How does doing that make her any better than him?

Don't get me wrong. If I were her, I'd be howling for revenge too. But that would state sanctioned revenge, not justice.

Bollockstoitall · 14/05/2011 18:52

Winkywonka.
"It will not bring peace or closure for the woman"

Did she personally tell you this statement?! Did she tell you this so you could relay this to others, on her behalf?!

I find these statements rather insulting upon the woman. Espcially as she has clearly stated that this is what she desires, and that she would be happy to perform the punishment herself.

a level of revenge does have its place in justice - Osama Bin Laden I rest my case!

senua · 14/05/2011 18:58

I am shocked that some of you think that she should get her revenge. Iran has stopped it because even they know it is wrong and the world would condemn them if it went ahead.

It is barbaric. You should be ashamed of yourselves.Angry

Am definitely not!

I think that the OBL case was bad too. I would much preferred to have seen him captured and put on trial. However, I understand that trying to peaceably arrest a potential suicide bomber is not simple (conveniently for the AmericansHmm).

senua · 14/05/2011 19:04

Of course the acid attacker should be ashamed. No-one is defending him.
But sinking to his level is shaming.

IngridBergman · 14/05/2011 19:08

I can't believe people are supporting this...what's your general stance on corporal punishment, then, Lenin? Or capital?

oxocube · 14/05/2011 19:18

Lenin, what I meant was that from what I know of women living in Iran (which is not much I admit), their lives seem very dominated by male opinions, rules and desires. It would seem that the only option for many women, both in terms of social acceptance and financially, is marriage, and that this is unlikely to be an option for her now. I agree that maybe I was being judgemental by saying she has 'nothing left' - I guess I was comparing what I know about her culture to a Western one.

I was reading recently again about the young British woman who was also the subject of an acid attack and how she is gradually beginning to rebuild her life and how part of her healing process seems to be talking and writing about her experiences and helping others who have been the victims of trauma or assault. I feel that the same opportunities would not have been given to the Iranian victim in this story. But of course I could be completely wrong and am open to correction.

However I still stand by my opinion that this proposed punishment is totally wrong for so many reasons.

I don't think I care what happens to him, maybe disfigurement (or whatever is proposed) and life imprisonment would do or maybe he should just be executed and save everyone any further bother.

erm...

Well it wasn't very clear.

PrincessFiorimonde · 14/05/2011 19:37

I remember my mother saying, decades ago, that if someone killed one of her children (I guess this was in response to something in the news then about a child having been killed) that she would want to find the person responsible and kill him/her herself. But that she would also 'expect' the state to stop her from doing that.

I remember that very clearly; don't know why, as my mother and I generally had diametrically opposed views on all sorts of things.

So I'm with Georgimama, WinkyWinkola, etc. here. Yes, of course if someone threw acid in my eyes I would want to do the same to him.

But my wish to be vengeful, however understandable, wouldn't necessarily be right in terms of societal justice. (And I know that this is easy to say, since it hasn't actually happened to me or to someone that I love.)

As to whether or not violent criminals receive what many of us might consider 'adequate' sentences - well, that's a different argument, isn't it?

Bollockstoitall · 14/05/2011 19:40

Bet you wouldnt tell Amenah that she should be thoroughly ashamed of herself, and that she "would be no better than him".

From the statements shes already given, I believe she wouldn't give a damn.

Lets not forget she wouldn't be in this position, if an inadequate little tosspot hadn't of doused her face with acid, for rejecting his advances.

I dont think her demands are barbaric one iota.
I hope she gets what she desires.

And I am not ashamed.

tethersend · 14/05/2011 19:45

She should be angry, she should want to throw acid in his face, if not rip him to shreds for what he did to her.

And it's the state's job to stop her doing it.

Didyouever · 14/05/2011 19:48

If he'd done this to my daughter I'd cut his knackers off.

Not very humanitarian but true.

ItsGrimUpNorth · 14/05/2011 19:51

So it's barbaric for him to throw acid at her but not for her to do the same act of blinding him with acid?

Where does it all end?

She can maybe never forgive him. I couldn't but this blinding isn't the answer either. It's primitive and cruel. And he is clearly a primitive and cruel man but society needs to show that it is not that way.

WorzselMaamage · 14/05/2011 19:55

He deserves every second of the pain he caused her. He DESERVES never to see his children, be self sufficient, or chop up his own dinner. He is a foul excuse for a man. People like that only understand one kind of law. They are scum.

I hope she blinds him AND chops his bollocks off.

Thank fuck I don't live in Iran.

PrincessFiorimonde · 14/05/2011 20:02

But Worzsel (and others), sadly a fuckwit of a man throwing acid at a woman does not happen only in Iran. It happens here too, albeit rarely.

PrincessFiorimonde · 14/05/2011 20:04

And of course I agree with tethersend, who put the point I was trying to make earlier more succinctly that I did.

tethersend · 14/05/2011 20:04

But Iran thinks that a starving eight year old boy DESERVES to have his arm crushed under the wheels of a car for stealing a loaf of bread.
