Don't you think this photo makes it look like Willkat are just talking about themselves and their honeymoon and going 'me, me, me, me' and the Obamas are thinking (yeah, um, Middle East Peace, financial world collapsing...um yeah lovely bridesmaids, god these young windsors are self-absorbed...)

Bonkers. A democratically elected man & wife having to chat to our two unelected freeloaders. I have a feeling the Obamas were very polite and humoured the two of them.

CogitoErgoSometimes · 25/05/2011 12:19

It would look like that if you were determined to put a sarcastically anti-royal spin on a few photographs, certainly.

"The only fly in the ointment was U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton who committed something of a faux pas by arriving for the official lunch at Buckingham Palace wearing unflattering three quarter length trousers.
Although there is no official dress code, ladies are expected to wear a smart skirt or dress."

FFS!
it'd be ok if they went into detail about the mens' suit designers, but the endless blather about what the women wear is ridiculous!

CogitoErgoSometimes · 25/05/2011 12:29

They would 'blather' if Obama had turned up in Bermuda shorts...... Who wears pedal-pushers to an official gig?

meditrina · 25/05/2011 12:30

Mrs Obama is hosting an event for the Forces today. Given the Duke of Cambridge is a) currently serving and b) deeply involved in charities for the wounded, I don't agree with the assumption they would have nothing of substance to talk about.

RobynLou · 25/05/2011 12:33

yes, but all the detail of the other dresses? do people really care? I guess they do, it's just so utterly dull to me. meh.

CogitoErgoSometimes · 25/05/2011 12:50

All of these big state occasions are as much about what was worn and what was done as what was said. Political subtext runs through the whole thing - nothing is accidental. Mrs O choice of US designer is as significant in trade terms as the D of C's choice of UK designer for 'that dress' last month. And Hills turning up in shorts could be interpreted as the S of S not thinking the relationship is special enough to dress up for....

meditrina · 25/05/2011 12:52

Hillary Clinton always wears trousers during the day. It's no big deal that she has stayed with her norm.

bobthebuddha · 25/05/2011 13:21

Hammy02, last I knew of it, Michelle Obama hadn't stood for election & nor does any President's wife. Ironically, she comes in for a fair amount of flak in the US under the old freeloader accusation. I doubt she deserves it any more than 'our' two.

queenceleste · 25/05/2011 14:37

I was only saying doesn't it LOOK like Willkat are going "ME ME ME" from the angle of the photo. It just made me laugh that these very clever powerful people are talking to this couple who may well think they're more important than they are!

I'm not suggesting anything other than the appearance of the photo.

I do also think the Windsors are heinous freeloaders too though, however turbo anorexic KH is already looking..... worrying in terms of recent history.

What does Kate M talk about? Her holiday, her house, her wedding? Michelle is older, but can talk about her career/work, charity stuff. Still feel sad that all that education and at 30, KM has done/achieved nothing.
