I just don't understand why anyone wouldn't want to wear something that symbolises their love and commitment to someone? In makes things appear a bit unequal to me.

Surely that's between him and his future wife. And my grandfather was up on a charge during the War for wearing a ring on board a ship then catching it in some equipment and ripping his finger apart, so it's probably best for servicemen not to wear them.

Lucyinthepie · 01/04/2011 17:44

I chose not to wear a wedding ring. Not a great idea in my job, so I had a nice chain to put my ring on, and it was worn on special occasions.
I think the wedding should be cancelled and held quietly in some royal premises with a registrar. The money saved on security and all the other crap that goes with it could be used to stop people in England having to pay for prescriptions when the rest of the UK doesn't. We're in a bloody recession and some people are struggling and even going under for goodness sake.

Ephiny · 01/04/2011 17:50

Ring injuries can be really horrific (google for pictures, or don't if you're about to have your tea!), that's one of the things that puts me off! Not likely to happen unless you're doing manual work or sports or something, I know, but one of the things I'm a bit paranoid about anyway.

Also just don't see the need for jewellery, have never worn it and not going to start now.

PortBlackSandwitch · 01/04/2011 17:52

I am NOT Googling "Ring" Injuries - esp on a Friday night Shock

Ephiny · 01/04/2011 17:54

:D

5inthebed · 01/04/2011 17:57

My DH doesn't wear a wedding ring, but that is because he swallowed it one drunken night Hmm

BadPoet · 01/04/2011 17:59

I don't wear a wedding ring. My husband does. I think people do think I'm it's slightly odd, but I don't care.

Unfortunately (for them and anyone who's not interested) whatever W & K do they will be scrutinised and mercilessly analysed.

AnonymousBird · 01/04/2011 18:04

The royals don't

They wear signet (sp?) rings.

PortBlackSandwitch · 01/04/2011 18:10

5inthebed - did you not send him a furkling the next day as punishment?

5inthebed · 01/04/2011 18:17

Yes, with a blunt spoon Grin

He swears it is still in his stomach, three years later.

AnnoyingOrange · 01/04/2011 18:19

appararently Price Charles wears a wedding ring next to his signet ring on his little finger.

AnnoyingOrange · 01/04/2011 18:22

British men never traditionally wore wedding rings. They are also a big common (in men). I imagine that is part of it. It comes down to women are property - gievn away as the property of their father who pays for the wedding to their husband who then takes them on and the ring on the finger means woman is owned by man but no ring on the man's hand because he doesn't haev to declare his married status just as men stay Mr but some women become Mrs. It's all about sexism really.

Highlander · 01/04/2011 20:10

I aggree with Xenia. Wedding rings were traditionally for women to demonstrate that they were the property of their husband.

Some men took on the tradition of showing that they are married.

I rarely wear mine, but DH's hasn't been off his finger since were were married.

Wamster · 01/04/2011 20:48

I think women are MORE attracted to men who wear wedding rings not less.

upahill · 01/04/2011 20:53

Really Wamster? Shock

Bumpsadaisie · 01/04/2011 21:36

It's not traditional for the man to wear a ring. My DH (another public school type) didn't want to.

In my old fashioned way I quite liked the fact that I was the one getting the special ring and didnt feel the need for DH to have one to feel equally loved by him.

UnquietDad · 01/04/2011 22:47

Have to say, Wamster, that's not my experience. Maybe I am just an ugly bugger who snared the one woman in the universe who is prepared to shag him, but as far as I know it's not the experience of any of my terribly handsome married mates either...

MissGreatBritain · 01/04/2011 22:52

To be fair, everyone IN THE WHOLE WORLD will know he's married, so he doesn't really need to wear one for that reason.

megapixels · 01/04/2011 23:07

"I think women are MORE attracted to men who wear wedding rings not less."

No women are not. Perhaps some women are. Not women in general.

TrillianAstra · 01/04/2011 23:18

"I think women are MORE attracted to men who wear wedding rings not less."

WTF? Hmm

Anyway, clearly an April Fool, not because I think he will wear a ring but because I doubt he would be talking about it.

scottishmummy · 01/04/2011 23:32

plenty adulterers wear wedding rings like prince charles for example. wedding ring is not indicative of moral character

meditrina · 01/04/2011 23:43

If it's an April Fool, why did it break on t'Internet on 31 March?

megapixels · 01/04/2011 23:54

I don't think it's an April Fool's joke, it's not a joke to begin with!

They are just keeping the media/public informed now so that there won't be any speculation later.
