But getting a babysitter at 14 makes them love you forever cos you've given them money. You get to keep them until University and they even come back and babysit in the holidays.

For the second time today on MN I shall say - fuckssakes!!

I mean, for fecking fuckssakes! I used to babysit from about 12/13 without a problem... I certainly don't think it is a problem - especially from 14 onwards - for brothers and sisters!!

I really don't like the way it infantilises young people. One of the things I remember is a sense of responsibility for my younger brothers. I don't think I'd be allowed to have that now, would I - it would be "inappropriate" in a fourteen year old!

What counts as a "short time"? Does this mean that children under sixteen can't go to school on their own? I got myself to school from the age of eight (half hour bus journey). Not sure if the babysitting thing is only for overnight. I wouldn't think it fair to ask someone to sit on their own overnight, but for an ordinary evening I'm happy with a responsible 14 year old (and definitely for their own brothers and sisters).
