I think what happened to the woman is terrible and criminal. I have no words at all to sum up my thoughts about a state which allows the same thing to be inflicted as punishment.

Feeling vengful is one thing. Inflicting vengence is another. That is not the job of the state - or any citizen. Blood breeds blood.

I disagree.

oxocube · 14/05/2011 18:24

It might be rubbish Lenin but its my opinion.

Bollockstoitall · 14/05/2011 18:24

i know you think its wrong, georgie, as do some other posters. But the fact remains, that she lives in a society that has accomodated her wish to decide the punishment which she feel is right, to be given to her perpertrater.
And all the best to her.
I hope she gets closure on her awful ordeal.
And all this for the heinous crime of snubbing his marriage preposal.

Georgimama · 14/05/2011 18:26

I hope she gets closure too. I don't think anyone here is suggesting that what happened to her was anything other than abhorrent.

IngridBergman · 14/05/2011 18:29

Lenin is that you or has your account been hijacked? I'm appalled at your words and really disappointed as I thought of you as someone with a good measured stance on most things political.

'And if we just automatically forgave everyone who does anything wrong, there'd be no incentive for them not to do it, would there?'

Absolutely there would. I don't think you are understanding my point. It's about personal responsibility - and of course, protecting society from someone capable of these crimes, so imprisonment for the foreseeable, yes by all means. Punishment? Revenge? What's that about? That road gets you NOwhere.

That's how wars begin. and how they perpetuate. Insanity.
An incentive not to commit horrific crimes would be your own sense of self respect and the love and respect of other people.

A law which actively encourages revenge - well I can see how these countries are so bloody volatile. They have not learned, have they.

Bollockstoitall · 14/05/2011 18:29

I dont feel that anyone has suggested that?

IngridBergman · 14/05/2011 18:31

Sorry, all but the first paragraph was largely in response to OMF.

Lenin, it's not about whether a woman (or anyone) can feel vengeful. It's about how you process that.

Totally healthy to feel whatever the hell she feels about it, but acting on those feelings needs to be restrained somehow...that's how society works.

flagging · 14/05/2011 18:35

Shame it has been postponed. I rarely/never agree with Iranian 'justice' but they've got it right here. Why shouldn't he suffer the loss of his sight? I don't think it will poison her soul, I bet she'd feel a whole lot happier having read her comments.

He's ruined this poor poor woman's life - blind, disfigured, in pain - job/marriage prospects ruined. Why is anyone feeling sorry for him.

Georgimama · 14/05/2011 18:36

No one feels sorry for him.

I agree that sentencing in this country is too lenient.

But vengeance like this dripping acid into someone's eyes is evil. Twisted. And it will not bring peace or closure for the woman. It perpetuates harm and misery.

I'm not sure it is horrific. I wouldn't advocate throwing acid at him (though clearly he favours it). But losing his sight under anaesthetic - seems fair to me.

BTW the woman in question flew to Iran to see justice served. She says she is very disappointed and would have happily done it herself. So that's how she feels.
