sports?
does your gym?
the money from Sky subscriptions finances the whole of Murdoch's empire (and footballers offensive wages into the bargain)

BornSicky · 05/07/2011 21:15

mrsdevere absolutely spot on. bows head
