BBC News Article

Given most governments in EU are having to make some serious austerity measures, I think someone is taking the piss!

We should veto this. Oh wait....we can't. Thanks to New Labour we gave that power up! That along with our hard won rebate. And what did we get in return? Oh yes.....a promise that they'd look into their EU spending with a view to reducing how much is paid in farm subsidies.

Doesn't look like that was a stunning deal was it?

"That along with our hard won rebate."

We haven't given up the rebate. Tony Blair did negotiate away 20% of the rebate for a fixed period under certain conditions but it still remains and the EU would seemingly love to do away with it. The main aspect of the deal was that the extra money we would pay wouldn't go on farm subsidies and was matched by extra donations from other countries. The first condition was met, it was hard not to as the subsidies budget had already been agreed. Off the top of my head I've no idea about the second condition. And yes there was then the promise for a review, again I've no idea if that has happened, but I would have high hopes for any significant changes even if it did.

Don't let any of this give the impression that I'm a supported of the mess that the EU keeps its finances in, but the EU does enough wrong that when it's incorrectly attacked for something we can set it straight.

David Cameron and the Euro-Conservatives with their scarily right wing Eastern European allies are what's next. My hopes for improvements in our handling of Europe aren't high...
